Happy New New England Pounder CANned Beer NFL-less Sunday (Week 659), Part Deux!

Good news, I'm back! Hmm. I used to proclaim that, or "Good news, I'm here!" whenever I visited PHL's Nodding Head or saw its owner, Curt Decker, aht 'n' abaht. Inside his establishment, guns would be loaded & cocked while aht in tahn, he would simply run for cover. I have that effect on people. If you would like to see what effect I have on you, I will be at The Grey Lodge's Friday the Firkenteenth & Saturday's Das Best Oktoberfest, or you CAN/may always come to Lancaster, PA.

Man, I got a buncha Trillium B.C. CANs in my shipment! It/they may have inspired me to run back up to BOS at some point, or maybe to simply institute a trade, but either way, color me impressed! I was nonplussed at the lack of filtration/clarity, but overall ...

I left Maine for Mass, beginning with:

The duck & I agreed that I should pull my duck boat up to the Pier for a shore visit, so I did just that:

but now, the duck is advising me to take a break. I shall heed her sage advice & attempt to return before COT (close of thread).

Wow! We're really moving right along on this week's thread. The reason isn't truly a mystery ("pun" intended), and there has been numerous fun reads this week.

I am finally back home was supposed to be at my father's wedding turns out thing went south and it did not happen. I wanted to make sure I was back in time to try this blind beer and maybe one more. My first beer was sent by @LehighAce06 and although I cannot tell you who the beer is from the wonderful aroma and flavors tell me it is most likely a Saison and an excellent one at that. I am about half way though the Tastykake bomber and if they brew this kind of beer I am a fat kid on their cupcakes and beer. My son actually already ate all of the snacks that were included last night on our way to NC. Below is my review.

Appearance 4 – pours cloudy yellow straw color with nice fluffy white head that dissipates to a thick ring around the glass.

Aroma 4.25 – Tart citrus lemon/lime, light funk, oak, some light floral notes as well

Taste 4.75 – Taste is very similar to the aroma but times 10, great tart citrus, funk is more pronounced with a light oak and a slight white grape.

Feel 4.25 – Light bodied prickly carbonation just enough tartness to pucker your mouth.

Overall – An excellent Saison, great flavors wonder feel.

I waited to get most of it done before the reveal and why would it not be a Tired Hands beer. This is just an amazing Saison very well done, thanks @LehighAce06 for all of the excellent beers!!!

It has been a great weekend, from the Bierkeller Oktoberfest yesterday alone. The beer was great, setting was perfect, and I got to spend time with old friends and new. All has not been beer, however. The time has come to replace the blinds on a few of our windows. I spent the mornings yesterday and today going up and down ladders, installing the new blinds.
Chores are done, and it's time for a beer. For a change of pace from all the lagers this weekend I'm liberating a Wicked Weed Dark Age from the recesses of the fridge.

This is from a March 2016 bottling. The 12.7 oz size is a little unusual. I like it for a high gravity beer. I get two pours in a small tulip.
Out of the bottle there's a nice finger of beige head, which clings to the glass as a thick curtain. The bourbon aroma is front and center, with a slight alcohol tickle. There's also some stone fruit and cocoa in the nose.
Taste is strong bourbon and oak, with less fruit. Alcohol is noticeable, but not offensive. The flavors are simple and don't develop appreciably as the glass warms. Body seems a bit thin for the style.
I enjoyed it, but it's not one of the better BB stouts available here.
    Hope everyone's weekend was enjoyable.

The last rare beer from the Rare Beer box from Ommegang...
Ommegang was one of the first brewers I really latched onto when I got into craft (Unibroue was another), as I was enamored of Belgian ales early... Since that first year or two, I've not frequented either brewer much, as I've definitely become that hop-headed D/IPA-drinker that strays mostly only for big stouts and barleywines. It's been nice to come back and touch base with this NY brewer of Belgian-styled ales...
That said, interestingly enough, both this beer and the Barrel-Aged Three Philosophers (BA3P) I had this morning were brewed and bottled by Boulevard Brewing in Kansas City, MO. The Ginnepin that came in the box was brewed by Ommegang in Cooperstown, NY.
And I'm a little uncertain if the beers I've been drinking are just new versions of the beers already listed on the site, or new beers that should receive separate listings... Part of me thinks they should be new entries, but I did not treat them as such. For example, the BA3P listing on the site has a different label and abv (11.4 vs. the 9.7 on this release), plus it is brewed in Missouri... This Barrel-Aged Abbey Ale Dubbel also has a different label, and while the abv has not changed, the name reads differently on the image posted on the site (simply "Ommegang Abbey Ale" - with a paper tag around the neck identifying it as the barrel-aged version), and the name listing says, "Bourbon Barrel-Aged Ommegang Abbey Ale" - and again, this edition is brewed in KC... I dunno what to make of that. It's probably also worth noting that nowhere on this bottle does it specify bourbon barrels were used. It simply says barrel-aged. Based on the flavors I perceived, I am inclined to think it was simply aged in oak barrels. I didn't get anything suggestive of bourbon specifically.
What I did get were aromas of dark, sweet bread and muted fruits, like dates and figs... On the sip, a watery molasses-like sweetness was complimented by mild, sweet anise and licorice impressions... The overall character was fruity and herbal, and smooth, with the barest hints of oak and woodsy notes... Easy drinking, with a nice drying finish...

Here's to new beer in your glass, cheers...

I know it's none of my business, but it sounds like there might be a story there. Plus, with all the shit that happened during the course of this BIF, seems that it was almost a given.......

Dark Horse - Bourbon Barrel Aged Toonilla

Another one from @Blackop555 NBS#6 box(es). Thank you.

Something to be appreciated about a BBA stout thats not a 22 oz bottle at 12+% abv. This one clocks in at a reasonable 7.5. I was a bit weary of the vanilla, as a usually find it overwhelming, but not the case here at all. A solid coffee forward milk stout with slight bourbon and vanilla.

A: dark brown, nearly black with a thin mocha head that settled into a nice little island as oppose to the more common ring.

S: Fresh coffee grounds, bakers cocoa, bourbon, slight vanilla

T: taste is dominated by fresh coffee grounds, slight bourbon and vanilla, with a lingering bakers cocoa in the finish

M: medium body, rich and creamy, low carb

O: flavors are pretty straight forward, nothing overly complex. I do appreciate a nice Bourbon barrel stout thats not in the double digits abv.

You are correct sir, the bride to be decided she was not ready to get married and gave the ring back Saturday. Instead of getting married we moved his stuff from her house back to his. He was pretty ok with it in his words "better to find out now than next week".

You sir have an impressively calibrated palate! Alot of people are iffy on smoked beers, but this one is hard not to enjoy. I havnt had it in some time, probably time for a revisit! Cheers.
