As I mentioned in my first post, I am just starting out in this hobby and have my first batch fermenting now (hopefully). What I have learned already is that almost everyone is excited to talk to you when you mention you are home brewing! There is so much curiosity and interest.

While talking with a colleague at work today I happened to comment how much fun it would be to have a large brewery and give names to your creations. He fervently insisted he would absolutely name any beer he brewed at home no matter the volume. So instead of saying "I think I will make that honey wheat again" he would say something like "I think I will make more Beekeeper" or whatever name he put on that recipe. Or people he gave it to could say "I really enjoyed the Overtime you made last month." He joked he would even name the bad batches so he could use their names... "Wow. Sunburst was just awful!".

So... It got me curious about the world of home brewers out there. Do you give names to your home brews? Even if is only for your own purposes?

Bonus question would be... if you do, do you have a favorite name you used?

I occasionally name a beer, if something comes to me, but I don't make it a point to think of a name if it's not happening organically. However - and I imagine I am not alone in this - my wife does make it a point. She has even created a logo for our "brewery" and prints out "menus" with the logo and beer names, descriptions, and stats for people when we give them a six pack. Of course, her career is in marketing, so it makes sense. If that's the part of the process she enjoys best, then so be it, as long as she lets me keep spending money on the brewing side! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

In all seriousness, though, I do like to have names for the beers so I can keep them straight on Untappd.

I name every one of my beers and also create a label for the bottles that I give away. The label also always contains my fictitious brewery name and usually some sort of graphic.

My favorite name was probably "Junkyard Ale" because it used up a lot of my leftover ingredients from other brews. It turned out pretty good.

I name mine as well, and it usually relates to something specific about that beer. My first beer, an extract hefeweizen, went really well, save for me forgetting to thoroughly mix the wort with the top-off water, resulting in a way-off OG measurement. Needless to say I freaked out for a while, nearly derailing my brewing career from the start, before my girlfriend knocked some sense in me and I googled it and figured out my issue.

I named it Hefe Forgotten Anything?

I have only named beers I've entered into competition. I don't name every single one.
My favorite was an English Barleywine that I named "Down The Rabbit Hole".
I do have a brewery name also but that will remain off the interwebs until I trademark it. Not that I intend to start a commercial brewery but you never know and I like the name.

I do, but I'm afraid that I am not very creative. My latest is named Pale Ale.

My “keepers” get names. Anything I brew more than once or try to perfect. I teach college level environmental science, so all of mine are named after animals.

    Golden eagle IPA
    Friendly Black Bear stout
    Polar bear vanilla stout
    Malti-poo witbier
    Ginger fox (ginger golden ale)
Baby giraffe (blonde ale w banana)
A Dingo ate your baybee DIPA
    Capybara Carmel ale

And many others I can’t remember off the top of my head

I usually name mine after songs or lyrics that somehow fit in with the style, however tangentially. Favorite names have been:
    Lacerated Sky India Red Ale
    Electrified Hate Black IPA
    Liquid Swords Farmhouse IPA
    Softly Spoken Lies Rye Saison
These Two Boots of Mine Porter
    Barroom Hero Dark Mild

Everything gets a name! Some of my favorites (names not beers) have been:
    Cream and Shout (Cream Ale)
Rudolph the Red-nosed ReinBeer (Winter Warmer)
    Triple Crown Loser (Kentucky Common)
'Murica is Best (Best Bitter w/American hops)
    Steve Urquell (Pilsner Urquell clone)

Edit: Obviously going for cheesy/dorky humor.

I'm like 1076 - I name them when an appropriate name comes to me, which isn't always. My IPA I've given a name based off the hops used, plus it's the initials of a summer camp I went to as a kid, so I like using that. One of my favorites is based of the recipe for the New Albion beer brewed by Sam Adams a while back, so I call it Newer Albion (I'm not planning on going pro at all, so this is all for my own amusement)
I have an imperial stout based off a recipe from the Budweiser test kitchen that I call Evil Empire Stout, and so on. Many of my beers are just "named" or identified as the style, or what the recipe is based on, if it's a clone or similar.

I name my beers after song titles I like. I have a Mexican Lager on right now named Piss On The Wall. Some names I reuse for like beers (slightly different hops or malts on a rebrew).

I usually do name my beers. Some examples ...
    • Waimea Pale Ale -- straight description of the beer style and featured ingredients, boring, but gets the message across
    • Mottled Moo -- reflect the inspiration (Spotted Cow) and my attempt at being too clever,
    • Dark Omen -- refers to an event that happened at the time of brewing; a starling committed suicide by window on my porch while I was brewing a darker than usual Dubbel
    • PWeisBWeiss -- stupid word play. I made the Berliner Weiss, ergo...

Nice question. I don't generally bother, beyond something baldly descriptive like "mosaic red rye" or "challenger blonde" or "simple saison". I mostly brew stuff to drink at home with friends and family, and I suspect that even if I did come up with fancier names, no-one (including me) would bother using them...

I drink mine way too fast to ever get a name  If it's a special brew, or one that I'm entering into a comp then it definitely gets a clever name and maybe a label.

I name and label every sour, funky, or otherwise special beer that I brew. Everyday drinkers, like IPAs and saisons, don't get fancy names, labels, or cool bottles. They just get put in swingtops.

Of course. No labels or anything like that, I just shout the names out. Just did a NEIPA that I'm giving to a friend for his first tap system. He and another friend are from a town called Winchester. I added a touch of honey malt which is giving the beer a bit of copper color and "The Goonies" is one of my favorite movies so....."Chester Copperpot"

I definitely name all of my beers. I've only made a few batches, but my favorite name so far is Belichick Never Smiles NE IPA. Sometimes I do labels. I have a friend in graphic design that will make them for me occasionally, but for the most part I don't bother with labels because I keg. Although I have used the labels my friend made on tap handles.

Yep, each beer is named to follow my "theme" of my homebrewery (Grave Brewing). I have logos and all that for it and even a FB page that friends/family follow so they know whats on or whats coming. Keeps me entertained, ha!

Every beer guests named with word , letters and or numbers depending on what it is, who I make it for, movies I have recently seen and other assorted trash I can't think of.

Of course, some on the forem gave me shit about it, perhaps cause I did not explain what they were, but that has calmed down for the moment
