That's just a basic wine key. $2-5 at a grocery store. I have busted several of those on waxed bottles.

How do you bust a metal opener on a wax sealed bottle? The wax seal should not cause much stress on the opener. A plasticized seal might be a bit more tough, but still don't see it.

Not sure of the forces you're using or quality of the ones you're buying but this one is fairly sturdy, especially when all closed up and opening a bottle.

I have had some waxed bottles that had a little pull tag that made life so easy. I wish I could remember which brewery (s) do dat.

Its plastic, and, some of our brewers use a lot of wax. Usually, ya can't even get an edge under the cap. The hinge will snap, or the plastic body will crack.

The one I have is all metal. Dig it into the wax until under the edge of the cap. They pry right off. Like this:

I never seem to get bottles with that little wax  .

A lot of bottles I seem to get, you can't even see the shape of the cap, let alone get an opener under the cap.

What's the point of the wax anyway? I doubt it significantly improves the seal over cap-only. I'm thinking that the brewer who uses wax wants to make you feel justified in paying more for a bomber. I believe that's also why many bomber-only beers are high ABV - to make you feel you are getting more drunk-for-the-buck value.

Have to admit Whale Slayer is a cool name for this type of thing. Even looks like a mini harpoon.

I just melt the wax with my torch then take a fat dab of it.

That get you more messed up than the beer?

Wrap some wick around it and light the sucker. Cap will eventually pop off, or the neck will.

So this is a thread about a pretentious tool for pretentious packaging.

One of my friends has a whaleslayer. Considering how many whales he brings to shares, it sees plenty of use.

I could have used either of these this morning helping a buddy dig into a bottle of Mornin' Delight he brought back from a recent IA trip. We were discussing what would make that task easier as he struggled to get to the cap to open it. I was going to Google openers but seeing this answered that question.

Most any metal opener will do, just work the bottom lip through the wax and open as usual. Using anything sharp introduces unnecessary risk.
