Good evening NBS and thanks to @lordofthewiens for the kick off today, the book consumption reference has been great to follow today. Personally more voracious in my youth, then kids, now they as adults give me challenge books, so more voracious now. Weekend classes are now complete, packaged a home brewed Scottish Ale now time for a beer before Charlie Brown Halloween.
Today's offering is a coffee baltic porter from Brasil. I am still navigating the add brewery bit on this site but these are my impresssions
A - Opaque mahogany color, nicely carbonated, a thin cap of off white.
S - Excellent coffee notes, light roast, a touch of green in the bean, toasty malts and toffee
T - A bit sweet, coffee is pronounced, not dominant, malt base is matched well, slightly bitter element is delightful.
M - Light in body, clean from the lager approach, superb finish, clean and refined
O - What a nice experience, clean baltic porter, the deftly applied coffee adds just enough heft.
    Cheers all

Greetings All on the last GLORIOUS weekend of October. Last tour of the lawn with the mower for the season. Picking up some leaves. Clear blue sky and temps in the low 60's.

We end the day's activities with Project 9 Pils from Fernie BC.

A nice lawnmower beer for sure.

Snow showers in the 10 day forecast. Yikes!

    Until next time.

    Happy Trails!

Woody Allen's "Side Effects"?:rofl::rofl::joy::joy::joy::rofl::rofl::rofl: Those comedy books of his are the funniest stuff.

Derailleur is definitely sweet, and my bet is the little bit of age on it made it sweeter. It's probably a bit like Brooklyn Chocolate Stout -- ready to go off the bat. In fact, I've got a couple three in my fridge and need to get to them. But it's cool seeing you picked up on some of the "Scotch" and porter aspects.

Man, where are my Woody Allen books? *wanders off muttering to himself*

#2, this is magnificent, IMHO. It made the journey from Minnesota to Texas and held up exceptionally well. I wish I’d purchased a couple more bombers to age.

Murky, chestnut brown color, tan head with gravitas. The wine and oak barrel aromas are very prominent on the nose initially, but the dark fruit aromas are also present.

The taste is a jubilee of flavors - there’s rich caramel, there’s raisins, there’s dark fruits (figs and dates are listed on the label, which seems accurate), there’s spices that resemble cinnamon and cardamom, but not Inman obtrusive way. And the barrels are also represented with a spritzy flavor from the wine and some vanilla from the oak. Simply delicious.

This is the winter warmer I’d like to drink every year for the rest of my life. I hope Deschutes releases this again. Soon.

My second new beer reflects how late to the party I can get...

Missed out on it, so actually paid attention this year...

Well, it pours like you see it. Beautiful in the glass. To me, the smell is excellent and understated...chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, vanilla sweetness, a little pepper, and I think nutmeg. All present, but not an assault on the nose.

The taste opens up as the beer warms. To me, it was a bit muddled when coldbut the flavors become more distinct as the temperature goes up. This does indeed mimic a spiced hot chocolate. Not overly sweet, adequately bitter, chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg, and a kiss of hot pepper that builds but not remotely close to the point of tongue-scorching. Bitter chocolate aftertaste. Smooth, not too carbonated, maybe a nitpickingly bit thin.

Good stuff that will land slightly above the 4.0 level. A beer this good for a very reasonable price...hard to beat.

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

It always feels good to get done with work for the day, even more so on Sunday.

Today I've been thinking about this beer all day at work, and now to dig in.
    Eleven Ale from Surly Brewing.

Very interesting beer. Probably the biggest downside is just the size of the bottle. I will be taking my time with this one, and I don't think I'll be doing any more beer after this tonight.

    Review.

    3.77/5 rDev -3.1%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Pours a nice shade of brown. The head is off white, 2 finger, and somewhat frothy. Retention was average. No real lacing on the glass.
The nose is somewhat earthy. I get a grape aroma.
Taste - Quite complex. Up front I get the earthy taste, raisin. On the backside I do get a burn from the 10% ABV that does linger.
Fairly full bodied. Some burn from the alcohol, but not as strong as expected. Some carbonation bubbles.
    Interesting beer. Unique. Complex.

Here it is, NBS, my last new beer of the day...
All Infinity Everything, a collab between local brewers Sand City and Other Half...

This is one of those fruit smoothie beers... Medium gold, juice-like opacity, tall head of foam, webby lacing left behind... Aromas predominantly citric, followed by a juicy, citrusy, plush-bodied beer... Amarillo, Motueka, Citra, Mosaic, and Galaxy hops with both wheat and oat malts provide a super beer drinking experience... Smooth and soft, full of bright fruit notes, mildly bitter, moderately sweet, and lushly carbonated... A real winner at 8.7% abv, but my score still falls below the rDev... Am I a dick today? Is my palate just super-refined? Dunno, but it is what it is... This beer was awesome, man... Recommended...

Here's to new beer in your glass, cheers...

Looks like @larryi86 wont be the only one a bit disappointed in 450 today. This one looks and smells the part, but I just can't get past a clove like spiciness in the finish. I'm the first to review, so maybe its just me, time will tell.

    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

I guess ill take the first stab at this one.
No can date, but release was less than 2 weeks ago.

A: hazy dark yellow, with a large frothy white head with extreme retention.

S: citrus, lemon, and grapefruit. Definetly mossic hops dominating this one.

T: juicy citrus on the front, with a clove like spice clashing on the finish

M: medium body, high carb. not quite the soft pillowy NE style feel as advertised.

O: alls good until that spice kicks in and overwhelms the juicyness. Looking forward to more reviews to see if I'm the only one getting that.

    Jack’s Abbey BA Framinghammer Porter

Excellent beer. Subtle mouthfeel and nice flavor combination.

    Poured from 500 ml bottle

A: Pitch black with one finger light tan head lasting for a short time and leaving some light lacing.

S: Bourbon, cocoa powder, molasses, and rich roasted malts

T: Rich dark chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, and molasses.

M: Medium to full body with average carbonation. Finish is slightly sweet and dry.

O: Superior BA porter. Another great beer from Jack’s Abbey.

One more for today, my buddy brought home a couple of cases of bombers from his trip and this is the last of several he gave me. Wasn't expecting much when I saw the bottling date was over 4 months ago, beggars can't be choosers though...

Pours a hazy dark orange with minimal head.
    Smells lots of citrusy pith.
Taste follows, mainly grapefuit, some tangerine.
    Medium feel, good carb level.
Overall very tasty, especially considering this is a 4+ month old bottle.

As far as reading goes, I don't read nearly as much as I used to (50+books a year) but that was a tim ed in my life that I had time to read. Recently I've been reading the Rush Revere series to my sons at bedtime, good way to interest the young ones in some history.

Good evening, NBS. As I mentioned earlier, I love reading. I read almost exclusively fiction, but I'll throw in some history now and again. Some of my favorite authors include Stephen King, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (especially Pendergast books), F Paul Wilson (especially Repairman Jack), and Lee Child (Jack Reacher). Currently I'm in the third book of a sci-fi series called The Expanse by James S. A. Corey. Corey is the pen name for two authors - Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. Of note, Abraham has worked extensively with George R R Martin. Next up I'm going to look for some good fantasy series, since I haven't read fantasy in a while. I'm open to suggestions.

Anyway, I've been delinquent on my NBS "duties" lately. I chalk it to to laziness. But I'm back tonight with a new beer from my trip to Michigan.

    Ellison
    Crescent Fresh IPA

The beer pours bright and clear orangish-amber color with a tall, thick head and sticky lacing.

The smell is lemony/citrus hops with strong pine and floral notes.

The taste is a nice blend of pine with a little citrus. There is a nice floral taste on the finish along with a lingering bitterness.

The mouthfeel is medium/high carbonation and slightly thick.

Overall this is a decent beer, very smooth and easy to drink. The bitterness and pine are bit much for my personal taste, but it's very well done.

    From a 16oz can

It is a dark, almost blood red color. Semi transparent as a little bit of light comes through to highlight the ruby tint. There is a substantial tan colored frothy head that has really good retention.

It smells pretty malty. Toasted dark bread and caramel with an almost toffee like note and a touch of citrus and some floral hops.

It tastes like it smells. Much more malt forward than hop forward. Very bready with toasted crust, some rich toffee and caramel, a little kick of grapefruit and a musty/earthy citra hop like flavor. There is a bit of a spicey bite before it finishes with a smooth doughy aftertaste.

It is medium to light bodied and easy drinking.

I know Amber/Red Ales can be a catch all style and there are a lot of variations and different expectations, but this one is very balanced, leaning malty. A solid and enjoyable beer.

To answer your previous question: I'm still having trouble viewing any of your pictures.

Your posts in general are fine, though. I'm still getting a good idea of what you're experiencing with each beer, with or without photos.

    Cheers!

If you look for it every year around this time, is it a new beer for you? I'm confused.

No offense, brother, but if it's a near drain pour drowning in diacetyl, why are you rating it near 3.5? If it's literally below average, I would think it wouldn't crack 3.0. Unless you think it's a rare occasion, or the beer has a ton of promise.

Not trying to be contentious; just genuinely curious.

I'm with you all the way. Very good beer, but highly overrated, and nowhere near my top rated beers in CT.

In reference to @lordofthewiens opening, I read a lot, but it's mostly professionally/academically. In the last 10 years, I haven't read more than a half dozen fiction books, all of those being classics or otherwise significant works of literature (Vonnegut's Player Piano comes to mind).

I generally focus on non-fiction works regarding philosophy, politics, history, biology, religion, and astrophysics. It's dry, but the dichotomy between the social and the physical sciences provide their own natural counterbalance and keep one another from becoming too dry.

I read a ton of fiction as a child and as a young adult; I've consumed more science fiction and fantasy novels than anyone should, and it played a huge part in the development of my vocabulary and imagination. I just don't have the time for fiction anymore; I feel that if I'm reading, it should be something enhancing my understanding of the world, and all the wonders therein.

But hey .... beer, right?!? And I've got one more new beer for the day before I clock out. The daughter fell asleep in my lap (her usual routine), the house is quiet, and I figure: why not one more stout?

Evil Twin Even More Coco Jesus imperial stout with coconut and maple syrup

I have a feeling this is a beer that will grow on me with subsequent visits - maybe slightly more sober visits. I'm enjoying it, but I can't escape the feeling that it's just not living up to my expectations.

It's woody up front, with a burnt coffee facet to the roasted barley, and some of the toasted coconut coming through. Around mid-palate, it smooths out, with chocolate tones and more even coconut. Maple really shows on the finish, with a blend of sweet syrup, brown sugar, and dull wood.

Really quite enjoyable overall, but again, I'm slightly disappointed. I don't normally tweak my reviews upon subsequent visits, but if I retry this beer in the next couple of days, I will maintain an open mind.

Hardly. I would say about 1/3 of the folks I talked to at the release expressed some degree of dislike for it. The funniest thing was the wife of one person agreeing she didn't like Equinox and was so glad that it was Ekuanot in the beer we were waiting for. She even argued with me briefly when I told her that they were the same hop with different name, and then she looked it up

I'm back with a late entry because I'm swimming in new beer and the World Series game tonight is compelling enough to keep me from hitting the sack. Here we go......

A pint can of 6 Piece Nugget from 450 North Brewing CO. of Columbus IN. with a four pack date sticker of 10/18/17. The abv. is 6.8% and I'm pouring it in a 12oz. tulip glass to see what awaits?

It pours a slightly cloudy dark yellow producing a thick finger of creamy white foam. It takes forever to settle eventually revealing heavy lacing. The smell is green grapes, lemon zest, floral/spice, passionfruit, rubber and grapefruit. Taste is floral esters, green grapes, melon and grapefruit. A spicy pepper-like taste in the finish along with some mint. The feel is soft and pillowy with a slightly bitter and dry finish.

A drinkable beer, but it misses the mark for the style in my opinion. The usual tropical and juicy hop profile takes a back seat to slightly strange spicy floral notes. While good, it's not their best effort and not worth a future purchase. My score is 3.78.

I'm out for today and need to catch up on reading the thread. Have yourselves a great week! Heres the official scorecard......
