Ok so I was just going to do my dry hop and my fermonster lid would not come off. I had to put a belt around the neck to hold it in place because the sides are so weak so I could get the lid off. Well once the lid broke free i knocked over my container of dry hops on the carpet and just to put the icing on the cake I also knocked over the mason jar full of sanitizer on top of them. I picked 90% of them up off the floor and put in the container and filled it with sanitizer. Are the hops safe to use or scrap them? This is during active fermentation too. I'm scared I'll get an infection so any help asap would be appreciated :slight_frown:

So, the hops are in a container of sanitizer? What sanitizer are you using?

I would guess that the sanitizer would eliminate unwanted microorganisms (e.g., bacteria) but I would think the sanitizer would affect the hops.

Maybe somebody who has sanitized hops prior to dry hoping can provide a better response here.

    Cheers!

Yes soon as I picked them up off the ground I put diluted star San solution on them. 6 oz of hops and 3oz of star San. The hops just absorbed it all lol. Well I said screw it and put the hops in any way, after all it's just home brewing haha

Well, the motto is "don't fear the foam", right?

Please let us know how this 'process' worked out for you.

    Cheers!

For sure! I guess the only way to know if it was safe to do, was to actually try it haha

    I wouldn't recommend this. But.
    I haven't done it either.

Ya I'd probably not use them. Why risk a whole batch over a bit of money to replace them?

because the hops I used for recipe aren't sold local and I don't have any more atm. After I gathered my self from the incident (I was so mad at myself) I decided to say screw it, its only 5.5 gallons of beer if it ruins it I'll dump it and brew more. If it doesn't ruin it I'll drink it and brew more  I will be sure to post back with the results lol

I would have used the second addition hops as my first addition.

If there is anything the 5 second rule applies to...it is hops
I have dryhopped with spider webs, bugs, etc. on homegrown hops (with no sanitizer) and all beers have come out just fine. Hops are/were naturally anti-microbal...surely to the delight of medieval brewers.

Barry, can you please provide more details here? Specifically the aspect of dry hopping with bugs. Did you actually see live bugs that you added while dry hopping?

    Cheers!

No...live ones would get removed if seen, but plenty of dead spider mites and an occasional pincher bug carcass...and no I didn't sanitize my hands before reaching into the vacuum seal bag or hop bag.

thanks for sharing that. Never would have thought that. I'm such a freak about sanitation and sometimes we all just need to relax.

I think I moved so fast I had them picked up in about 5 seconds so I fall in the 5 second
rule category lmao I guess I freaked out and posted before I actually sat back and thought about it and soon after I posted, the anti-microbal thought popped in my head.

**UPDATE** So the beer is now fully carbed and amazing! This is 100% the best beer I have made yet. I see no ill effects as of yet, zero off flavors, and no starsan detected. I think I might name this beer DDH Starsan lol
