Starting my first thread as a member of this forum!

I live in Pittsburgh, PA and really want to try Troegs Mad Elf, but it sounds as though it's going to be tough to get in anything but a case. I don't drink too often, so buying a case is a fairly large investment to me and I'm curious what peoples thoughts are on this particular brew. Some people say it's the best thing in the world, others say it's vastly overrated.

Knowledge, opinion, advice, etc. appreciated. Cheers!

It is the crack cocaine version of beer

You shouldn't have any problems picking this up at any of the Giant Eagle locations that sell beer (either in six packs or 22oz bottles).

Yeah, you certainly don't need to buy a case. Six-packs and bombers are plentiful.

I would never buy a case of a beer I wasn't sure I liked. Before you buy a case, see if you can find another local BA member that will get you a bottle to try. Mad Elf has a ton of reviews here, most positive but there are a lot of people that don't like it.

It's interesting and worth a try (I found it kind of disjointed and too hot for a repeat purchase), so I definitely wouldn't recommend a case. Get a smaller amount if you can.

I like it fresh. I like it with a year on it. I like it in between, so a case can be spread out over a year.

If you use the information on the site you should be able to find a place to get a single bottle or try it on tap, e.g.

Try it before buying a case.

Find a friend who likes it, split a case.

And there's always the 3L bottles. My local shop has 3L vintages from 2008.

Even though you are in Pittsburgh, there are plenty of places that you can buy it by the 6pk or even by the bottle. Do that before investing in an entire case

I called around to both of the local Giant Eagles that sell beer and the local Whole Foods and none of them could tell me when or even IF they were getting any. The only place I found who would tell me they would definitely have it was a distributor, thus my comment about the case.

Good to know, though. I really don't drink enough to justify buying a case of anything. I definitely want to try it though. Appreciate all of the responses so far!

Go to a bottle shop and give one a try. Then proceed to buy a case. Drink a couple around the holidays and save yourself at least a six-pack to tuck away for next year or the following. I borderline dislike mad elf when it is fresh but that beer turns into something magical with age. Every year when its released I buy at least a sixpack and/or bombers and tuck them away in the cellar. Then I remove bottles i purchased the previous years to drink.

I have some every year . Is it the best holiday brew out there ? Not by a long shot. Is it worth trying hell ya, investing in case tho would be quite expensive. Wont one of the Sharp Edge locations carry it on draft ?

I've never had it but I bought a 3L bottle after Christmas in 2010 since it was on clearance for half price. I am glad I am still sitting on it since most say it is better with age. I am thinking of opening it this year at our Christmas party, you think two years is good to mellow the booziness?

I thought of that, actually. I work like 3 blocks from the downtown Pittsburgh Sharp Edge so I was thinking of dropping in there for dinner soon to see if they had it or would have it in the coming weeks.

I never have trouble spotting it in the Boston area.

It's OK... I don't understand the love affair with it. Hey, more for you guys.

If you've never had it, don't buy a case. Just try a single or a sixer first.

It's very sweet so, if you don't like sweet stuff, I wouldn't recommend it. I have a sweet tooth, so I love it whether it's fresh or aged. Haven't had it in a couple years since Troeg's is nearly nonexistent in South Florida :slight_frown:

Everyone around Harrisburg loves it (but that's largely because OMG HIGH ALCOHOL). Personally, I think it needs a year to calm down....way too sweet fresh.
