"Frontrunner in getting the craft beer scene off the ground"? I think that is overstating things a bit.
The craft beer scene was, after all, already up and running for quite a few years when they started operation.
Their survival and growth is worth noting though, and they do make a few decent products.

I love Stone as well. My earliest growler from 2002ish was half IPA and half Porter from the Mata Way now Lost Abbey location. I had 2 of those Mata way growlers, I lost one of them in a storage frenzy at the Oceanside local. I can still turn friends and family on to craft beer between Stone and Mother Earth all only miles away.

I'm a big fan. I know perfectly well that there are better beers out there to be sought out, key words being 'sought out'. I am not saying I am unwilling to seek out rarer stuff I like, but at this point in my life those kind of beers probably make up about 20% of my consumption. For the other 80%, there is an awful lot of Stone products I seem to always come home with. I don't try many of whatever the exclusive new brewery-only hotness is at any given moment, but I can walk into a gas station and get a Ruination 2.0, (which is not a good DIPA, but a phenomenal one) for about $6 a bomber. That's why I love Stone.

Reading through the entire thread and agreeing with most posts, I always find these threads interesting. It's usually someone NOT from the area questioning the beer and why it is the way it is. I would guess it is someone probably 20+ years younger than I. It's kinda like the threads that ask why EVERYONE doesn't love DFH. Not my cup of tea. Doesn't seem to be a thing on the west coast. Don't see it much. Like has been said, Stone is Stone...OG. Sierra Nevada and Anchor were OG before that for you youngsters. I am 48, so I feel I can say that. Do I love, love, love anchor. NO! Do I order an anchor steam whenever it's on draft....yes. Do I love, love, love Sierra. No! Do I order a Sierra Nevada beer whenever it's on draft....yes. Have you seen a Sierra Nevada brewpub? WOW! Do I order a Sam Adams boston lager whenever it's on draft (at an airport)....yes. You kinda see where I'm going.

They are always solid beers. You know what to expect when you get it because these OG breweries ALWAYS do it right. SO, in conclusion I would say Stone pushed the beer world above where it had been, and made all the others follow them.

Double Bastard and Old Guardian are 2 of my favorite accessible beers. They also age very well. As with most breweries, I don't like ALL stone beers, but I love that they emphasize variety and new angles on things. Beyond the regular releases, WootStout, Fyodor's Classic, and Southern Charred are excellent BA beers. I will always be a Stone fan.

You are spot on with most of your post. My intention was not to criticize Stone, but rather to get an understanding of beer culture's appreciation for the brewery. I was a little hesitant before posting as I worried many would see my post as hating on Stone. In the end, that was not the response I received - and most gave thoughtful responses. In the end, everyone is entitled to their opinions and everyone's palate is different. I have always appreciated Stone and Sierra for decades of doing what they do, and Anchor for doing it for over a century now. They have laid the groundwork many have since followed and beer culture most likely would not be where it is today had it not been for them. And, side note, for being an east coaster, I am with you on not loving DFH. For me, the reason I can appreciate them is similar to what most have said about Stone. Both came out around the same time in the mid-90's and they do what they do.

To everyone else, thanks everyone for chiming in. All of your comments have helped me gain a newfound appreciation for Stone. Most have been insightful and have helped me better understand the dynamic. The new Enjoy By Unfiltered sounds pretty solid so I'll have to be on the lookout. Cheers!

Underrated beer release yesterday no one is talking about: Fyodor and Mikhail. I believe this is the first time they've released the latter since 2013. It's pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Hmm, that's not what this implies:

Plus no Untappd check-ins until yesterday, etc. But whatever, point is, this is worth some love.

I'm waiting for some local shops to get them because I'm cheap and don't want to pay for shipping.

Stone is just a basic brewery now. Even though the san marcos location is beautiful. The beers are average. For the most part their BA stuff is crap. They can not barrel age stuff if their life depended on it.

    Basic...

Let me know when Tree House can maintain that level of quality and consistency when they’re making a tenth of what Stone produces.

I agree with you for the most part but do you think Fyodors sucks too? Thats the one BA beer that I think they do a really good job on, still way overpriced tho.

Wasn't Fyodor the same as the original Stone Quingenti BA RIS that was discovered in 2012 to be infected days after release?

At least the follow-up - Fyodor - turned out decent.

Stone BA stuff was actually pretty good, I think they are stingy with the barrel times though. That cut from 7 to 3 months of barrel aging on Xocoveza between the batches made all the difference in the world.

Hopefully they didn't cut corners with these

Saw Stone IPA cold stored at my grocery store today with a bottled date of 9/28. Picked one up after reading this thread and wanting a re-visit.
