I always have the problem of pulling big beers from the fridge and never knowing quite when they're at my preferred drinking temperature. Often I let them begin to warm up too long before I crack them and end up having to re-refridgerate. But I think I've solved that problem...

I didn't actually buy this for beer drinking (troubleshooting radiant floor heat inconsistencies) but it did get me extremely giddy when I realized I could finally ascertain a beers temperature accurately before opening it.

For anyone else with "radiant floor heat problems" home depot has infrared cameras on sale right now too. Cheers

Is that infra-red technology? If so, the scoop on that type of device is that it reads surface temp only. You may be getting a reading on the outside of the bottle, bot the beer itself. But it gives you a hint that the beer is close to being ready to drink at the temp that you want, so why not pop that cap (or cork) now?

Lol that is awesome. Will have to tell my wife we have radiant floor heat problems so I can get this nifty beer gadget. None the wiser

Nice! Not knocking your method when I say this but I tend to probably start my beers a little on the cold side and watch them evolve as they warm. It would be interesting tho to see what the optimal preferred temp is for a particular beer I am drinking. So with that said I say you do a science project! Start chilled and gradually let the beer warm whilst taking a reading and document at what temp said beer is most flavorful and aromatic? Between finding the perfect backdrop and lighting for beer photos I probably wouldn’t have the time for such a temperature study:rofl:

Yup, these are great to play with. I've got a Fluke next to the recliner and once in a while think to check the temperature of a stout as it reaches peak flavor. Also fun for playing with the cat, etc. The more beer you have the more uses come to mind.

No intention to offend but really guys, are you serious -temping the beer ? Just drink the damn stuff. Soon someone will want to device a gadget to tell when it was bottled. Give me a break.

Yes - great idea! Maybe they could just print it on the bottle in a standard location and format!

I have this problem, too. OP. Most of my beers are ice cold when I first get them out of the fridge, way too cold for my preference. But if I let them sit out too long they're not cold enough. It's a first world struggle. Haha.

Today I fell asleep in the recliner after drinking 3/4 of a crowler of stout. I must have slept for a couple of hours, and when I woke up, I started finishing the beer, and my wife asked how my warm beer was. I said "great, better warm". Sometimes I wonder why I bother refrigerating stouts.

You could just touch the bottle.

I have a certified beer temperature measuring laboratory if you want me to test it out for you!

Those devices are often inaccurate as much as a degree or two, so it is wise when buying one to also get a temperature calibrator you can use to assure accuracy just before taking the temp. of your beer

Breweries tend to serve their stouts and bigger beers too cold for my liking. But I would never take this with me to a brewery. I tend to have a half hour- hour rule to let beers warm up in my hands. At home, I'm lucky in that I can try some beers at straight room temp and then work in reverse. If it already tastes great warm, I may barely refrigerate the next ones or if I do, I let them sit out a good hour.

Another idea would be to crack the beer open and use a probe thermometer for a real time liquid reading. I have yet to get that involved. Half hour to hour rule is what I will stick with, to as not go crazy.

I have one of these for some of the environmental work I do. (I have an expensive one, but it is unnecessary for this because the differences in price and quality has to do with how far away you are and how precise it is at distances. When you are 6-12 inches away, there's very little difference in preciseness.)

I won't go through this effort yet, but I will say that I am much more fenatical about my coffee and water temperatures (as water temp greatly impacts the brewing process for coffee). I have not yet gotten this out for that yet either, but maybe soon.

Also, I have begun noticing that certain beers have a very optimal "temp range" for me that I am completely guessing on. Backwoods Bastard tastes extremely different at different temperatures. I actually dislike it at fridge temp. I think it is exceptional at what I am guessing is 50-60 degrees. (Cold enough to certainly know it is cold, but no where near cold enough that in a 65-67 degree house I am noticing condensation).

In my post above this I just mentioned that they are not that different for price. What you said is correct. I was just including this as being "not that innacurate" since we are measuring beer temp and not organisms temperatures during hibernation, say. So, valid point, but unimportant unless you are a serious beer nerd I think.

Yeah, sure wouldn't get one just for beer. I needed one for a home project, so hunted down a good deal on a professional Fluke model that is highly accurate and stable. Lots of uses such as looking for heating/cooling loss, automotive, etc.

BA beers in general are better slightly warm (luke cold?). When I first got into craft, I tried a Dragon's Milk, and after drinking it cold from the bottle, I swore off BA beers due to the overpowering bourbon taste. I was advised on these forums to drink all beers from a glass - but most notably BA beers - and to let them warm a bit. Huge difference, now BA beers are my favorite. I rarely think to measure the temperature, I just let them sit in the glass 10 minutes or so before I start to drink.
