Hey folks, Ryan from Odd13 here. I'm excited to announce that starting in early 2018, we will begin releasing a new year-round DIPA called Intergalactic Juice Hunter into distribution. We are planning to release several pilot batches, just like we did when we initially introduced Codename: Superfan.

The 1.0 pilot version will be released only through the taproom on Black Friday (11/24), along with 3 other new beers. The 2.0 version will also be released in the taproom this year, then future pilot versions will build on one of the two recipes and will be released into distribution.

What I'd love from the Mountain BA community is feedback on the pilot versions. I loved going through this process back when we first released Codename, and I'm looking forward to the conversation with the community this time. We are making exactly one change between 1.0 and 2.0, and we plan to release them close enough to each other (3 weeks apart) that a side by side comparison will be somewhat meaningful.

A bit about the beer itself: Intergalactic Juice Hunter is designed to showcase the stuff we've learned from making the various DIPAs we've released through the taproom over the past few years. We finally have a decently large contract for our favorite hop, Galaxy, and that's a big focus in this beer. We will probably spend some time fine tuning the blend of the other hops in the beer. Juice Hunter contains Lactose.

    Cheers!

Cans. 150ish cases available. All 4 new beers will be in cans - more info on that is in the event I linked to in my first post.

I'm excited. My big point to push is: please don't release it until it's ready to drink. I know you've stated people love it green, but I've never met such a person.

This will be fun! I really enjoyed trying the superfan iterations. The original label on that was pretty cool too...

General feedback before drinking: don’t put lactose in a year round IPA. It limits who can drink your beer. I have a number of friends who love odd 13, some who almost exclusively drink it due to being gluten reduced, who are lactose intolerant. Personally I haven’t seen a benefit from using lactose in ipas, but maybe that’s just me. Regardless, I’m excited to give it a whirl, and for a year round odd 13 dipa. Loving the 7th son and Papa right now.

This. Also, cuts out any vegan clientele from one of your year-round beers.

Please make it taste exactly like Alpha Twins.

We will be releasing Alpha Twins into distribution in 2018, but not as a year round. Our hop contracts wouldn’t support that. I will say that there is a lot of Alpha Twins influence in Juice Hunter.

Lactose is a key part of what we are trying to accomplish with this beer. As I noted above, it borrows a lot from Alpha Twins, which uses lactose. I understand there are people who won’t be able to drink it because of the lactose, and that’s something we are willing to deal with. This is intended to be about 10% of our year-round production, and we have no intention of introducing lactose into any of our other year-round beers. That said, since we are planning on Brewing several iterations before settling on a final recipe, we may consider brewing a test batch without lactose to compare.

Tyler, I’m curious whether you’ve had this year’s release of Papa Silenus or Seventh Son of a Thirteenth Son? We’ve adjusted a few things in our DIPA process to reduce/eliminate the burning that sometimes comes along with heavier hop loads. You seem to be more sensitive to it than some, so you’re a good barometer for whether said changes are working.

I'll throw my voice in here as someone who seems to be more sensitive to hop burn. In the past with your beers, I was burned in particular by DDH Galaxy Hop Wizard. I was usually fine when drinking your DIPA releases and totally loved Robot Librarian, Holidayfan, and previous years Papa..... but I recently picked up Seventh Son and was hit by a really rough hop burn. That's why I posted in the other thread asking about yeast changes to try to get to the bottom of why some of your beers affect me and why some don't. I can't figure it out still. (Haven't tried the new Papa yet)

But I'm an outlier. People were raving about that DDH Rare Trait from Cerebral recently but to me it was like drinking fire water (or more appropriately, fire juice). I've only really had this problem with heavily DHed NEIPAs from O13 and Cerebral.

You're not alone. Anything dryhopped at a rate of 1.5 oz per gallon of beer nets hop burn for me. I brewed a batch of DDH juicy bits at home that really came close to the real deal, it had to condition in the bottle over six weeks before the hop burn was gone.
