Thanks to @cjgiant for the lead off today. Interesting question about converting family members to craft beer lovers. I have influenced both of my older brothers - they were typically drinking Heineken and Corona, and they have gotten into a bunch of great beers over the last couple of years. I think the turning point was when I brought up a couple of bourbon county (to Canada, my homeland) a couple of years ago. They were blown away. Now the big stouts are desired.

Trying something new today. In fact, this was given to me by a bottle shop owner in Germany after he found out that I hadn't tried it. Incredibly nice. In fact, I have been surprised that most German bottle shop owners will get the total cost of the purchase and then take a couple of Euro off the total or throw in an additional beer or nice glass. This would be a great mentality to spread to the US!

This is Tap X Nelson Sauvin by Schneider Weisse. It's a Weizenbock with a nice dose of hops. Poured from fridge temp. Pours a nice deep orange with a huge amount of light head. Aroma is heavy on the citrus. Lemon and orange notes explode from the glass. Picking up some pine, vanilla, and some caramel candy. Taste follows the nose. A bit sweet initially, but with some really nice fruit and slight bitterness immediately after. Overall, I would call this more sweet than bitter. I get a decent amount of orange creamsicle. Mouthfeel is a bit dry and creamy. Really smooth and nice. Definitely recommended. Cheers all.

T-Nice balance of tropical fruits with the brett.
M-A nice balance of tropical hints with a strong brett finish.
O-A decent beer which hits all the right notes.

Ha! Yeah, I find it an interesting challenge to balance my geekery with other people’s interest at times. If I find someone seems to have more than a cursory curiosity, I usually start with offering them bottles of the beers I'm buying for myself, anyhow, and ask for feedback.

That’s basically what I do with my dad, though I might force a few on him. I think I have a good idea what he likes now, but he’s also adventurous, so I can experiment a little, too

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! I'm going to my brother's place in SF for xmas, and he is someone that I dragged into craft beer appreciation. He has recently taken an interest in ipas, so I am going to bring him Tired Hands for xmas, and he's getting me some Cellarmaker and Fieldwork freshies. Pretty excited to go back there in a few weeks to see how the scene has progressed since last year.

Speaking of ipas, starting today with this one, courtesy @vabeerguy .

L - 1-finger bright white head fades to nothing in about 2 minutes. Body is medium-orange. It's a great looking brew.

    S - grapefruit, orange.

T - citrusy hops. Some breadiness in the middle. Quite a bitter finish. Hardly any sweetness.

    F - Very smooth. Medium-low carb.

O - I love that Triple Crossing keeps the bitterness at the forefront of their NE IPAs. Still haven't had a beer of theirs that I didn't love.

New Imperial India Pale Ale Sunday!!!

Well it’s been a while since I was on this thread, so I guess I’d welcome my self back. What’s up my NBS Crew? Well enough of that garbage, time for the beer.

Captain Lawrence : Tears of Green Imperial IPA.

For starters you can see this brew pours accordingly to the IIPA style, straight honey, Pale body with a bit of Hop Haze/Unfiltered. Looks appropriate for my liking.

The aroma first hits you with that Citrus edge (Tangerines and Lemon vibe). Secondly there’s a nice Spice/Herbal (Spearmint and Weed Stem). There’s a nice Honey Graham maltiness that grabs my attention.

Da Flavah? First hits the palate with a huge Orange Citrus blast! Picture Oranges and Lemon peel assulting your tastesbuds with no lube! Secondary flavors of Mint, Weed and slight Passion Fruit tropical notes. The malts are there (Barely) with enough sweetness to blanket the hops. The feel of the brew is Medium light with heavy carbonation.

Overall: This is a nice change of pace for an Imperial IPA. The Hops shine and very minimal bitterness. The aftertaste has that resinous Weed Stem flavor that I enjoy thoroughly. I’m glad that a brewery wanted a highly Hopped IIPA that was drinkable and the Hop flavors shines forth! This is an instant classic (for me), but I can see it getting lost in the sea of other “highly Hopped Hazy/Unfiltered” IPAs. All in all, this beer is recommended!

    Grade: A-

    Cheers my fellow NBS Crew!

A-Very nice sharply acidic aroma with hints of maturity.
T-A nicely done balance with hints of oak tannins and mustyness.
M-A light bodied nice balance of sourness, a certain tartiness and great hints of nature and wildness
O-A very well done, very well balanced beer!

Bob, I was recently (last week) in New Braunfels visiting family and friends. I even got a chance to attend Wurstfest a couple of evenings. I always have a great time at Wursfest - lots of good wurst to eat, good bands to listen to (my favorite band is the Alex Meixner band) and needless to say good beer. I drank some Warsteiner Dunkel but mostly I drank Karbach Hopadillo IPA since I shared pitchers with my wife who is a hophead.

    Cheers!

    G'day to all the NBSites!

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

Another beer from the Growler station at Liquor Shed in Casper. It never ceases to amaze me with what Jacob at Liquor Shed brings into the store.

This is Upslope Tequila Barrel Aged Barleywine and it's a total winner in my book:

From my 16 ounce Prowler bought at Liquor Shed. It pours a really dark brown with reddish hues, small tannish head of foam, pretty good lacing.

Rich caramel malt, molasses nose. Tequila is not up in my nose, which I like, but there's some booze, which doesn't bother me.

Mmm...so rich and decadent. Oodles of caramel and molasses that are very sweet but not beyond my comfort zone. It seems like I'm getting some vanilla notes, some booze from the barrel.

Fairly light carbonation with the luxurious mouthfeel. Wow. A superb Barleywine that just happened to be sitting in Tequila barrels. I want more. $10 for the 16 ounces.

This is a contender for best new beer of 2017 for me!

Keep the awesome posts a coming!

Voodoo brewery, voodoo love child. Copper orange color, light carbonation and a little thin feeling. Aroma is all fruit with some malt and yeast. Taste is a mix of orange and cherry juice ,it's a struggle to pick up much more. The fruit washes out everything in this one to the point where the tripel aspect is unnoticeable[IMG]

What’s up BA? Hoping your Sunday is going well, and there is a great new beer in your glass.

For the most part, my direct family are not beer drinkers, and my closest friends are strictly macro drinkers. I’ve tried some conversions, but not much success so far.

My local shop got some of the Stone BA beers in this week. I was going to pass but when I saw the 4.46 rating of Foydor, I decided to fork over the $19 for it.

Notes below. This is an excellent stout. Some complexity in aroma and flavor, but not really worth the price point.

Poured from 500 ml bottle. 2017 vintage

A: Very dark brown tending towards black. Smallish one finger mocha head that settles quickly with little to no lacing.

S: Bourbon, chocolate fudge, tobacco, charred oak, and vanilla.

T: Rich dark chocolate, bourbon, and vanilla with nice barrel notes. A subtle sweetness that comes off like honey or molasses.

M: Full bodied with a syrup like quality. Finish is very dry with prominent alcohol heat.

O: Excellent stout. My only complaint is the price. At 500 ml, this should be $10 not $19.

Happy NBS! The WI Badgers are 11-0 in football and have a good chance to have their first undefeated season since 1912. They just have to take care of Minnesota next week!

I'm enjoying a terrific beer from Hinterland, their 22 anniversary beer. It is a kettle sour, barrel aged, Belgian cherry ale.

It pours a cloudy red/copper color with a sandy 1 finger head. Small spots of lacing and a thin collar. Aroma is both sweet and tart. Plenty of caramel, toffee, and bread with hints of vanilla. There is a wonderful fresh bright cherry smell. Flavor is big on the caramel and toffee, but jumps right into the very flavorful cherry. It's somewhere between cherry juice and pie filling. There is a bit of vanilla an bourbon on the finish. This is a very flavorful and complex beer. It is medium in feel with light carbonation. I really enjoyed this and like the creativity.

Oddly enough, I have converted my sister wholly to the craft beer cause. She didn't like beer before at all, so it's not like I had to ween her off of AALs; I simply had to show her that there is such a thing as beer that tastes good.

She's a huge fan of sours and lambics, but right off the bat she fell in love with IPAs. She loves bitter flavors, so I took a gamble and got her some Sculpin, and she never looked back.

My mom is a big fan of Mich and Miller, but she'll venture out and try the occasional craft brew. We even had a small family tasting last time I was home, and she was the one who bought the beers! She also visited the NC Sierra Nevada tap room on a recent trip, which was an absolute shock to me.

My dad will enjoy the occasional craft brew if I provide it, but he loves his beer in the style of .... well, Monty Python said it best when comparing it to sex in a canoe. About the "biggest" beer he's routinely OK with is Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro, and even then, he's one and done. He's a fan of quantity over quality.

My wife really digs craft brews now, especially abbey style dubbels. Based on that, I've gotten her to explore Scotch ales and Doppelbocks, and she's really enjoyed those, as well. She'll drink the occasional sour, and likes lambics, but she can't stand IPAs. Stouts are hit or miss.

Her father loves craft beer, and even used to brew his own. We often share some beers when I'm visiting. He's never going to go full beer nerd, but he loves IPAs.

Needless to say, Thanksgiving isn't going to be a beer-centric holiday for me, but I'm sure I'll enjoy a few on my own at the very least.

Thanks for the conversation starter, CJ!

I’m back!!! New Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee Stout Sunday!

Well I am back because I like explaining a beer and what I’m experiencing while drinking a new beer. Enough of the sentiments, time for the beer!

    Clown Shoes’ Breakfast Beast.

This pours expected, dense Black Body with an off white Khaki Head.. looks the part!

The aroma? This starts off with Day Old Coffee, on the secondary it’s a blast of Bourbon with some Oxidation. Leather and Vanilla hits the hardest...not Bad! Very Enjoyable.

Da Flavah? First hits with nice Char and Coffee that has a welcome mat of Vanilla. Dense cocoa hits second but isn’t stealing the show. Some bitterness shows up but cuts the Sweetness perfectly. The feel is Medium built with soft carbonation. Some alcohol is present but is only noticeable on the finish.

Overall: This is a Nice Imperial Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee Stout. I will put it this way, I wasn’t a fan of Bourbon County Coffee Stout when I had it.. This one isn’t any greater. Yet, I can drink this on the regular because it’s not an exaggeration of the style or so complex I’m in awe after drinking it. It’s very nice, if you want all the flavors to compliment each other. This brew is Recommended!

Lakefront brewery fuel cafe.copd black color ,medium carbonation, leaves a slight bitter finish. Aroma isn't overpowering but there's malt/sugar, and some black coffee. Taste is similar with just a bit of cocoa added. Overall I would try this one again, not overkill on the flavor but still held up well[IMG]

Good afternoon, NBS friends and family! I'm settling in for the long football afternoon, after getting in a very productive run early this morning. "Finally" ( ) time for a beer.

Today's choice was something I planned on saving for next week, based on the theme, but I just found I didn't have much on hand that really inspired me for New Beer Sunday. And since this is the thread I look forward to every week (I finally caught up on the last two weeks!), I wanted to make sure I had a good one in my glass.

So, without further ado, here goes New Beast Sunday!

Breakfast Beast is a bourbon barrel aged coffee stout by Clown Shoes. For this beast, they went with three different stouts: Vampire Slay...err, Undead Party Crasher, Blaecorn Unidragon, and an unnamed "experimental" stout. I'm stoked about the last one, as I don't particularly enjoy the smoke of UPC (or maybe it's the holy water), and Blaecorn has just been too ashy for me the last several times I've tried it.

This is a darn good stout! Directly from my review:

"Huge nose! Bourbon, oak, roasted barley, char, black coffee, molasses, brown sugar. Lightly sweet red grapes on deeper inhales. Bitter, strong, intimidating.

More gentle on the palate, dare I say it. While not a dessert stout, there's a very pleasant level of sweetness, primarily as caramel, brown sugar, and molasses. Espresso-like expression of the coffee up front; rich and smooth. Bitter from start to finish. Oak is stronger on the back half, mingling almost oddly with the char and coffee. Bourbon adds overall character, and hints of coconut on the back end, but never overwhelms the beer."

One of the better Clown Shoes stouts I've had in a while. Not in the top tier of BBA coffee stouts, but a hell of a value for the price. I'm curious to try this unnamed third base stout.

Not a whole lot of reviews on this one, so my close-shave rDev is partially self-fulfilling.
