    Recent stout stuff.....

Went to the Abyss release. 2013, 2014, and 2015 tasted fantastic.

Baerlic released a BBA stout called Collusion. very well done

West Coast Drinkery has 2016 Matryoshka on tap. Damn if that isnt one of the smoothest and best BBA stouts around

Can't wait. Will be in PDX Dec 1 day of release of the variants for the HAF. Will still drop into the HAF for fun but Deschutes is definitely a destination.

Poorly phrased. Will be in town Dec 1 & go to the Holiday Ale Festival. But just finding out Abyss variants released Dec 1, will be heading to Deschutes as well.

BBA Stout: Doesn't get much attention but Phriem produces a mighty fine Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout. I just stumbled on one at Metropolitan Market, came home, opened it. It's sublime. I wish I had bought more than one. If you see it, get it. It is among the best.

This year's Abyss is mighty good from the get-go, in my opinion. (Just finished one at the pub in the Pearl. For quality control, of course.)

I question your opinion . Having just killed a mimivert of Abyss, at a local college bar, with friends, I'm not seeing any flaws.

Actually just came on to post something about the nw not being able to make a great stout anymore...
Abyss is good now... not amazing, it's too thin, bourbon blended down, etc.
Had Multnomah county today, smell was fuckin awful. Taste was ok, but I still couldnt finish it.
Drinking... or rather pouring out ruse deep sleeper... diacetyl... butter. Made me gag. Actually kinda want my money back on it.

Really? Fremont, Ft. George, Block 15, Alesong, Skookum, Holy Mountain, Pfriem, Farmstrong, Reuben's, Great Notion, and etc...etc...don't make great local stouts anymore--barrel-aged or not--and make them, by and large, readily accessible?

You must have exceptionally tough and idiosyncratic standards, my friend.

I assume you're referring to Cultivating Mass, right? If so, I totally agree. Though it does seem a bit boozy right now. Can't wait to see what it's like in a couple months or even a year or two. Gotta get me a couple more bottles!

    I am tough.
Holy mt. Not had any if their stouts, heard great things, ship them down to pdx.
Fremont, this time of year, yup. Theyre good. Cant deny.
Ft george... no. No thanks. Stouts are not good.
Block 15. Man. They are so hit and miss. I have had more butter puking from them than any other brewery in the nw. They are great at making ipa though.
Alesong. Actually... yeah. Pretty good. My wallet, however... They more expensive than Fremont special stuff.
Pfreim, not really, no. Thin, one dimensional.
Great notion, again, great ipa... Their stouts though, taste artificial. The peanut brother was overwhelming, and i just couldnt finish my taster. Double stack is way thinner than I would want.
Farmstrong, skookum, ruebens... not had stouts from them, but now I want to.

I am just a guy that's been drinking all day. And I have those opinions to back it up... The drunk opinions. Just my opinions...

Thanks for the warning on Ruse. Diacetyl is a beer killer for me.

As for "the nw not being able to make a great stout anymore," it would be hard for me to disagree with you more strongly. (See the post by @EdwardAbbey for supporting evidence.) But we already disagree on IPAs, so maybe we just don't like the same kind of beers at all. Which is cool. It would suck if everyone liked the same thing.

We don't differ on ipas, I appreciate the majority of them, but like others more.

I'd add Deschutes Obsidian to your list. It's been a great stout for years. Not barrel aged, not an imperial stout, just a consistently well made regular stout. I think it doesn't get the attention of others, because it's been around for so long. But it's still one of the best.

    I thought my list was
    long enough to disprove the
    claim, but go ahead.

Besides, that beer has already been mentioned on this thread, along with countless other worthy entries. A statement was made, perhaps ill-advisedly, about the PNW not being able to make a great stout anymore. Evidence to contradict that statement exists in droves, and I merely thought to provide a friendly and helpful refresher. The truth of the matter is that there has never been any time in history in which the PNW has produced more great stouts than it does right now.

We are all, of course, entitled to our own opinions, but not our own facts...

I think they have gone out of style.
When i am sitting in a tap house/ growler fills..almost all the younger bucks want IPA..strongest and hippest.
I cradle my Shakesspeare stout or whatever is available and smile.
    Old F*ck that i am.

I checked out the new Chunky Monkey Stout at Breakside Slabtown this afternoon, thanks in part to good numbers from @Kurmaraja and a well written review from @Lingenbrau.

It's a tasty one, nicely balanced, not too sweet, not too roasty. It shows an excellent collection of flavors. I don't know if they have any plans to bottle this one, but I would be happy to drink it again.
