What beer are you drinking now? #1866

Good afternoon, all! Now, I'm not at all squeamish about trying unfamiliar foods, but a recent encounter with chitterlings has me in full rethink mode. Known colloquially as "chit'lin's," this soul food staple was doubtless given its innocuous-sounding name to cover up the fact that it is simply chopped-up pork intestines. The "recipes" call for cooking these things with onions, bacon, collard greens, hot sauce, potatoes, and all manner of seasonings, and various web sites offer myriad tips and tricks for cooking them without stinking up your kitchen to high heaven. Why? Because these things need to be meticulously and thoroughly scrubbed in order to remove all traces of, as one web site puts it, "foreign matter." This, of course, is a euphemism for "hog excrement". Based on the sample I tried, it is apparent that not everyone is sufficiently adept at cleaning these. They smelled exactly as you'd imagine pork intestines to smell. (If you don't know what I mean by this, just take a drive past a hog confinement some time.) The taste was equally horrid. This raises the obvious question: What's the point? I mean, it's not like there is some fantastic culinary nirvana awaiting if you can only manage to remove enough "foreign matter" and smother them with enough spices and aromatics. I guess part of the appeal is that you can buy a whole bucket of 'em for a few bucks, but - again - why bother? I'll just settle for the bacon.

And speaking of spices, Boulevard Funky Pumpkin Spiced Sour. This is a very good sour, with lots of tart fruit character and brett funk and just enough pumpkin pie spice (cinnamon and nutmeg, primarily) to make it interesting.

I had chitterlings many years ago when I lived in South Carolina. I thought I was going to die!

These were given to me by an African-American lady who lives at the group home where I work. Her family cooked up a big batch on Thanksgiving. I didn't have the heart to tell her what I really thought of them. I just told her they weren't my cup of tea.

I also didn't tell her I gave them to my dog. He had no issues with them.

 

I'm starting to like stouts as much as ipas. I'm not sure if it's just a seasonal thing or if I've turned to the dark side.

 

Staying with the stout theme. I like this one, maybe more than the 200 Anniversary one.

Joining in a little early today. I put up most of my outside Christmas lights yesterday & started the tree today. My daughter woke up with a stomach bug this morning and has been home with me, needless to say I've accomplished less. On display is my favorite ornament, if Santa had a beer instead of an umbrella drink it would be perfect.
