I had to share the elation with someone, so I figured my fellow BA's would appreciate. Score one for the beer loving nation.

Now to figure out an efficient way to rotate and keep a fresh stock. I am not an alcoholic / heavy drinker (perhaps I should rethink that), so this will take some thought to keep it freshly stocked.

By "She", I assume you are referring to your GF or wife?

Congrats then. Make sure though that you still spoil her everyday. Life should be good, cheers.

Keep a spreadsheet where you add new beers when purchased and delete them when consumed.

Include on your entry for each beer the Month of Purchase, The Bottled on date if any, the Best By date if any and whether it has a short, medium or long shelf life (e.g., estimated from the beer style guidelines here on this site).

Then you can easily sort by such things as remaining shelf life and be sure you don't let anything get too old for the style.

Don't over think it. Buy the beer. Put the beer in the fridge. drink the beer. when the beer supply in the fridge get's low buy more beer.

I suppose I could use something like a spreadsheet but then I'd have to remember where I put it.

Yes, a variant. Been quite helpful over the years in not letting stuff get too old. (Especially in the years when beer in PA was mostly by the case only.) Also if you have a large enough storage space (e.g., even 4-5 cases in the basement) it's possible to review the list once in a while and move stuff being aged up to the fridge when it's gotten to the age you want to drink it. For example, in the Basement I've a bottle of Sofie that will be about 3 years past it's best by date when I open it since I've seen a certain person on here praise the changes that show up when it hits that age so I thought I'd try that for myself.

When it's just stuff that goes in and out of the fridge it's still sometimes helpful since I like to keep a variety of stuff on hand for myself and guests.

Wow....that's way too much work for beer.

If you have a beer fridge I would think you drink enough to see what's there and be able to not have anything sit too long.

    Enjoy

You're assuming he's getting a small beer fridge and will drink the beer First In, First Out.

As for the work it depends on how much beer you've got on hand and whether you are cellaring beer or not. Personally, I like aging some beers and I'm cheap so I don't like to waste money/beer by letting it get too old or beyond the age where I want to drink it.

    Very nice!

My birthday present this year from my wife was a small beer fridge. I think she really just wanted my beer out of the family fridge. She's a bit of an artist and got creative with it.

If you can find your computer to post here, you can find the electronic version of your spreadsheet... :sunglasses:

I thought I was the only one geeky enough to keep a spreadsheet of what's in my 'fridge and in my basement (aka cellar). I don't keep bottled on, etc., dates for the 'fridge (it is small), but I do for the cellar. Some might look at this as too much work... I look on it as part of the fun. But, then, I also used to use pocket protectors and a slide rule back in the day...

I suspect we also both know that when one has other things going on in their life besides drinking beer those memory cues can be userful. :sunglasses:

I guess everyone is different, I bought my beer fridge and had it delivered all by myself, and didn't need my girlfriends permission

That's cool. I've been thinking more and more about getting one. Details?

    Size? (Large or small?)
    Location? (Basement, garage, other?)

Well if I was just buying beer to drink it I probably wouldn't spend much time on that sort of stuff. But since I've been doing a bit aging for some years now (e.g., I have a small bottle of Drie Founteinen Geuze that's about hit it's best by date for drinking so I can compare my notes on the aged one with the notes I took on a bottle I had fresh).

I was once able to arrange a small tasting group where we had bottles of each of three bottling years of a locally brewed stout and the same three bottling years of that same locally brewed stout aged in Bourbon barrels. Learned a lot from that tasting.

As you say, a great hobby!

For you perhaps, but it would not be for me. I've been down similar roads in the past and have no intention of following that one.

Dang..... a spreadsheet. My head hurts already. LOL.

Yes, "SHE" is my wife. And I can't afford to spoil her. I buy beer with my extra money.
