Had this a couple years ago on tap and agree with you in others in that it lived up to the hype for me. Nice to see you and others enjoying it

    Good Morning NBS
I'm done with 3 of 4 nightshifts this morning, so no time for chasing whales this weekend. Although, today I am having this "whalish" beer for the very first time. I always passed on bombers, then couldn't justify the price of a 4 pack over Founder's RIS. When I had the chance to grab a can for $2, no hesitation.

    The review:
12oz canned 5/10/17 poured into a snifter at fridge temp 9.5% ABV. The beer pours dense black with thick & abundant chocolate brown head. The head recedes to an island and leaves behind lacing the length of the glass. The aroma is roasty cocoa and coffee. The taste is bittersweet chocolate that ends in roasty bitterness. Mouthfeel is full bodied, adequately carbonated and mostly dry in the finish. There is no hint of alcohol in the aroma or taste. Overall, excellent. World class straight up RIS.

Personally, I have this behind a couple other stouts, by the numbers. It's still really good and I will definitely be drinking more at $12/6pack. Enjoy the new beer in your glass today BA!

If I have one pet peeve it’s beers that are labeled for seasonal sales when they are normal styles. For example, I once bought a “Winter IPA” ... they could have left the word “winter” off of it as it contributed nothing but marketing. Oh well. Cheers!

I've been wanting to try this for a while and finally got around to it. I do appreciate a good Doppelbock every now and then and this Doppel Sticke is pretty much the Altbier version of one.

It pours a murky, dark brown coloration that looks almost black when not held up to the light, with a thick, foamy off-white head that develops slowly when not pouring at an angle but dissipates quickly, leaving a thin blanket on the beer.

Smell is quite rich, mainly sweet, caramelly bready malt and dark fruits, predominatly fig and plum. There's also a hint of chocolate and a slight booziness.

Once you take sip, the malty sweetness hits you first, with notes of dark bread, caramel and molasses. There's also a noticeable booziness that is not too overpowering though. Then the dark fruit comes through, quite intensely actually, with heavy notes of fig and plum and a bit of raisin. At this point the bitterness sets in, which is quite heavy at first, but becomes more bittersweet in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is quite rich and thick, almost chewy, with a slight oily quality.

This is one of those beers that sacrifices drinkability for a rich, complex flavor profile and I'm not sure if that's really such a good thing. I do like a malty beer, but it just seems way overdone here and while there is some bitterness to balance out the heavy malt sweetness, I feel that the overall balance is still off.

It's certainly a very interesting beer and I'm glad I tried it, but I'm not sure if I will ever have it again. I'm still quite conflicted on whether I ultimately liked it or not.

Well I’m back sooner than I thought. Kansas gets a lot of good beers now from all over, but we don’t get any beers from the great state of Texas other than Shiner and Rahr & Sons. So far, I really like Rahr’s beers and we’re getting their seasonal which isn’t always a given from breweries.

This beer is fantastic. It’s spicy, dark, and warm. Here’s the details:
Poured into a nonic pint glass.

Look: The darkest hue of brown without being black, ruby shows through when held up to light. The massively foamy head is light khaki and leaves the glass covered in foam bands before I even take a sip. Great head retention.

Aroma: Slight malt roast with cinnamon, subtle cherry tart, gingerbread, and a brown sugar finish.

Taste: This starts out immediately with brown ale characteristics of dark chocolate and toasted grains but covered in cinnamon spice, dark dried fruits, and finishes a tad hot and spicy.

    Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, dry.

Overall: This is really good with a lot of flavors, like a good spiced brown ale.

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! In regards to @cjgiant 's opening question, there are a lot of beers I'd like Tired Hands to bring back. They used to make some stellar, bitter-to-balanced creamy ipas, but now their entire focus is on super-sweet lactose shakes or variants on that theme. Heaven forbid you brew Mago Mago Tago Tago again! Or anything where you actually can discern the hops. Nah, let's just brew $25 shakes since everyone lines up for them. :pensive:

Anyhoo, I have no Tired Hands currently, so starting today with a new one from Singlecut.

L - 3-finger eggshell white head is dense and stubborn. After 2 minutes it has barely started to recede. Body is dirty orange.

    S - oranges, some dirty/earthy hops, a little booze.

T - orange, grapefruit at first. Getting that earthy/dirty taste in the middle, mixed with noticeable alcohol. Quite bitter. Very little sweetness.

F - medium body and carb. Rather drying.

O - Not my favorite from Singlecut. The dirt taste detracts from the whole. But I enjoy the extreme bitterness this brew brings to the table.

Beautiful fall day here in the Deep South so I need to head outside shortly and get some chores done, but first a new beer that comes to me thanks to @larryi86.

After reading the description, I thought it might be overly sweet, but not so! Very tasty stout indeed. Highly recommended.

Poured from 12 oz bottle. I think the best by date is in 2027 so I’m assuming this is pretty fresh.

A: Pitch black with minimal mocha head even with aggressive pour. Zero lacing.

S: Rich coffee, baking chocolate, vanilla, and light maple syrup.

T: Rich roasted almost burnt coffee although it mellows a bit upon warming. Very dark bitter chocolate and bold vanilla mixed with sweet maple syrup.

M: Full bodied with fairly light carbonation. Coats the tongue with a syrup like quality. Finish is somewhat sweet but not as much as I might have expected.

O: Excellent stout that showcases the adjuncts quite well. Many thanks to @larryi86 for the chance to try it.

Getchoo a beer and a few words and let her rip, my friend!

:joy::joy::rofl: epic episode ... and, yes, relatable

Been waiting all week to get into one very special for me New Live Oak Beer Sunday:
    Live Oak Oaktoberfest

Earthy as the dirt-hop bite comes out swinging. Deeper into the glass, the toasted malt flavors contribute more and more, toasted apricot at the sweetest, almost burnt apricot on the other end. The oak flavors (and a little oak aroma) are there but they're subtle ... in some cases I think they mix with that dirt-hop bite and add to (get lost in) a general overall bitterness. What's most interesting is how the hop flavor turns from earthy/dirty to floral about 2/5 into the glass ... the hop flavor becomes more like crushed rose petals or some such, much more delicate and in a way helping pull out some of the toasted malt flavors.

@cjgiant's question has me stumped. There has to be a beer that I loved that isn't brewed any more, but I can't think of it right now. Maybe that's good? Or maybe I'm losing my faculties?:thinking_face::thinking_face:

Trying to picture badgers with opposable thumbs scared the hell out of me, @TheDoctor, so I stopped. Perhaps those could be the next baddies on Stranger Things Season 3? :scream::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

    Cheers, NBSers!

L- The beer pours a dark amber with a modest 1 and a half finger off white head. Lacing is ample as the head recedes to a large central island and ring.
S- The nose is somewhat weak here. What I detect is a mix of grapefruit with some grassy overtones.
T- On the palate the beer is dank and somewhat weedy. There is an underlying sweetness which speaks to the strength of the malt bill. In the end the sweetness is balanced out nicely with a dry piney bitterness.
F- Carbonation is light and prickly. The carbonation fights against a subtle slickness. Overall mouthfeel is medium.
O- Other than the weakness of the nose this is a nice satisfying DIPA. It reminds me a bit of a poor mans Second Fiddle. If you like balance rather than bitterness in your DIPA this one is worth a shot.

Good early afternoon, New Beer Advocates! It would seem I haven't had any new beers since NBS #666, but I've got a couple today, both from big-name breweries. The first is from Southern Tier: Cold Press Coffee Pumking.

First off, I don't particularly like regular Pumpking. I find its flavor artificial; I imagine it tastes the same as chewing on potpourri. I did enjoy my one round with Warlock, however, and I've enjoyed some pumpkin beers in the past. Coffee seems like a natural fit for a pumpkin beer, and as a huge coffee fan, I think this one has some promise.

My review ran on a touch long, so I won't repeat it here. Instead, I'll leave you with my summary:

This is a surprisingly enjoyable beer. If you dislike pumpkin beers, this isn't likely to change your mind. If you love coffee beers, the strength isn't sufficient to overcome your dislike of pumpkin beers. The overall balance is actually well done, however. The hop presence is rather surprising, providing citrus and pine tones, along with moderate mid-palate bitterness. The mouthfeel is superb: lively up front; quickly settling into an easy thickness; dry, effervescent, and evaporating finish, leaving behind dry spices and a slight stickiness.

It's not so hoppy or bitter that Southern Tier is going to rush out and market it as an Imperial Coffee Pumpkin Spice India Pale Ale, by any means. I enjoyed this near room temperature, and that worked out pretty well.

Milltown wheat beer, bent river brewing.color was a cloudy burnt orange with just above average carbonation. Aroma was all grain up front and an odd vegetable wheat cracker smell. Yeast and malt eventually showed up in the aroma. Taste followed aroma almost exactly, not sweet at all, sort of like a dry wheat cracker. Can't say it was bad but not comfortable saying it was something I could recommend[IMG]
