So got a little Air BnB in the Logan Square area in 3 weeks. Have transportation, looking for some places that we must visit? Beer food and bringing beer. Cheers
Revolution and Hopewell will be nearby taprooms. Pipeworks and Off Color bottle shops also nearby. I'd also recommend going to Longman & Eagle. Further away, Half Acre and Dovetail is a good pair. Beer Temple and Metroplitan are also a nice pair.
i was actually thinking Kuma’s>Off Color>Pipeworks>Revolution for a solid day nearby. So have another 24 to figure out
Revolution can’t be missed. Hopewell is lesser known but a gem. Great space as well. Maplewood should have their taproom open by next week and they have great beers. Old Irving Brewing is a little north but quality as well. Hope you enjoy the neighborhood. Cheers
I just want to echo and add to everyone's great recommendations. Sorry for the novel - it's a great neighborhood haha. Two Logan bars to add: Owen & Engine, who has cheffy English food, a great beer list, and the best cask program in town. Crown Liquors by Hopewell has a solid taplist and bottle shop and is BYOF. I recommend Chiya Chai or Dantes for food near Crown. The Beer Temple and Metropolitan combo is a must. The revamped Beer Temple is phenomenal, and Metro's lagers and riverviews make for a nice session. Their staff is super cool too. I recommend Heliostat, Jet Stream, and Magnetron at Metro. And make sure to ask about the Scratch beer at Beer Temple. They're both BYOF, and donermen and Kumas are nearby. For Rev, the Kedzie Tap is a big, awesome, BYOF, open space (honey butter fried chicken is 3 blocks away). The food at Rev on Milwaukee is awesome, but you may have to wait for a table at peak hours. On the same block as the Rev Brewpub you'll find a great dive bar (Cole's), an awesome lager and sausage bar (The Radler), an arcade bar (emporium) and a solid liquor store (Vas Foremost). For coffee, Gaslight Roasters (same block as Rev Brewpub) is my favorite coffee in the city. There's an Intellentsia by the Logan Blue line too. Dark Matter Star Lounge in Ukranian Village is great too. For cocktails, Lost Lake (tiki) is an absolute must. Scofflaw (gin-focused) and Best Intentions (Wisconsin dive) are also world class. For bourbon and Michelin star fare, Longman is spectacular. To keep the tab down, you can so brunch 7 days a week at Longman. Their chicken and waffles with pork belly sweet potato has is absolutely delicious. For bottle shops, Beer Temple is my favorite. West Lakeview liquors is also world class. In Chicago, Binnys is king. Their Lincoln Park location is their flagship, but there's a location in Logan on Diversey. Vas always has a great selection. L'Patron has the best tacos in the neighborhood. Fat Rice on Diversey lives up to every bit of the hype. Reno, Lula, and Bang Bang are also neighborhood gems. Map Room in Bucktown and Local Option by DePaul are both with the 10 minute uber.
Some good recommendations here. Small Bar is also worth a visit. Great compact food menu and a well put together draft list. If you fancy a movie night head to Logan Theater - full bar available, fun midnight movie selection and often a good few tap options to take into the theater. Once you've checked out Logan/Avondale/Bucktown get over to Sheffields in Lakeview too - huge bar with three separate sections - excellent BBQ food and a wide range of drafts.
All of these recs are top notch. Longman and Eagle is probably my favorite bar/restaurant in the city, and easily my favorite brunch. Crown Liquors is a great bar, and their happy hour on weekends is great. $4 drafts until 4pm. The beer temple is also right down the block. Best bottle shop in the city, and they now have a bar, which has consistently one of the best tap lists in the city. My favorite pizza in the city is Paulie Gee’s. It’s neopolitan wood fire pizza, and you can go as simple or crazy as you want. It’s absolutley phenomenal. Wasabi is ramen joint, and they are wonderful. Also, you’ll be close to Wicker Park, so my recommendation would be to check out Big Star and Links Taproom. They’re less than a 10 min car ride away.
Go to Piece for pizza and beer. That’s all I can add. Everyone else covered it! You are going to have a fucking blast! The West side is where it’s at! Enjoy!
@Cannonball covered it all in his post, I'll just throw in a Coloradan +1 that FAT RICE is a must, they have some of the most distinctive dishes (taste and presentation) I've seen in my life. Go for dinner, though, and I don't recommend the actual Fat Rice dish unless you just want to try a strange version of paella. Everything "in it" is fine, on its own, but combined, just don't get it. Their other dishes are far more interesting... Otherwise, everyone else here has you covered. (FYI: Kuma's is OK for burgers, but I prefer Owen & Engine, and yes, it's been said a thousand times before, Au Cheval's single, with bacon, if you can get over to West Loop and wait it out).
Fat Rice is the truth, though I'd say I've greatly enjoyed brunch and dinner. Two brunches in a weekend of L&E, then Fat Rice would be great starts to both days. Also, again, 100% right about Owen & Engine. Especially, go on a Tuesday and get the deal, beer/burger/bourbon for less money than the burger other days.
It seems the brothers Alström will not let me add an event unless my account is validated. It insists on a mobile telephone number. Since I do not have a mobile telephone, my account will not be validated. Geez. So I'll hijack this thread to get the message across. Phhhhtttt. This Sunday, March 4th {keen hint - it is always March 4th} is the Logan Square Draught Beer Preservation Society's 13th Annual March Forth For Froth. If you did not click above, I'll tell you it begins at 4:00 pm at Metropolitan Brwg.; 3057 N. Rockwell St. 60618 The other stops on the march are 5:00 pm Maplewood Brewing; 2717 N. Maplewood Ave. 6:00 pm Owen & Engine; 2700 N. Western Ave. 7:00 pm Quenchers Saloon; 2401 N. Western Ave. 8:00 pm Logan Arcade; 2410 W. Fullerton Ave. I advise bringing cash for this march. Quenchers, as far as I know, still accepts only cash. It is a good march | crawl which I can recommend.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the info in this thread. I'll be coming to town and meeting up with some friends for a Ryuu BBQ > Lost Lake > Longman & Eagle > Revolution Brewpub and there will be something that each person will love.
FYI, about L'Patron . Check Please is a local PBS show where everyday people suggest and review restaurants. Note the comment about cash only and BYOB, on the linked site. And they're closed on Tuesdays.
So if I was coming in for an overnight brewery excursion the first weekend in May, was wondering if it made more sense to stay just outside the city for a decent hotel price?
You’ll get different opinions. My response would definitely be no. If you’re just coming in overnight, you’ll want to be closer to the spots you want to hit. If those spots are in the city, then you should stay there. Even if you want to hit some suburb places (FFF, More, Mikerphone), you could hit those up on the way in or after you leave the city (not the most convenient for More/Mikerphone since they’re not on the way), but you could do it.
Agree with @croush If you stay in the city, you can bar hop, eat delicious food, and go to a show. If you go to the suburbs, you can be surrounded by sadness. And you should be able to find a cheap arbnb or something.
Also, the places outside the city aren’t going to be that much cheaper. You can get a decent one night Marriott or even an Airbnb that’s better than staying outside the city.
