Before you start going on eventbrite trying to buy sours, just visit other places were they're easily accessible and learn the differences between styles. (Or most importantly barrel aged sours =/= kettle sours) My first sour was '13 Sans Pagaie which my idiot self thought I could finish a 750ml of to myself. I recall my tasting notes reading as "stomach acid".

    Easy ones to visit:
    Smog City
    Highland Park/Hermosillo
    Homage
Cellador (when they have events w/ tasting room open)
    Beachwood Blendery
Bruery Terruex (more sour end, though Train to Beersel is great)
    Monkish on tap

It may be rough initially, but just try and pay attention to the differences in styles, chat with the bartenders/servers. Id also try and focus more on ones that are either unfruited or aren't essentially smoothies, so you can learn some of the nuances, and respect for the overall styles (e.g. Berliner Weiss vs Gose vs Saison vs Farmhouse vs Sraight up Sour, etc)

frosty you just blew my mind with all that info. Imma have to wait until I got a Guy who knows whats going on with sours. Don't want to dive head first without being properly guided.

Usually the bartenders will help. Jeremy and Square at the Blendery are awesome for that.

Had a small pour of Cookies while filling growlers tonight on my way home from LA, its a 360 from the OG which IMHO is a very good thing, so much less sweet sticky vanilla and milk sugars, this could blossom into a very good DIPA in a few weeks, without a doubt its still one of the weirdest beers Henry has done, not for everyone.

    Cheers,

True there, but they're both guilty, this batch is more Monkish than Omnipollo, regardless who wants to take co-credit, it's a freekin weird beer.

    Cheers,

You probably had 20+ years to go from AAL to Sierra Nevada to where you are now in craft beer.

Imagine going from Pacifico at the grocery store to standing in line for Monkish in only a few short months. That is pretty wild.

From his early posts, seemed like not a troll.

Like it a lot. The Mexican flavors really lend well to a sweeter stout in general, IMHO.

Now that you put it that way, it is pretty wild. beeradvocate has sped that process up by allowing me to join in the hype of beers and by finding out whats HOT and whats NOT.

There's a lot of sleeper beers at local stores. Don't just follow what's hot now. Explore your local market.
