    Is that a copy of Gordon Strong's Brewing Better Beer on the table? Was it used to settle a heated judging argument?

    That's very kind of you, but I'll be disappointed if I don't make the top 10.

    Drum Roll Please...
    First, I'm happy and proud (BA proud) to report that according to the judges there were no bad beers.

    Second, There Can Be Only One! The judges didn't always agree about everything, but they did ultimately agree about first place. The winner via BoS Round style judging consensus is: "Modestly Perfect English Porter" (BJCP 13.C English Porter). The additional ingredient was Brown Malt. The brewer is @pweis909. Congrats @pweis909, you have some very awesome brewing gloves coming your way.

    But wait, there's more! The judges also awarded an Honorable Mention (HM). At this point I should reiterate that (I'm told) there were no bad beers in this competition. The HM decision took a very long time to sort, because there was more than one beer being argued for. After a while, I asked the judges if they believed they were arguing over above average beers or if they just felt that there should be an HM. They replied in the former. Game on!

    HM goes to "Dubbel" (26B. Belgian Dubbel). The additional ingredient was Wyeast 1762 - Belgian Abbey II. The brewer is @Naugled. Congrats @Naugled. Alas, I don't have another pair of brewing gloves to send.

    At this point, I need to reiterate that according to the judges there were no bad beers submitted. While this was "BoS Style" judging, and thus no numerical scores given, I did listen to pretty much every word of the discussions, and I'll go only slightly out on a limb and say that based on what I heard, all entries were probably 30-ish+ beers. Not too many flights can say that, so kudos to everyone who took the time to brew and submit!

    Doh! I nearly forgot to thank our judges:

    @DrewF
    @StupidlyBrave
    @StupidlyBrave's very astute friend (and owner of a downright scary palate, truth be told) who worked as a professional taster (and whom I won't name here unless told it's okay...interwebs, privacy and all that).

    Thanks for taking the time to make the event possible!

    Congrats @pweis909! Looks like a tasty recipe, might have to steal it .
    So what were the other entries? For the record, I submitted a Marzen (of sorts). It was pretty much a 50/50 blend of Maris otter and Munich, the extra ingredient was WY2633 Oktoberfest blend. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out as solid as hoped (obviously, since I didn’t win). Thanks again to @VikeMan for putting this together. Can’t wait for the next AP project.

    That was a lot of fun. Thanks to all who took the time to make entries for us to try and to @VikeMan for hosting the event.

    Yes, my wife is a supertaster. And I brought Gordan Strong's book to help me translate her tasting vocabulary into beer.

    Thanks for running this Vikeman! This was a lot of fun.

    One other thing some may be interested to know about this beer is that I used a brew-in-a-bag mash.

    I did a Wee Heavy. In the end it was Maris Otter, a little Munich, Caramel 80L and Roasted Barley (US versions as the LHBS sold out of UK), 1oz of EKG at 60min and 1oz at 10min, Yeast was 1318( as the LHBS was also out of 1728), BiaB as well for me. No additional ingredient as I wanted different Yeast.

    The ingredients seem reasonable, although maybe 1318 can get estery for the style? I was a little concerned about this with my porter, but I don't think it happened. Did you like your beer?

    Oh yeah I do. I was only disappointed because it finished low on the SG side. Very malty sweet as a result but the flavors and esters i feel work very well together.

    Not going to lie, my next porter will probably be similar to yours, just not water adjustments, as I typically don't.
