So I'm sitting here drinking a Lagunitas PILS, and to me, it is an excellent beer. I just went to it's BA page to write a review and was shocked to see that it has an overall score of only 3.64, which to me makes it criminally underrated.

The date on the bottle puts it at only 20 days old, and I know Lagunitas can be tough to find fresh, so if people review older bottles that may at least partially explain the low score.

But enough about me, I'd like to hear from other BA's, what do you think is the most underrated beer on Beer Advocate?

I had a Bell's Hell Hath no Fury Ale. I was surprised to find its ranking was 3.78. Very tasty, IMO.

You can probably attribute a lot of that to people not rating to style.

I don't get your argument. It is a basic beer with a rating of 3.64 out of 5 max. I think for the beer and style it is rated as a decent beer? What rating do you think it should be? If I saw that rating and was drinking the beer I would say its actually pretty spot on.

On a side note on two other un-named sites it is rated lower..... :stuck_out_tongue:

To answer your question I sorted by rdev and looked for a beer that is not limited release that I gave >than a 4.5 to.

    The answer is

    East End Monkey Boy
Hands down best Hefe brewed in the US

I thought this would be an interesting experiment. I sorted my beer ratings by rDev, and the top three beers that I have rated more highly more than everyone else…

    1. Miller Lite
    2. Corona
    3. Mickeys Malt Liquor

Y’all must think I’m such a beer caveman, LOL
But I will NOT apologize for liking what I like

I thought about replying with a couple beers, but then thought about the above responses. And they both make a lot of sense.
I'm not big on ratings unless I am considering buying something I've never had. I'll check it out to see what others say. But then again, everyone is different in their tastes. What you might like, I might not.
That being said, it's a scale up to five, and finding averages is (or at least it used to be) grammar school level math. So I'd have to say I trust the average rating.
Edited to add: I've been fortunate geographically to have some VERY hyped NE beers, courtesy of a friend who travels for work. Don't get me wrong, they are good beers, but in my opinion highly overrated. And I've been fortunate to have beers from breweries that have only a few reviews that are absolutely phenomenal.

    Good topic.

My rating for Prairie OK'Si was 18.6% higher then the average rating it received.

To me - OK'Si was an incredibly unique BBA Stout vs. many of the BBA stouts out there.

Prairie AA - if you're reading this - brew OK'Si again for fucks sake.

It's not a good pils to style so I'm not surprised.

If it's not at least one of the following: expensive, limited, barrel-aged, hazy, or >8% ABV, it's probably underrated.

I haven't rated it yet bc some of these comments now have me questioning myself, but I would guess it will end up in the 4.25-4.35 range for me. And I wasn't trying to make an argument, more of an observation I guess.

I was afraid of that when I was buying the 6pk bc Lagunitas tends to hop the shit out of every style they make ie Wilco Tango Foxtrot, but I was pleasantly surprised and thought it ticked most of the boxes that a good pilsner should. What aspects of the beer make it not to style for you?

Top 10 off my review list with rDev in parentheses:

    Old Milwaukee (+90.1%)
    Miller Lite (+70.3%)
    Lone Star (+61.2%)
    Lone Star Light (+56.0%)
    Hamm's (+53.6%)
    Coors (+51.7%)
    Budweiser (50.8%)
    Coors Light (+50.2%)
    Miller High Life (+41.6%)
    Meta Premium (+40.8%)

For what it's worth, none of those Top 10 beers show up in my actual Top 50. If I'm counting right :nerd:, Ole Milwaukee is the highest rated at No. 58.

One could argue, of course, that I'm overrating the underrated, but why argue when there's beer to drink? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
