I'm sitting at a bar now, and a man ordered his pint of beer and a separate pint filled with ice. He then consumes the beer by pouring it in the pint glass full of ice. It's an IPA. The gentleman is middle aged. Is this something from that generation? I've obviously have seen beer "cocktails" that are served over ice, but not just a full, straight beer.

My aunt drank beer over ice, but ive never seen anyone else ever do so. But if it works for him go for it.

I actually saw this in Ireland. The couple was drinking Coors Light bottles poured into a glass of ice. They drank Coors Light as we drank Guinness and talked to them about their culture. Go figure!

    I don't think it's generational. I think it's personal preference.

I once put an ice cube in my Uncle Jacob's Stout. I'm not middle aged, and it was only one cube, so who really knows.

Yeah, not knocking personal preference but it was certainly a "really?" moment when I saw it.

I’m a beer advocate. If someone prioitizes low temperature over alcohol concentration, then as Paul McCartney said, drink and let drink!

    Or something like that...

I've never seen someone request ice for beer, I've seen it requested for wines (red and white) and cider (about the only thing that came with ice in Ireland). But, I'll stick with being a beer geek, I care about what's in my glass, not what's in yours.

Just a preference i believe. Ive worked at numerous ale houses and typically the people who ask for ice get a bud light or something in that range

In Vietnam beer is served warm and poured over ice very commonly I understand

The only time I have seen this was an older couple ordered their beer and also a glass of ice and proceeded to pour and sip from the iced glass. I never gave it a thought but it sounds very similar to this. Honestly I think it is just a preference or habit, most likely they always have done this and it tastes normal to them. Like others said if it makes em happy cheers.

About 30 years ago I was at a bar and saw two ladies drinking Bud bottles from a glass full of ice with straws. That whole night was a bit off.

    Enjoy

Sounds to me like a good way to extend your drinking session without spending very much money.

This reminds me of a drinking lunch session that I once had along with a couple other associates and a business customer who was double the age of any of the rest of us (we were in our 30s). It was a martini lunch. We didn't realize at the time that he was spooning the ice from his water glass into his martini while we drank ours and ordered another round or two so that it became the classic three martini lunch. (Times have changed a lot since then.) He was sober when lunch was over. I paid the bill. We all had a good time, but we didn't get any increase in business coming our way from him.

Back in the 70's during the summer one bar in my hometown sold Schlitz Twists; Schlitz Malt Liquor on ice, with a twist of lemon. I liked them at the time, but back then I'd drink anything.

I’ve done it with AAL’s the that were a little warm, didn’t hurt it much, but I drank it pretty fast

He may like IPA's but likes the rock in there doing its thing. Not sure. It sounds strange. But. Not my glass, so it's not my problem.

One time we needed to pregame for a wedding in a short amount of time and the local liquor store didn't have any cold beer, so we drank Coors Light over ice in the parking lot of a Motel 6. But I imagine this isn't the situation your middle aged gentleman found himself in.

I've seen older ex pats do it down in Ensenada, Mexico (the beer was Carta Blanca if I can recall correctly). Anyway, it just seemed like personal preference. I could imagine doing it with an AAL, but not an IPA.

I played softball with a guy that did this with either Coos light or Bud light. I can only guess he did it because the ice would at least add some flavor.

Malt liquor. My grandmother's beer of choice. Always had Colt 45 in the fridge in the 8oz cans. She would pop a couple of cans in the small section of her icebox that had ice trays to chill and then pour them on top of ice. It was a production, get the ice trays out of the small freezer section and pop them into the ice bucket, ice the glass down and then pour the Colt 45 on top. Talk about a head. Actually quite good truth be known
