I use to criticize JO on here (constructively) I would get crushed. Good to see some people have come to their senses. Did a side by side CBS vs BM. Embarrassing, CBS smoked it in every regard. I guess just don’t ‘get it’

Have they come to their senses or are the emboldened by the "Jackie O's is too expensive" circle jerk that's so fun to join around here?

Say, by any chance do you happen to love Nut Smasher and those painful Listermann stouts?

Vietnamese Nutsmasher is on point, not sure where your going there with that comment.

Buuuuuuuuut, I love when you post.

I’m just here to sit back and watch this all unfold. Popcorn if you will.

Glad to see you are comparing two completely different types of beer to each other

Don’t pay attention to the fact one is a Imperial Stout and the other is a Porter. They both have Maple, hence they are the same thing.

As for Jackie O, I feel the same as some have said about their barrel stouts and pricing. But I'll also say I dont know of any other ohio brewery that makes their barrel beers so available allowing everyone access to criticize the beers. Not just available but variety as well. Only other brewery I personally could have a conversation about in regards to barreled beers is wolf ridge, but they don't distribute that much beyond columbus if there is left over from a release.

I do get excited when I see barreled non-stouts offered by Jackie O. I remember loving lathrone and noble sorrel. I just saw wood ya honey on the shelf at heinens, I would have grabbed it, but I'm just going broke right now. Few years ago it was so rare to even see the base dark app on the shelf.

I love Jackie O's, but if you(the royal you) don't, who cares? I personally think CBS is overrated and Black Note is garbage... once again, who cares?

Merry Christmas, fellow drunkards. It's great we get to discern the qualities of beer to such a fine degree.

Very constructive. Also, apparently we're re-defining "coming to your senses" as "agreeing with me." Sounds right.

Super excited for this. While downtown and Ohio is saturated, I wouldn't mind it being there since I'm there quite often. But would much prefer Lakewood or somewhere on the west side.

Lakewood would be awesome. If for no other reason than I would most likely be able to walk there from my place ;-)

This is a never-ending loop. Inb4 the same old crew trash talks the prices of other in-state breweries that actually charge less per ounce, shortly after coming to the defense of these aggressively priced 375ml bottles. I truly welcome these "fans" of the Ohio beer scene to honestly examine and discuss this contradiction.

This thread more often than not seems to turn into an us against them, where the "them" is anyone that has anything other than glowing praise to heap upon Jackie O's. They're not above criticism, and this community isn't doing anyone any favors by constantly shutting these kinds of discussions down.

More time in barrels =/= better. Concepts such as a deft touch with moderation and nuance can not be found in Jackie O's Stouts. Maybe the bottles could be cheaper if they spent less time becoming overly boozy. For the few of us Ohioans that enjoy the other styles, they are certainly doing promising work on the Wild and Saison front, but many people here in Ohio, and even across the country, find that their Stout game can be off-puttingly geared towards a crowd that prefers bourbon over beer. I think that's great for a certain segment, but a lot of craft beer fans have begun to favor more approachable Stouts.

    Stouts are Porters.

Damn I could have sworn I sell out of their BA stouts and porters every time they come in. Guess the “majority” is just buying them up so the few of us that do like and appreciate them cannot have them. Merry Christmas!

I would gladly pay the $16 again for another Antik; that shite was good.

If a person thinks Jackie O’s isn’t adroit at their craft, or they lack nuance, I suggest hitting up the brewer for a tour of the facility. That may change your outlook. I am not the biggest fan of boozy stouts, but they incorporate the barrel so well into the base beer, and it actually seems to work like hand and glove most of the time.

In any case, I will take a $12 stout aged by JO’s for 2+ years over a $4, 12oz bottle of average IPA. I am looking at you Dankster Frog.

I can’t even begin to describe the level to which I disagree with you. No nuance? Have you ever drank a Spirit Beast or a Cellar Cuvée blend? All I’ll conclude is that you don’t drink many Jackie O’s barrel aged beers

Not disputing that--in fact, I'm one of the folks that stressed this to Brad when he stated he began distributing out of state because his BB beers weren't moving in Ohio. But outside of the obvious fandom of many of us (I include myself here), one of the reasons they get sucked up so fast is because allotments are so small and there is still quite a substantial number of people that haven't had them.

I never said I was one of the people that didn't appreciate all of their Stouts, but some of their highest visibility BB beers, like Champion Ground, Black Maple, Dark App, and even Wood Ya Honey, can just be ferociously hot, and that's not for everyone. I'm all for barrel character but a year is a really long time for a non-sour beer to sit in a bourbon barrel, especially one without a lot of body--both attributes together enable an extreme amount of booze to burn through any nuance that might have developed during a shorter timeframe. I think one of their brews that escapes this fate is regular ass BB Oil, and sometimes I think it's aged with less time, but even if not, this is one that plays well with that level of bourbon barrel aging.

I'm not saying I dislike all of their Stouts, but many of them are quite ostentatious. That said, the Spirit Beast and Cellar Cuvee series is outstanding--these are perennially some of my favorite brews in the state, but they are also extreme outliers, and are created with exactly those attributes you've mentioned in mind. I've said this before, many times, and I'll say it again: Jackie O's works some kind of magic when they do blends.

I have reviewed 92 JO brews, I'm not exactly hiding my views on their work, but my higher scores heavily favor their sours and blends.

I will continue purchasing and enjoying many of their brews, god knows how many dollars I've dropped on cases of their bottles, but let's not pile on BAs with valid and acceptable criticism regarding price and personal preference. These criticisms are voicing a pretty consistent theme, and at some point, the $12 375ml bottle is going to be overpriced for the majority of their in-state consumers, if it hasn't already reached that point.

We can all disagree...let's try to make it a little more enjoyable and interesting...and maybe less dismissive and smug. Bah humbug!

I tend to disagree with the “soon to be overpriced” theory. Beer prices are not trending downward. They are trending upward. That doesn’t just include stouts. That’s of course if you want quality. There are quite a few new breweries over charging for their product. Actually some of them should be charging us to drink them...”no names please!” As many have said, you have said, I have said, we will all speak with our wallet. We all have our preferences as well. Maybe we all shouldn’t be so defensive and overly critical of the beers/breweries that actually produce world class beers. Myself included. Maybe we should focus our criticism at those breweries that are sprouting out of the woodwork that are producing CRAP and taking up our shelf space. Sadly, those seem to be the ones moving at the moment because they are NEW. Anyways, rant over. And everyone on here enjoy their Christmas (or whatever it is you celebrate) with those closest to you! Cheers!

I legitimately feel bad for you that you drink Jackie O’s beer and think you’re drinking the same thing every time. What a sad existence.
