    Hi All,
I came across a box of old stouts in my basement today and was wondering if they are still good. Probably about 5 years old and include things like Founders CBS and KBS as well as some other big names. The temperature down there stays pretty constant. Appreciate the feedback.

Upcoming holiday weekend, start drinking, although some of what you have could be over the hill.

To answer your initial question, yes, beer is still good. Yo your specific situation, I’m sure those big stouts will be delicious

Wouldn't trust it. Send them to me. Better safe than sorry, as they say!

Stouts can age, I had an 09 bourbon county recently that was incredible. Kbs and cbs will probably not be great at that age, the coffee is probably completely faded.

I bet they're bad, I'll be happy to take them off your hands and dispose of them properly. :-)

No way, drain pours. Beers that are a few days past the bottling date are no good.

Oh I'm sorry I thought they were IPAs, my mistake...these should be fine.

Chances are pretty good that the CBS, KBS, and any other BA Stouts have developed nicely. BA Stouts tend to keep well, though the coffee has either fallen off in flavor - or less likely, it's developed a green pepper taste. I have gotten green pepper taste from FBS in a year of aging, though that flavor may be overcome by bourbon.

Besides KBS and CBS, what else do you have specifically?

Only 5 years old? May as well leave them down there for another 5 years. You're good either way :sunglasses:

Does anybody else find it extremely hard to believe that someone could "forget" about a CBS in their possession, especially a 2011 bottle?

Agree, I'm not buying this B.S.

So found these expensive, rare beers, with unknown age and does not know if they are good. But knows enough about beer to find this site

Be careful, these may not be safe for you to drink. 5 years is a really long time. What I would suggest is you box these up and send them to me immediately. I'm a professional with many years experience, I will dispose of them for you at no charge..:grinning:

Perhaps it's admitting too much but I have put stuff away and forgotten about it numerous times. If it's a beer like a stout it makes for a great 'oh shit look what I found' moment when you find it. And then there's the other side of the coin when I discovered a more than a year old four pak of Heady Topper.

Buy enough stuff and eventually a cellar survey becomes a voyage of discovery.

I love how everyone makes it sound like everything ages and gets better. I've never had a beer get better with age really. Yeah, my sweet spot for IPA is six weeks, and some bigger beers need a couple months to come together, but BA beers have already outgrown that awkward adolescent stage and are ready to go when the bottle hits the shelf. Will these bottles get you sick? Nope. Will they be as good as they were fresh? No way.
