    Hey guys,

I just started out in the forums. I’m not sure if I’m in the right place or not, but I was looking to find out more about the risks associated with owning a beer sales distributor in New York and what the insurance needs are?

Welcome to the BA site, ES1102. Your question would be seen by more of the general BA audience in the Beer Talk forum. The general answer to the business risk question is the same as any other business -- you can lose your investment if you are not a good businessman.

Your question about insurance is one that I can answer for you, and the insurance can protect you against some of the business risk, but not all. You still have to be a good businessman beyond the insurance.

You will need property and liability insurance, auto insurance for the sales vehicles and trucks, and probably liquor liability insurance if you get info the process of serving alcoholic beverages at tastings, etc. There are other lesser risk exposures too, but you'll have to get an exact answer from a licensed insurance agent.

Hello ES, welcome to BA. We can offer general opinions but since your questions seem specific I suggest you call an insurance agency in New York.

    Welcome to the site!

Given the variability in laws, etc. from state to state, the Mid-Atlantic forum would be the place for you pose your question. Also, if you don't know of it yet this website might help you answer a variety of questions as to what's involved.

As @Squire123 mentions you need to talk to an insurance agency to get some relevant details, etc. In addition I'd suggest you find yourself a couple of beer distributors to chat with about some of the issues of starting and running such a business.

Then sit down and write yourself a draft business plan. That will stimulate even more questions that you will want to think about and it will give you a framework that can be adjusted as the reality of the details sets in.

Finally, if you decide to follow up with your idea, and before doing any real investments, etc. get yourself a good lawyer who knows the relevant laws in New York to review your business plan, etc..

    Good luck!
