I don't think stuck sparge would work in a heartsick, forlorn country tune......or in a love poem. I CAN hear Gomer Pyle saying, "Sarge, I stuck my sparge".

Alright you all! I'm back and I am liking everything I see. did you know that facebook will put you in jail for that. Well they don't know me or my friends very well do they? Who remembers wrong way feldman from gillgan's island. Forget the caps ok? He did everything wrong and he still took off . Why because it was good. I omitted garlic and cilantro from my dish. i used my home made sopapilla dough instead of pre fab wonton wrappers. When I was looking at the mexican sopapillas on the internet I decided they looked sad and not well thought out. I added cinnamon to my spices because to my dough I added sugar and I went back to a more classical style of beer for my serving. From apps to dessert I could put dry stout. Saranac's irish dry stout. I am officially drunk. cheers and thank you for all the Sundays!

Next on the list is a somewhat intimidating beer: Almanac Bourbon Peche, a peach wild ale aged in bourbon barrels. I am expecting nothing and everything.

The sour, musty, oak-aged notes rise from the glass immediately, carrying hints of tannins, vinegar, and peaches. The bourbon, while present, is somewhat restrained, adding a cloying sweetness behind the peaches.

I go in depth in my review, but here are the quick hitters on the flavor:

Incredible, incredible peach tones; I've never had a beer where it seemed like I was biting into an actual peach, until this one. Most prominent on the finish. Organic and natural.

Bourbon is very, very restrained, adding a musty, oak-influenced, dull liquor-like sweetness to the profile. It's very much in the background, adding depth but never showing its teeth - which is probably for the best.

Fairly sour and puckering; I'd put it in the moderate-to-strong category. Probably a little too much for a complete sour novice, but very approachable for anyone who has had sours before. The peaches are definitely a balancing factor.

Overall, this is an incredibly well made brew, and very enjoyable. The high marks in my score definitely reflect the incredible peach tones they brought out, as well as the restraint in the barrel aging process.

Couldn't agree with that more. Like with non-beer holiday offerings (see: lattes), pumpkin usually just means pumpkin spice, often with no pumpkin at all.

More traditional pumpkin ales seem to offer an earthy, vegetal tone. They're not exciting, and we Americans love our sugar and spice, so I see why the sweeter, more artificial offerings are more popular, but if I'm drinking a pumpkin ale, I want something dull and simple - not dry, spicy, and fake.

No, and even the roast malts should be subdued, mellow and well-incorporated. There's a tricky balance to the style, which is one reason I love them so much when I find them like that.

In this case, I'd just assume it's a smoked variant, like Jack's Abby does.

New Russian Imperial Stout Sunday (Week 671)
Greetings fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. Chilly day here, been a chilly few days in fact, with a bit of snow as well. Sky looks like it's fixing to spit a few more flakes actually.

In the spirit of Beer Advocacy is this beer from a fellow BA, @blom0117 ,who sent it despite my specifically asking for no extras. I do all trades with new traders nowadays as no extras/you send first. Nate, though, could not restrain his generosity, and this beer was added to the box. Nate is everything you would want of in a trade partner in every way, and if you want to talk about Beer Advocacy this man is the real thing. Fulton War And Peace, a RIS, with dark roast coffee from Peace Coffee added to fermenter. Also reviewed in past by @superspak
    [IMG]
Coffee, creamy sweet, rich dark chocolate notes, light notes of roast malt and caramel make a delicious medium strength arroma. Along the way faint hints of vanilla join.

Medium strength flavor, restrained coffee, less dark chocolate than in aroma, but it is very rich and full of flavor, also the roasty notes are apparent and add some bitterness, but in a similarly restrained way. Burnt caramel and a touch of hoppy bitter herb join the mix to close the sip dry.

Mouthfeel is medium in every respect, and has nice creamy characteristic, and just enough sweet in the finish to make this exceptionally tasty. I hate to ding this for a feature I think doesn't detract from this beer, but def. not as full bodied as optimal for a Russian Imperial

    Very delicious coffee stout. Recommended.

Will give more thought to top for 2017.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

And by way of thanking and wishing a Happy New Year to all my NBS friends, this is a repeat from NBS last year at this time

'Twas the New Beer Of Sunday and all through the thread
BA'ers admired their beer's frothy head.
The beers were all poured with exceptional care
To many a thirsty, admiring stare.
The smart phones and cameras took many pics,
So beers' tasty beauty to minds could affix,
    Magnetically drawing desire from all
Who gather each Sunday to answer this call.
But will it be tasty, will it smell great?
Will it be worth all the cost, all the wait
Required to purchase such worthy ferment?
Or will they regret all the effort they'd spent?
Eyes beheld beers that were poised near to face,
Judging the clarity, color, and lace.
Then many sniffs pulled of their beers' sacred smell,
    Discovering flavors bouquet can foretell;
Aromas to gladden the heart through the nose.
    In many BA'ers desires arose.
And now that first taste was at last gladly sipped,
And tongues enjoyed fully what past them had slipped,
And brains got the messages, pausing to think
Of the chorus of flavors caressed in each drink.
Will it be the best beverage to ever exist?
Will it be an elixir a Unicorn kissed?
Will it be a foul liquid to pour down a drain?
A beer to be warned of and treat with disdain?
Come join us today on this quest and you'll learn
What we NBSers enjoy to discern.
Come join us each Sunday, there's nothing to fear.
Happy drinking to all, and a HAPPY NEW YEAR

Happy beer to enjoy on 29 Dec 2017. Emblematic of harvest and holiday and new year.
    a) Pours a dark, slightly cloudy golden amber body with great retention, color, and lace.
    s) Abundant aromas arrive: resin first, then pine sap, citrus, fruit, and a see-saw of sweet and bitter.
    t) Follows smell, but showcasing the fresh, juicy, abundant wet hops: wood shop resin, fresh sawn pine, just juicewd citrus, fruit, and a newly built, splinterly see-saw of sweet and bitter.
    f) Body is moderate with keen finish of hop dryness, malt. Slightly cloudy finish.
    o) Fine effort, rare, big.

Served on cask temp on tap at Carton tasting room on Dec 30 2017.
    a) Amber, hazed, muddy brown body, capped with a lasting tan head; lacing and retention are ample.
    s) Nothing overdone, yet complex. Aroma bursts with spice cabinet: chile, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, pumpkin, vanilla, and molasses over a creamy thanksgiving squash puree.
    t) Follows smell but more malt and fruit flesh. Sweet, spicy, malty, roasted, baked“acorn squash” peppered with chile flakes.
    f) full fruit body, with moderate carbonation and clean food pairing finish.
    o) As fine a doppelbock, squash beer to be found from the land.

As always, we believe our own (Carton in my home town), our water, our terroire is best. You gotta love where you live. And I do love Carton beer.
A – Blackish brown color, head retention was not so much, a khaki tan. Spotty, sticky lacing.
S - Sweet, honey, mead, dark cherry, a bit of coffee and orange. Liqueur like.
T – Wow! Lots of flavour pours forth and yes it will accompany winter roasts and succulent food well. Aromas of sweet raisin, wood, resin, dark fruit, orange, dense. A tapestry. Not much hop, or alcohol in the taste. Very meditative.
M – Rich, full body with light carbonation. Nicely drying at the finish.
D - Sweet last beer of the night, or with rich foods, and very drinkable. Needs a tulip or a snifter. Bold and great. Memorable. Save for an occasion.

Pleased to land this in current variety pack, always a bargain with WFM 10% discount on 24 beers.
SN probably gets half my beer budget between torpedo and their variety packs. And always a great price performance. This comes w Coffee Stout 4, Wintertide 3.8 and Pale Ale.

    a) Pours a extremely hazy and pale straw yellow body with 3 fingers of head that slowly fades to a= cap that leaves modest lacing, Hazed and light yellow.
    s) Juicy, citrus, with lesser malt and pine. Inviting. Ample.
    t) Follows the nose w power. Starts with juicy light citric, fruity hops the blends into pine and bready malt. Finishes clean, with lingering citrus and white pepper bitters.
    f) Mid bodied, but very clean and juicy, definitely invites another.
    o) A bargain that is approachable and tests well along side other juicy IPAs.

Pleased to land this in SN variety pack, a bargain with WFM 10% discount, when you get 24 beers.... comes w Coffee Stout 4, Wintertide 3.8 and Pale Ale.

    a) Pours a clear winter's night, dark brown-mahogany sporting a one finger head of beige foam with some stick and some lace.
    s) Full spice rack: ginger, nutmeg, allspice, molasses, brown sugar, almond, maple syrup with classic SN piney hops. Ample.
    t) Follows the nose w power. Ya gotta let this warm to cask temp and then it excels. More nutmeg/ginger, burnt brown sugar, and some char. Better as it warms and shows more complexity and sweetness, old fashioned cough medicine too.
    f) Mid bodied, and would like more ABV, gravity and fire.
    o) Hard to sort out winter warmers, but as always, SN ranks at the top for price performance, and leaves nothing out, including, as it warms, the wood fire.

Happy New Years Eve NBS! Stating my Sunday at 2SP with Best Wishes Imperial Saison. A tasty, mildly funky saison with nice fruity flavors, mainly pears and some hints of dark fruits. A little full body for a saison, but still a solid offering, would rate it a little above a 4, cheers!

Blue point winter ale. Appearance is a rusty color, lots of bubbles clinging to the side of the glass. Medium body and carbonation. Aroma is very malty, slight floral hop aroma, and some candy/brown sugar. Taste is very identical, not too sweet, a lot of malt and some alcohol heat. A slight lingering bitter finish. An okay beer but not memoriable enough to want to repeat[IMG]

    Lamplighters Werewolves of Cambridge

Happy New Years, BAs. Hope you all got some time off work and got to spend time with loved ones (and good beer) over the holidays.

Werewolves of Cambridge was a Christmas gift from my sister and brother in law -- the only other real beer drinkers in the family. It pours very dark brown with a finger of tan head that leaves sheets of lacing.

It's got a UK-like aroma of creamy malts with hints of roast, nuts, chocolate and cherry. Similar tasting. Almost like a milk stout, only with a more robust dark roast to the malts than a milk chocolate flavor.

Medium bodied, creamy, with just a touch of carbonation in the feel.

This is a perfectly pleasant porter. I actually like it a lot. 12/6/17 canned on date.

If I'm not back again today, a hearty thank you to the NBS hosts past and present. Cheers to all the present and future NBS posters as well. Wishing everyone an excellent 2018.

Happy final 2017 NBS! I enjoyed watching WI win the Orange bowl last night on Miami's turf. It's been so cold the past few days with no sign of relief until next weekend. No problem as I have many delicious winter warmer beers to sip on.

I'm starting off with Potosi Inner Sanctum which is a Brandy Barrel aged Belgian Quad. Pours a deep, dark amber brown in color with a 1 finger khaki head quickly fades and only leaves a spotty lacing on my glass. The aroma is fantastic with brown sugar, bread, sweet raisin and plums, with some yeast, toffee and sweet brandy. Flavor is very full with abundant candied plums, raisins, and figs. Very bready with some brown sugar, toffee. The brandy really gives it more depth and a lightly sweet finish. Let it warm and it really begins to burst with flavor. The body is soft and sublime, medium feel with bubbly carbonation. One of Potosi's best barrel aged beers.

Gotta love an altbier showdown! I was really impressed a couple of months ago by another Pennsylvania altbier, Neshaminy Creek's And Justice for Alt. Highly recommended if you can get your hands on it. It sounds like it's more in line with the Straub Alt than the Tired Hands. I'll be back shortly with a new beer!

A looong time ago another high quality Altbier was brewed in PA. The General Lafayette Inn brewpub produced a beer they branded as Alt! Who Goes There?

“Alt! Who Goes There? (German-Style Brown Ale/Düsseldorf-Style Altbier)

    Silver, GABF 2000”

    http://www.brewlounge.com/2008/02/path-to-philly-beer-week-2008-profile_05.html

The brewer there (and later owner) was Chris Leonard and he was very forthcoming with me about his brewing details for his Altbier which I incorporated into the Altbier that I homebrew.

It seems like Altbier, even though it is not an IPA, gets some level of appreciation in PA. Well, at least by me.

    Cheers!
