I have friends and relatives who, bless their hearts, know I'm a craft beer fanboy, so they buy me beer for gifts, like the recent holidays.
    That's good.
What's not so good is, they never ask me what beers I'd like. Not brands, not styles, they don't even request hints like "ask the clerk for something hoppy." In the instances when I've given them some basic guidelines, like styles or breweries I prefer, my comments seem to be ignored or forgotten. Or they tell me when they give me a beer I don't want, "I couldn't find the beer you asked for." Then I smile and politely thank them while thinking "You couldn't find any IPAs? Even Walgreens has IPAs in the cooler!"
They just buy random beers. Sometimes they pick by artsy labels; other times by punny names.
At this point I have several mixed-sixers of beers I will only drink when the zombie apocalypse keeps me barricaded at home.
    So my question is twofold:
    1. Does that happen to anyone else? and...
    B. any suggestions for what to do with those beers, other than the usual "cook with them" and the ever-popular "Send them to me and I'll dispose of them properly"?

Drain poor. I don't have space to store junk. And I'll never drink something just because it's there.

I've received sours as extras in trades, and as gifts. I've turned some of those around as an extra on another trade, or given them to friends that I know like those styles

I'm going to hazard a guess and say these are beers that fellow beer nerds aren't going to appreciate as extras/gifts, irrespective of style. Either that or @5thOhio is super high maintenance

The only people who have ever bought me beer are beer advocates and I welcome it. Good, bad or indifferent. I actually walked down to my local grocer to meet a local ba who handed me beer like it was contraband. You know who you are. Drink it! and if you hate it review it in new beer sunday at least before you drain pour it on the facebook for big likes and huge views on the youtube.

I save those for when I am already drunk and don't want to waste any good beers. At that point I don't care if I have to drink some 8 month old IPA or brown ale.

Out of the variety sixer I have had for Christmas, I only had one that was terrible (something mixed up with tequila or rum like the awful ''desperados'') that went down the sink after a few sips. The others were pretty good belgians, and unknown to me.

I said thank you kindly, and kept the drain pour secret until this thread.

What I would do in order of preference:
    1. Drink them and review them for fun? Who cares if they aren't that good, its good practice to review beers outside of what you usually drink. Maybe you'll be surprised? At worst, you'll end up with what you expect.
    2. Bring them to a party?
    3. Give them away to someone who will drink them?

If you don't want to drink them, bring them to a party. Someone there will drink them and appreciate them. That's what I do

    1. Usually no, as people know not to give me beer (they give me books instead). I did get some Swedish beer from my someday MIL for Christmas, but she had the foresight to ask a beer store employee to pick them for her.
    B. Since cooking is not an option, I'd keep them around for a party and toss them in the fridge for your non-BA friends.

Next time you have people over or head out to a party just bring them all. I am certain others will consume and you don't have to feel bad about wasting them. Or just sample them and if ok drink and if bad to you drain pour.

I like that you kept your drain pour secret (until it was asked or was relevant to the thread). I cannot stand people who social media their drain pours

Slip them into the cooler during a get together and let them go away quietly.

On one of my favorite beer Facebook groups, someone was given "Beers of the World". I swear to God, it included Corona and Bud Light Lime. Classic

Maybe consider discussing other hobbies with those that get you beer gifts or ask them to get you something other than beer? Or a gift card?

As for the beer you have: what’s bad about them? They’re old? Or they’re just not what you want?

    1) Maybe compare them to fresh examples as a learning experience.

    2) Use them as “curve balls” in blind tastings.

    3) Sample them. If they are bad, dump them out. If not, drink them.

    4) Leave them next to a trash can at the bus station. They will either get tossed or enjoyed.

My folks do it, and I usually just try to keep them in the main fridge to use them for cooking. They're trying to be nice.

I know exactly which box you're talking about! I saw it at World Market recently and was laughing so hard when I saw that. I think it had Dos Equis as well. There is also a "Mexican beer" one ... :joy:
