Staying in San Mateo for 3 months

San Mateo specifically?

Fieldwork is the only brewery.
Grape & Grain is the only craft beer bar to my knowledge

But drive another 15 minutes to San Carlos, and you have access to:

Ale Arsenal (craft beer bar with really great selection of taps)
Alpha Acid (brewery focused on hoppy beers)
The Refuge (restaurant which leans on Belgian/Belgianishstyle beers)

 

Also I'm sure you will visit SF during your three months, and it's worth it with the plethora of beer options. (See any number of SF threads on the Pacific forum).

And not sure when you're coming, but 2/9 - 2/18 is SF Beer Week, and encompasses all of Bay Area (although most events are in SF). I see a couple of events near San Mateo (Foster City is next door to SM, and Belmont is a 10 minute drive)

If you want to go south, in addition to the other options listed above I might suggest these bottle shops/bars:

Redwood City: K&L Wine in Redwood City (most of what they sell is in singles, so it's a nice way to try before you commit). For bars, Gourmet Haus Stadt has a beer garden with a smallish but very interesting selection, and Harry's Hofbrau is a quirky place that offers a pretty good selection of mostly CA craft along with some cafeteria style food.
Menlo Park: Willows Market
Palo Alto: Palo Alto Fine Wine and Spirits

Depending on where you are staying in San Mateo, SF can be about the same drive time as getting to Palo Alto so I'll also echo the sentiment that it's worth venturing into the city a few times.

You can take Caltrain into the city. You can also take Caltrain and transfer to BART, ans that'll take you to other areas of SF and east bay.

I'd say since you're here during beer week, check Harry's Hofbrau, Ale Arsenal, Gourmet Haus Staudt for some cool events. Harry's had a nice BCBS event a few years back with VR, Rare, Regal Rye, etc.

Ale Arsenal is an awesome beer bar, at any point in time.

 

wtf type of work sent you to san mateo? i take it your staying there and commuting south to silicon valley somewhere?

beer week coming up, since your here for a while no reason to go to Russian river and wait hours for younger. it will trickle down through out the bay

if your heading south to the tech area there’s also willow market and janes beer store in mountain view

 

I'm not sure which is actually more annoying...people calling it "San Fran," "Frisco," etc...or people getting up in arms over others calling it "San Fran," "Frisco," etc.
