"Bro, you don't know? If you have less space, that means fewer cans. That keeps supply down and demand up. I'm all about economies of scale over here and this is clearly an economics forum, in which I am the chief beer economist."

You've probably been spanked here enough, but you've clearly never read an article about or interview with Henry. As many people here have already said, not every brewer is just out to "make more money." See Russian River, Beachwood, etc. for examples of conscious, deliberate expansion that align with their owners' visions.

Well with the two new Modern Times locations opening in LA why not do some collaboration with Modern Times and Modern Times can teach them about online sales at the same time. Modern Times could finally take that last step to reach Monkish quality in the process more delicious beer is available and everyone wins.

I cannot wait for the dankness dojo to open up...MT sure does put out some solid cans, with NO LINE. maybe not as good as Monkish but never the less still pretty solid stuff compared to other cans that being released by other local breweries.

They already do online sales for their bottle releases. They can't do online sales for the cans because they don't have the cold storage space to put all those cans. The day those cans are filled, they have to be sold. Without expansion in cold storage, which is not going to happen, cans will never be online.

They could do really limited pickup windows of same day pickup or something. For example they could plan to have a beer finished on a Tuesday and put up sales on Monday for Tuesday pickup and say don't buy any if you can't pick it up on Tuesday. Clearly there is no shortage of people who come to the brewery in a day to buy stuff but this way people would know ahead of time if they got cans or not.

The canned beers must be much better than the growler beers. Even though the same beer has been offered as cans one time and growlers next (or vice-versa), Henry must have deliberately made the beers inferior for growler fills.

Speaking of "ease to expand", Modern Times should be a prime example on how many hoops it takes. They were suppose to open months ago. And that second location in L.A., which I'm guessing you mean the Anaheim Leisure place, that's not opening any time soon.

Leisureland was supposed to open last year. Not only is it not open, I don't think they have the permits to even start building still. And Anaheim's mayor loves new craft breweries in the city. Goes to show the amount of red tape involved in these things.

Modern times is taking forever to open because LA city is the worst. Also, Anaheim has issues because of the pool. Torrance is much friendlier than LA, and as long as a monkish expansion didn’t have a pool, it would probably be pretty simple in Torrance. Also, if they just made that facility a brewing facility it would be even easier, as tasting rooms are often the hard part in getting permitted.

Imagine Monks expansion having a swimming pool filled with haze? All the Monks HazeBros would be swimming in the haze pool with their speedos! Holy crap, what a sight that would be. :poop:

Friendly as it may be, the current location just doesn't have the space to expand and ultimately, this being the bigger issue, it doesn't sound like Henry is interested in doing so. For whatever reasons from maybe he wants to keep it limited to same day sales so that cans aren't laying around and folks actually try the stuff on tap.

Simply put, expanding isn't easy, even in the friendliest of business locations. Folks need to stop wanting business growth and risk associated simply because they want a specific product they do (cans) to be easier to get.

Monkish has every right to not expand, and that is ultimately their choice. But there have been and will be opportunities to expand if they choose. I personally do not care if they expand to make the product easier to obtain. My view is that monkish is leaving large profits on the table by not expanding. I do not see hazy ipa’s going anywhere except becoming more commonplace and if you make a good one there will be demand. So, if I was them I would be looking to expand to increase my profits, but maybe they don’t want to do that and are happy making where they are.
