I too "adopted" a new local brewery. I added them as a place, uploaded a place picture, then I have added all of their beers, and reviewed nearly all of them. I am glad to see that others have reviewed them.

I add beers for local, small breweries that may otherwise go unnoticed by BA. I rarely post a review immediately afterwards as well. I do strive to review every beer I add, but it's a process that takes time. I'd rather have the beer profile complete and live for others to see while I find an appropriate time to review the beer.

Besides, in OP's case, they can still add the picture, and review. They could possibly even add the brewery's description to the page. Sorry you didn't get to add a beer, but you still get to contribute valuable information.

I do the same thing if it's a brewpub/taproom that I'm going to go to soon.

Same deal for me. The small, local, and often new brewers should get attention. The reality is that even seemingly simple tasks can be barriers preventing some from contributing data. Nearly every one of my reviews is recorded on paper, to be entered on the website after a bunch have been gathered. This may sometimes be months later. The lag-time may be unnecessary lost attention for the brewer.

As for photographs, I used to add them, but the process is time consuming and cumbersome. Someone, years ago, suggested a app that supposedly converted photographs easily, but it didn’t work for me. If someone has (knows of) such and app, please post it for us.

This thread is interesting to me because of the few comments about adding a beer description for each beer. I've added a modest number of beers to the site along the way, but I have not added a description for very many. If it was easily seen on the brewery's website, I've added it, but I don't go looking for the info.

So some of you are saying that a beer's style category on the brewery page is not enough for you to make an informed choice to drink that beer? C'mon, if it's an IPA on the beer menu on the brewery's wall, and you like IPAs, go for it. Plus, there's almost always a description on that list.

I also have no problem if someone that enters it into the database and does not review it. I'm happy that it is already there.

    Cheers!

I have not found the 'all in one' app to do this, but yesterday I tried three different apps to see what works best. One, tinypic.com, does a great job compressing the pic so that your 1.2 meg pic is now down to 350 Kb (I'm just picking a random number, but my result was around 350). But I could not see anywhere in this app to reduce the pixel size. Two other apps that I tried were resizeyourimage.com and bulkresizephotos.com (which looked almost the same as Tiny Pic), but they both seemed to be mostly a cropping site, which I can do more easily with MS Paint. So I used the downloaded pic from after using tiny pic, and then went to MS Paint which I have always used for resizing and cropping (in that order of operation). Paint usually gets the avatar pic down into the 20's Kb range, but it becomes cumbersome (and frustrating) to get it any smaller. Frequently, however, it does end up under 20 Kb with those two initial simple moves, so then it's a snap to upload that pic without further work. I'm hoping Tiny Pic will help as a first step to compress the pic, then use Paint to finish it.

I hope the above makes sense, but long story short, it's still a bit cumbersome on some pics.

This issue was recently debated at length over here. But Ill add my 2 cents over here. To me, its far more valuable to have the beer added here in the database than not. By all means, review the beer you've added if possible, but I'd also take an added beer with no review over a beer added with a poor - half assed review. There are some local breweries Ill follow and add new beers as they come up, but I'll only review them if I get the chance to have a full pour and really provide a full review that contributes something here.

maybe it was easier to add a beer and review it when there were fewer beers coming out each year, but nowadays you've got breweries releasing a new 2, 3, 4, 5 beers a month! Personally I think its far more valuable to have them entered here (with as much information as possible) and additionally this makes it more likely that you'll get other people to also review/rate the beer.

Adding a new beer doesn't mean that person has an access to that beer. How are they suppose to rate something that isn't available to them or something that hasn't been released yet.

This what bugs me: Evil Twin Double Barrel Imperial Biscotti Break | Evil Twin Brewing. When it suppose to be: Double Barrel Imperial Biscotti Break | Evil Twin Brewing. If you add beers, keep breweries names out!

@superspak is one of the worst offenders. I even tried messaging him about the issue, but he seems not to understand or care. His response made no sense at all. Especially when you add so many new beers to the database, at least do it right.

If the name of the beer is wrong, submit the correct name under the suggest an update function. I've done this both for names and photos that were incorrect and generally that gets it fixed. Messaging whoever added it does nothing since they can't change it.

Been doing just that. By messaging him, I figured it would prevent him from doing it again and again. Well, that didn't work and he keep doing it. I even told him that I'm tired of submitting so many corrections. Just take a look at Evil Twin beers on here. I'm not up to doing it 20-40 times.

To be fair to @superspak, many of the entries under Evil Twin (and many other breweries) that contain the brewery name pre-date the clarification of the proper naming format for the beers (prior to that clarification, most users adding beers tried to keep consistency within the brewery to make it easier to find the beer in the list alphabetically).

The other spot where I see confusion is where breweries sometimes have a couple of different lines/brands of beer and then they need it in the name so there are not duplicates.

@DISKORD this is exactly what I was trying to explain when you messaged me. Noticed you deleted the conversation afterward. That being said, I now just add the regular beer name, so you can stop complaining.... Thanks for the call out though:rolling_eyes:

As before, I have no problem with folks adding a beer without a review/rate but I feel that no ratings should be allowed without at least one review.
It's frustrating to look up a new beer and see nothing but ratings. Numbers do not tell you anything about what the beer tastes like.

What if you go to a new brewery on the first day they are open? Are you expected to drink and review all 10 of their beers? Or, if you're at an established brewery who just tapped a new beer on your visit, but you chose one of their other beers? Are we expected to stick our heads in the sand and pretend that the beer doesn't exist? Reviewing should not be a requirement for adding a beer.

There is no need for anyone to be calling anyone out publicly about this... the policy was clarified not so long ago and there are plenty of beers in the system that do not watch the communicated policy.

@DISKORD Please keep submitting the updates when you encounter incorrectly named beers (or bad/incorrect pictures or any other updates). I will continue to process them and clean up the entries.

@superspak Please continue to add the beers, provide Commercial Descriptions, provide photos, mark duplicates, and other updates. I'm happy to continue to clean up/update things.

Also, just so no one loses any sleep, I have cleaned up all of the Evil Twin entries this afternoon/evening

To be honest, this was what brought me to asking the question and I appreciate both sides of the argument, and also your honesty is refreshing.....no hard feelings! I've always had fun adding a beer if it's in front of me and I find it's not in the database. Lets have a beer sometime if either of us are in one anothers' neck of the woods!

I feel a little funny about adding a beer and not reviewing it.

I add beers without reviewing them fairly often. If I'm at a brewery and I see a beer that isn't in here I usually add it. Sometimes I'm not interested in trying the beer, but I still want it to be easy to find for the next person.
