Fixed: Paste Magazine 62 Best BBA Barleywine

(English) barleywines are some of my favorite, and some of the best beers I've ever had have been BBA (English) Barleywines, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that you need to make a distinction. Some of the best (English) Barleywines rival and best spirit barrel aged Barleywines.

I'm not even mad that Fremont wins, because I've had some of their BBA beers and I could only imagine what one of their barleywines tastes like, but c'mon.

Also props to Wild Heaven for their base making the list. Height of Civilization is a masterpiece and I've not had the pleasure of trying the base beer, but I'm sure it is a delight.

Great, I have had 7 of them. Not bad.

    This I found interesting:

Rogue Ales Old Crustacean is barrel aged? That's news to me.

Not enough of these in my neck of the woods . . . I'm always complaining about a lack of barleywines.

I have and it's not barrel aged.
Looks to be a mix of Barleywines.
    Prost!

It is a mix, overall. The top portion of the list is definitely not a mix. That is even acknowledged in Paste's own comments. (See Paste blurb on the non-barrel aged barleywine by Wild Heaven mentioned in my first post.)

I feel there's enough distinction to warrant a separate list, but that's just my personal opinion, and I figured I'd share that.

Geeze, don't be so bitter, bill. (Get it? J/K and cheers)

Not yet in the BA database.
I looked at Untappd and it appears to be highly regarded.
Despite some users checking in and posting pics of THOMAS HARDY. Lol.

Interesting list for sure. Lift Bridge Commander doesn't get a lot of love by reviewers on this site. At 3.97 it doesn't even crack the top 100 Minnesota beers list.

Prison City Chin Check is not barrel aged. They do have a BA version that they put in 4 Roses Bourbon barrels, but the one listed is 9.7% and the BA version is 12.5%.

Only had one of the top 25, coincidentally, it’s the only one I’ve ever seen

You do realize that Paste it out of GA? They're always very bias with their "best of" lists. And I'm not sure why they didn't just stick to either barrel-aged Barleywines or non-barrel aged. Then, you also have English and American-style Barleywines, which are very different.

Had 5 of them from the list. As far as English-style barrel-aged Barleywines go, it's hard to beat J.W. Lees. World class!

Number one is from 2014. I feel bamboozled. I want fairly available beers. I'm curious how Mother of all Storms would have landed on the list had it been obtained. Otherwise, I'm glad Paste tackled a lesser sought-after style, and one of my favorite styles. Certainly more beers to be added on my "wants" list.

Glad Vermilion made the list as I rather enjoyed that one. And fortunately for folks who want to drink it, it's back on shelves around here.

Most of those from the list I've never seen/aren't available around here. Wish they were though. Love me some English-style Barleywines, barrel-aged and not.

Agreed. English barleywines are probably my second favorite style overall behind imperial stouts. I enjoy both styles aged and not.

I wonder if I could get by with posting an ISO:FT thread and just include the Paste magazine link for my ISO...? I must try more of these. I'm particularly interested in Fremont's more simplistic offerings. I don't think I have the trading ju-ju to land the 1000 or 2000 batch bottles.

No. Does that mean they're not allowed to have beers from GA on the list? Are you suggesting that the Wild Heaven beer should be in the spot it is? Thanks.

I'm just saying that usually GA beers are higher rated than others.

its odd that they include beers from 2014 on this list? if there is not time limit, I would put version 1/2 of Deal with the Devil, King Henry, 2012 Mother of all Storms.

that said, Brew 1000 is as good as I have ever had. just a masterpiece
