L - Trace mocha head atop a pitch black body.

S - strong bourbon. Chocolate, molasses, licorice.

T - Very hot. Bourbon stomps over all other flavors. Soy sauce, liquid smoke, and licorice come next. Some chocolate and roasty malt fight for recognition. Very boozy. Very sweet. Low bitterness.

F - medium body, low carb.

O - this needs multiple years to reach its peak. Currently its a bit of a hot mess.

Good afternoon NBS and thanks as always to @lordofthewiens for the thought provoking kick off today. As a home owner (1948 vintage cape in WMass) we look for the nicks and dings quite a lot. The major projects are always tedious. As an electrician for 38 years I have seen projects go really well, and take solace that they usually do. Even in your own home.
Today's offering is one I have been on the look out for, and thrilled to have found it locally.
What a delightful, big, bold stout from Oskar Blues. This will be a sipper for a bit before the game. and yes Go Evil Empire!!

Ten FIDY - Bourbon Barrel Aged

Oskar Blues Grill & Brew
Russian Imperial Stout / 12.90% ABV

4.19/5 rDev -6.5% | Score: 4.48
look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Pored from a can dated 11/24/17 into the Pint glass
A - Blackboard color, pillowy froth of light brown caps the offering, fed by well hidden carbonation.
S - Dark roast malt, chocolate malt, vanilla, some oak char, and dark roast coffee. A bit of the alcohol rises from the glass into the nose.
T - Cocoa powder, coffee, toffee, blackberry, Black Assam tea, a strong base of roasted malt.
M - Full in body, completely coating the palate, thankfully not to sweet from the barrel program, nice bitter center, and a full rich linger.
O - Ten Fidy is really good, this is a nice treatment. The body is amazing, palate response is toward the sweet and quickly moves to a more neutral position. A well constructed offering that I am thrilled to have experienced

New beer #3. Been waiting to try this for quite some time.

#NoFilter - Thomas Hooker
NE IPA - 7% abv
Canned 12/27/17 (25 days ago)
Purchased for $12.99/4 pack at Whole Foods
Score: 4.31 (+1.4% rDev)

L - 1 finger bright white head atop a dirty orange body.

S - tropical. Guava, pineapple, grapefruit. Accidentally inhaled some trying to take it all in. Yum!

T - Follows the nose. A bit of dankness/weediness seeps in after the fruity flavors. Moderately sweet. Very low bitterness. Booze is not detectable.

F - medium body, medium carb (more than usual for the style).

O - A very enjoyable, fruity ipa. I was worried the sweetness would take over here but thankfully the bitterness fights back. For the price (less than HopHands) this is rather remarkable.

Sierra Nevada Hazy Little Thing IPA This beer was canned on 12/08/17. It pours a hazy gold color with a thick long lasting white head that leaves a lot of lacing. The aroma is bread and citrus. The taste is also bready with hints of orange, grapefruit and lemon. The mouthfeel is light and soft so SN may have used some oats to brew this. The Finish is dry but slightly bitter,. Overall a very good and enjoyable brew.
There has been a lot written in these forums about weather or not Hazy Little Thing is or is not a NEIPA. I'm not sure where i stand on that issue and am going to call it a WCNEIPA.

Happy Sunday NBS players. A rather mild winter day here on the island with temps in the mid 40's. Sunny and rather nice. Going to relax and watch some football with the rest of my day.

It's funny that Doc brings up house maintenance as the fiance and I just spent the past week at a hotel while having major roof replacement to out home. When all that snow we got started to melt it was pretty much raining in our living room. On top of that we lost heat. Luckily things are almost back to normal and we should be 100% home this week. So yeah, owning a home has a lot of benefits but it's an expensive chore to maintain. Not to mention dealing with contractor s and getting help.

Anyway, my new beer today is NYPA, a pale ale from Peekskill brewing. It features citra and mosaic hops and is brewed with honey malt. The beer checks in at 5.2 % abv and has a 12/20/17 canning date.

A hazy pour with a nice amber blonde color and a frothy white head. The nose is decently floral with citrus fruit. A rather dry start on the drinking with a bitter hop flow and finish with a touch of sweetness. The hops are on the more subtle side but offer nice fruit notes of pear, melon rinds, and orange. I love how the bitterness blends with the citrus hops and really gives it that additional pine/resin feel. The malt balance is there and gives it nice body. The mouth feel is light/moderate but still very full of flavor.

Overall, a nice well made pale ale. I'm in the low 4's here players,

Jack's Abby BBA Sibling Maker Barleywine

Happy Eagles Victory Sunday, BAs! I'm more excited for tonight's game than I should let on.

So, I'm one of those homeowners who HATES all maintenance, yard work, decorating and other WORK that goes into owning a home. As long as I'm keeping the structural stuff like the roof and gutters done, and it's clean enough, I'm more into comfort and function than cosmetics. I WD-40ed the garage door, but skipped out on the basement redecorating we were supposed to do this weekend.

I never minded renting, and wouldn't be surprised if I go back to renting at some point later in my life. But the absolute worst thing for someone with my temperament was owning a home with an HOA. Holy f-ing s-, BAs.

Our "starter home," as realtors derisively call them, had a home owners association. Can you imagine the personality of someone who walks around the neighborhood and writes a letter to their neighbor saying they used the wrong sized bark mulch chip? Swear to Chuthulu, it happened to me.

Anyhoo... This is a beer I picked up in Massachusetts over the holidays. Jack's Abby's Brewery Maker Barleylager was one of the best beers I ever enjoyed, so I was excited to pick up this one.

Sibling Maker pours a relatively-clear figgy brown color with a half finger of light tan head that settles into a nice crown.

Sort of smells like a stout. I'm getting chocolate malts along with the bourbon, which offers vanilla and toffee notes. There's a little kiss of fruity sweetness in there as well.

The taste is more barleywine-forward, but I still might have pegged it for a blend if tasting it blind. There's a bit of dark fruit, caramel and alcohol. Slight chocolate in the aftertaste, as well as just a touch of hop bitterness and some lingering fig sweetness.

Silky, smooth and relatively light feel with just enough carbonation.

This is a good beer, but, overall, it comes across a bit thin in both the taste, IMO. Maybe my expectations were unfairly high, but I greatly preferred Brewery Maker.

Go Birds.

Many thanks to @lordofthewiens for getting this outstanding recurring thread started! No comments to add on home/yard maintenance...takes away too much time from being in the mountains. Since I stayed home to watch some football rather than earn some turns I figured I can make a couple of submissions. These will come as I fully expect the Vikings to continue to keep the hopes of their fan-base alive by making the Super Bowl in their own house...only to suffer another crushing defeat. Having grown up in SD, I routinely witnessed first-hand how that organization continually found new ways to crush their fans' hope. I see this year as more of the same.

First out of the gate is Modern Times City of the Dead Nitro (stout with cocoa nibs, almonds, and sea salt). Following a vigorous pour, as directed on the can (and there's even a video on their twitter feed to demonstrate proper technique) it's truly a gorgeous brew. Only visual knock would be the minimal presence of lacing. Nose starts coffee forward with chocolate in tow, but achieves more balance as the beer warms. Taste is definitely dark chocolate forward, the almond and salt additives become perceptible on the finish. Mouthfeel is great, very smooth and creamy, but there's a bit of saltiness during the finish from the sea salt. It's a beer that I definitely enjoyed for my palate and preferences, and one of which I'm quite happy there's several more in my fridge. Overall rating link, BA score = 4.25, rdev +6.8%

Summary: Aromas of hay, grass, earthy pine, light citrus, coriander, baked bread, Belgian yeast and a touch of smokiness came together to lead the flavor with the sweetness but wanted to delve into the smoke. Did it? To me, not really, but I wasn't worried. Grassy, hay and semi-piney in the aftertaste. It sat between light and medium bodied. Fairly sessionable. Carbonation felt good. ABV felt appropriate. I'd have again.

Good Afternoon NBSers beautiful day here in sunny 70 degree SC. Last night the window regulator broke on the truck so this morning got up and fixed that now time for a refreshing new beer from Trimtab Brewing in Alamaba, this is a Raspberry Berliner Weisse. Very tasty light easy drinking brew that I will enjoy out on the deck in the sun.

Appearance 3.75 - Pours semi transparent looks like dark tea. Light pink colored head settles to a 1/2" cap. No lacing.

Aroma 4 - light raspberry, tart lemon, picking up another fruit I cannot quite put my finger on.

Taste 4.25 - Lots of fresh raspberry up front along with lemon zest. Very light tartness.

Feel 4 - Light tart and refreshing at the same time super easy drinking.

Overall 4.09 - A really well done Berliner the raspberry is light slight tartness but very easy drinking and refreshing.

A: Beer pours a cloudy golden yellow like body with an ample amount of fluffy white head. Lots of lacing stays behind while drinking.

S: First amoras are of a piney like dankness. The tropical fruit smells are present too but take a backseat to the pine aromas.

T: The tastes of the beer are almost the exact opposite of the beer's nose. Mango and other tropical flavors are noticeable. The dank bitterness is there but mixes well with the tropical flavors.

M: Beer had a medium mouthfeel. The bitterness is present but not in a bad way. The carbonation is apparent on this beer.

O: This beer seems to juggle what style it is. The tropical notes are present as well as the pine like dankness. Nice brew overall.

Here's a double dose of Von Trapp Trosten Lager, a smoked black lager.

And it's a beaut of a beer. Mildly smoked, and well incorporated with the malts and allows them to shine. Woven in there are cocoa powder, dried fruits (figs, mostly), dark caramel, pumpernickel, and a touch of spice cake. The finish is moderately sweet, with just enough clean bitterness to keep it all in check, and a milky smooth mouthfeel. The balance is impeccable and there are no rough edges anywhere, yet it manages to pop with vibrancy anyway. I look forward to seeing how this develops as I work through a few bottles, but for now I have it on the border of A-/A (4.3). Another fantastic job by Von Trapp!

Enjoy your Sundays, BA!

Nice foamy beige head, bubbly lacing over clear but hazy golden beer. Nose bursts sweet citrus just prior to a sweet malt snd spicy hop finish. Taste isn’t exactly wickedly diverse, nor does it really do much different than your typical non-NE East Coast IPA, which is to say bold upfront bitterness followed by something citrus (in this case primarily orange peel), bitter assistsnce ptovided by an earthy element, and a moderate malt sweetness. Alcohol is very well hidden on this, as it could pass for a non-double easily. Somewhat dry on a lingering bitter aftertaste finish.

Sitting in my home, relaxing with my wife, watching the New England Patriots. Love my home, the amenities, the locale. At this stage in my life, I like being close to neighbors but not too close ( rental close). [IMG][/IMG] =https://postimg.org/image/rnmt9z3l7/][IMG]

The New England Patiots deserve a New England IPA. My new beer Sunday selection is Doppelganger from Treehouse.

Canned 1.16.18
Poured 1.21.18
“Nobody puts Sam in the corner!”

Poured into a treehouse teku glass

Hazy amber orange, plenty of carbonation , one finger off white foam cap, settles to frothy layer with good lacings

Aroma of tropical fruits , mango, papaya, peach

Tropical hop taste, follows the nose...

Hop taste, no bite, medium sudsing

Excellent beer

Go Pats or go home!

The last beer went down wayyy to easy, next up is Sierra Nevada Hop Bullet let me start by saying I do like this beer but it seems a little watered down in the taste. I know I still gave it a 4.25 for taste because I really do like the taste to me it is like a session DIPA if that exists!!!!

Appearance 4 - Pours clear golden color with dense white head that dissipates to a rocky white cap. Spotty lacing all around the glass.

Aroma 4 - Light floral hops, orange peel, grapefruit, caramel, light malt, mild grassy aroma.

Taste 4.25 - Taste is little weak for a DIPA, almost seems like a session DIPA. Light orange, tangerine, grapefruit. I like the taste very much just seems a little watered down.

Feel 4 - medium bodied well carbonated just a slightly dry finish.

Overall 4.1 - Very easy drinking I really do like this beer it is just a little watered down.

Good afternoon NBS!

Used to own a house, currently in the process of selling it as we had to move for job opportunities. Great few years, but I'll be honest, I've kind of enjoyed the last year of living in a townhouse. Nice to be able to just pull up a website and put in a maintenance request when something goes wrong. On the other hand, we've found ourselves checking out how the market is in the local area and feeling the pull of home ownership again. Dreams of sitting in the shade, enjoying a cold beer after yard work.

In the meantime, a cold beer while watching the Jags take the lead over the Pats. Today it's Basic City's Opera DIPA.

I'll be blunt, they are up and coming. Only a year old but it feels like they are starting to find their groove. The brewery itself is becoming popular to visit. Got the chance to talk to the owner for a while at a tasting, genuinely nice guy and it was nice to get to talk to him and learn about his brewing tastes and how they have been taking the time to research and learn what they're making.

Pours a cloudy dark yellow color with a thick, white head about three fingers wide that clings nicely to the glass on the way down. Smells of grapefruit pith, tangerines, and dank. Taste is a little bitter at first, fades to a nice level of bitterness. Oranges, a hint of pine, hint of pink grapefruit. Soft, medium body, with a slight lingering bitterness and citrus note. Very nice NEIPA, solid, easy to drink, citrus flavors but not a total juice bomb. Good stuff.

Talking of the "Joys" of Home Ownership. I am currently making two mortgage payments, so I am basically of the mindset its for the birds. That will change as soon as I sell out house up in Oklahoma. Just dropped the price another $10K, so I am hoping/praying that does the trick.

First Beer: Lagunitas Sumpin Easy PA. Not bad, but had much higher hopes

3.68 overall
Pours an effervescent gold with 2+ fingers of eggshell colored head. Sheets of lacing with good head retention

S: Orange, grassyness & a little breadyness

T: A little orangey, a little dry, some grassyness up front, Dryness & orange as this warms, more grassyness. Finishes dry, crisp with a little lime & stronger orange

MF: Light bodied. crisp carbonation, good balance

Easy drinker, but a little more restrained than I like. This maybe the first 12 pack from Lagunitas that I am little remorseful about. This would probably be more appreciatted in the heat of summer

A second new beer with the game on - Funky Buddha’s “I’m So Excited, I’m So Scared”, Imperial Coffee Stout. A 10% ABV Imperial Stout with Coffee and Vanilla added:

Pours black (55 degrees) w/ruby edges; creamy smooth dark tan cap with good retention; moderate heavy lacing; lite legs upon swirl. 4.5

Strong coffee nose, chocolate and vanilla. 4.25

Chocolate, coffee, bitter roast coffee beans; oak and vanilla a afterthought; bittersweet dark chocolate with cocoa nibs finish; the fudge base familiar in many of FB’s porters and stouts, again, constitutes the finish. 4.5

Medium full body, moderate carbonation; almost chewy - a really nice feel - not thick or gooey but a nice creamy feel for a “light” feeling stout (the vanilla addition?); dry cocoa powder tongue coating. 4.25

Overall, I’m pleased that this beer is not tasting or feeling overly adjuncty; yes, the fudgy base I find in most of FB’s porters/stouts is there, and the cocoa flavoring stands on top of the coffee; nevertheless, this is a coffee stout, is fine tasting, leaning more sweet malt than bitter roast. 4.25

12oz bottled 12/15/17 poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 6.2% ABV. The beer pours mostly bright golden straw yellow with sticky off white head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves modest lacing. The aroma is faint with generic citrus and floral hops. The taste is more of the same with a very light caramel presence, a touch of grapefruit and floral flavors and an almost pilsner like dry lightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied, adequately carbonated and dry. Overall, very good and well made beer. It's pleasant without any particular point being outstanding. I'll enjoy the other two from the mix pack.

Happy Birthday!
