While browsing Sierra Nevada's website today to see if they still made Nooner Pilsner (a favorite I never see anymore) I noticed they listed their Sidecar as an Orange IPA instead of Pale Ale. The ABV has changed to 6.8%, up from the 5.3% that I still see on shelves, and it received a new label as well.

Now, I am not surprised that the Sidecar Pale Ale is going away. Pale Ales just don't sell that well in general anymore, and I didn't see this as an improvement of their classic Pale Ale. But, I AM surprised they just switched it to another IPA. With the Tropical Torpedo sticking around, and just recently adding the new Hazy Little Thing IPA to their lineup which already consisted of Hop Hunter and the standard Torpedo it seems like they are just competing with themselves for shelf space.

One of these 4 will inevitably not make the cut in the long run (and hopefully that reopens a spot on the shelf for Nooner). Which one, if any, do you think it will be?

Sounds like one too many Pale Ales and IPAs in their portfolio.

Meh, it's what they are known for and they seem to do well in the space. Plus they've lowered their prices in Ohio and Kentucky. I think they'll be just fine.

I really am not a fan of Tropical Torpedo. I didn't care much for the Sidecar as a Pale Ale either.

I really hope they don't ditch Hop Hunter.

Sierra Nevada, please put Hop Hunter in cans and I'll make that my weekly buy over Torpedo.

So, the only reason you're not buying it every week is because it's not in cans? Not sure I understand your reasoning.

Permit me to create a hypothetical discussion:

Boss: Our sales were down on 2016. We need to get our sales up.
Marketing Guy: Well, the market research indicates that craft beer drinkers really like IPAs.
Boss: OK, add more IPAs to our portfolio. We need our sales to increase.

It sure appears that for Stone Brewing who increased their portfolio last your with more hoppy beers (e.g., IPAs) that this improved their sales numbers in 2017. Maybe this will help Sierra Nevada in 2018?

    Cheers!

I had the Sidecar PA and thought it was OK. Happened to come across this at a bar, but wasn't necessarily seeking this out. The Sidecar IPA - ya, I'll seek this one out.

I will be interested to try the 6.8% recipe to see if it improved.

I just bought a fresh nooner 12 pack of cans from TW last week, so they are definitely still out there.

I just want some fresh Kellerweis this year and I'll be happy.

Somewhat ironic you should mention this. This past weekend while grocery shopping I saw a 6-pack of Kellerwiess. I took one bottle out of that pack to see that it was bottled mid-October 2017 so it is about 3+ months old right now. Is that "fresh" by your standards?

    Cheers!

P.S It was sitting on a shelf (room temperature) just so you know.

Yes. Fresh enough for me. I typically see it at 6+ months old. I'll hold out hope.

I actually considered buying it but since it was stored non-refrigerated I was uncertain how fresh this beer would taste. It has been my experience in general that the Hefeweizen beer style is a very sensitive (to age effects) beer style so a Hefeweizen that is 90+ days old not stored cool/cold was older than I was willing to gamble on. If I was convinced that this 6-pack was continuously stored cool/cold I would not have thought twice about buying it.

    Cheers!

I would have bought the 3+months old Kellerweiss. The SN Stout I saw recently was about the same age. The hope is that it will then be replaced by a fresher dated 6pack sometime - and the store will hopefully keep ordering it.

I would have no problem buying a SN Stout that was 3-ish months old. Dark malts provide anti-oxidation properties and greatly aid beer stability.

A Hefeweizen is notably different in the beer stability regard as compared to a Stout.

    Cheers!

I buy SNPA/Torpedo every week...in cans. I recycle. The CRV deposit is the same for cans as it is for bottles. You get more per lb of aluminum on the backend.

If they put Hop Hunter in cans, that would be my weekly purchase.

Yep, Sidecar wasn't doing well so they reformulated it as an IPA. They are going to be including it in their summer variety pack and that pack looks great so I will probably get to try it then.

@JackHorzempa I have had 3 month old Kellerweiss and it was still decent but I know what you mean.

I wish SN did more Lagers because the ones they do I usually enjoy quite a bit. I see why they keep aiming for the IPA market but does their lineup really taste all that different? Solid beers but I taste similarities between many.

Well, one of the new IPAs is Hazy in appearance. Is that different enough for you?

    Cheers!

Unfortunately, that one is not that different from any other west cost IPA. On the other hand, the hop bullet DIPA is really good.

So, are you expecting that Hop Bullet will be a better selling beer vs. Hazy Little Things IPA?

    Cheers!
