Occasionally before my night shifts. 100% of the time once my shift starts. But I can sleep on my shift and don't really have to do any work until the next morning, so I have a couple beers with dinner.

I'm sure I have some of the details and terminology wrong, and it's not my story but here goes. In the early seventies, my girlfriend's father worked at the Merrimack Anheuser Busch brewery. Apparently in those days they were allowed to drink on the job. During his shift part of his responsibility was to either open a valve or make an adjustment, temperature, something to the tanks at certain time intervals. On some floors were Budweiser,on others Michelob. On this particular day he got carried away with his libations and got off on the wrong floor, and made the adjustment for Budweiser mistakenly to the tanks of Michelob.
The next day he was called into the office. The result was thousands of gallons of Michelob ruined. Ultimately he kept his job with nothing more than a warning to ease back on the drinking and they were able to turn the Michelob into a the next batch of Budweiser.

I only drink one thing BEFORE work: Coffee.

During and after: Anything goes (I work in a bottle-o ATM - sometimes have tastings to taste).

Nope. For many years I have been responsible for lives other than my own.

If I worked in a cube farm, I might consider it, but I work directly with people/customers, so morning beers during the week are never happening.

Now the weekends are a different story with footie starting so early and all.

No...if I drink before work, then I'm not working. It's that simple.

Work makes beer a reward at the end of the day. Beer makes work a reward at the end of the week.

Very much depends. Most of my day too day work is climbing ladders, working with heavy objects overhead, and electricity, so I don't drink before any of that. Other times my work includes social activities, or is purely artistic, in those cases it's not too big of a deal in moderation, but safety is always first and jeopardizing it for a beer isn't worth it.

Never, its not professional and in my opinion indicates a alcohol problem.

I would argue that say a breakfast and nightcap beer would most likely be less indicative of a problem than 3+/night.

I concur. It's a problem when drinking infringes on life commitments, including work, parenting, financial responsibility, and relationships. For many years, while the kids were 5-18 I rarely drank because my job as parent was to be called upon with no notice for rides, car breakdowns, accidents, illness, etc.

The OP was asking if people consumed before going to work, not how many beers you drink?

In my small town, I have to drive to get anywhere and that include work. So nope, but even if on weekend or vacation its the same. I don't feel like drinking before 11am, and choose coffee and orange juice instead.

Not to mention that I wouldn't want to have the ethanol bad breath working and therefore have a bad reputation.

And the award for Thread Resurrection of The Year goes to...

My answer is no. I also don't drink during work functions that serve alcohol (as few as there are) or at a business dinner unless it is completely casual with someone I trust (which amounts to never - I can count the people I trust on two fingers). Any work functions I let everybody else drink, I keep my mouth shut, and I listen...especially when it's senior management folk doing the drinkin'...

NO, it just isn't a good idea. I suppose if you are self employed and work around the house/shop, it would be no big deal..

I work in the beer industry more than two decades now and my simple answer is no, never. Not before, not during, not ever. There’s a fine line between drinking to enjoy it and drinking because you “have to.”

Once I’m in the comfort of my own home and have nothing to do and I’ve worked a long, hard day (which is often) then...hell yeah. Haha, basically goes the same for my days OFF. Get your shit done, then you’ve earned it.
