It sounds like you had a bottle that was plagued with diacetyl. I would assume that this is not the norm for this beer.

Yeah, Thomas Creek isn't exactly Tree House, but that Bull Sluice Quad is decent. Can't all be zingers. There is so much mediocre breweries in SC. Swamp Cabbage, Rusty Bull, Free House, just insert any 2 word name and boom crapola.

Now Seminar on the other hand....

Curious as to your thoughts. If we're talking barrel Aged American-made Quads, Dark Sovereign is up here with the best of them that I've had.

That's why my friends and I like to just call them all "big Belgians" and not split hairs.

Boulevard--The Sixth Glass--Very tasty. An American classic "take" on the style. Admittedly, however, some Quad "purists" will (rightfully) find it too hoppy and spicy.

So--if you want an excellent American "take" that is more true to the style--track down "Ten" by Funkwerks. An excellent brew.

Another interesting question is: when/how does a new style emerge and is quad an example?

You won't find any since the Quads/BSDAs brewed in Belgium almost exclusively use noble hops and there are no American Hops involved.

Aren't Quadrupels dark red, brown, dark brown and/or muddy brown? And BSDA are black? I don't think they should be lumped together. Two different looking and tasting styles.

No, BSDAs are not black. They generally have the same range of colors as do Quads.

Quads are a form of BSDAs (certainly in Belgium) and the real issue is whether they also do or do not represent an emerging new style.

Sorry, but I disagree. From my own experience. And what "new style" are you talking about?

Colors: Try reading the descriptions on here of BSDAs and Quads given by other reviewers, etc, the range of colors is pretty much identical and that matches my experience with them.

Similarly, from the site's Quad's description, "Typically a dark creation that ranges within the deep red, brown and garnet hues."

What beer are you thinking of that is Black?

Emerging style: Quad is not recognized in Belgium as a style to be differentiated from BSDAs. This is a thing created by the American beer culture and even there not everyone accepts that there is a distinction. Thus Quads are an emerging style in the sense that there is yet a not strong agreement on their differences.

Was the name Quad influenced by La Trappe coming out with theirs or was La Trappe influenced by Americans' use of the term Quad?
