Look at Pale Ales for an introduction . Sierra Nevada makes a good one thats widely distributed. Also look for low alcohol beers like Founders All Day. Either of these have hops but the bitterness is fairly low. Many of the higher rated IPA's are pretty strong, both in bitterness and alcohol %. Also, even a die hard hop head is occasionally not in the mood for the bitterness. So don't be too disappointed if have an off day.

I'll second (or third) the recommendation for Sierra Nevada's Hazy Little Thing. I don't know how it compares to what you're drinking now, but I do know that it's delicious, cheap, and widely available, and the bitterness is quite understated.

    Good luck!

    Thanks everyone.

I'm not quite sure what I liked about YR. I've read reviews of lots of beers here and it amazes me that y'all taste so many different notes and flavors. My taste buds are probably ruined from all the other stuff I've had. I take that back - I did taste orange in the wheats I've tried, and what I thought I remembered most when trying IPAs in the past was a grapefruity bite that I didn't care much for.

I'm bummed that Total was out of Hazy Little Thing. In fact, many mentioned here were either not carried, or sold out. I ended with a sampler 6 pack of different ones to try:

    Elisss IPA - Saint Arnold
New England IPA - Epic Brewing
High In The Hill - Oasis Texas Brewing CO
Mosaic IPA - Community Beer CO.
Hop Knot IPA - Four Peaks
Easy Peasy IPA - Deep Ellum Brewing CO

I'll keep looking for the others mentioned, plus I appreciate more advice and suggestions as well. Y'all are awesome! Thanks tons.

I second the suggestion for Two Hearted. Yellow Rose is a little smoother, to me, than Two Hearted. Both are great beers. If YR were available in Michigan I'd be buying it.

    Fantastic!

Enjoy them all and pay attention to differences. You'll be surprised how soon your taste buds start adjusting to things, bitterness included. I'd swear the key for me over the years has been doing the reviews -- you can do them if you like, but reviewing is not essential. What has been essential for me is taking the time to think about what I'm smelling/tasting/experiencing. Sounds like that's your plan, so good for you!

I have to second the recommendation on Bell's Two Hearted. It can be pretty bitter fresh then smooths out into a sweeter beer over time, but it's certainly worth buying.

Also I forgot to mention Spindletap's Hop Gusher. It's tasty.

Not sure what part of Texas you are in, but Austin has pinthouse pizza. When I lived there they were doing lots of juicy, low bitterness ipas. And I hear Houston has a lot of newer breweries putting out fantastic neipas. If those aren't an option, just stick to YR and and be a happy man, I miss that beer so much.

I'm in Dallas. Tonight I went back to my fav craft beer place and had a few more YR. The girl told me they just tapped another keg. =-) I'm sure I'll be back in a few days to get my fix. ;-)

Thanks everyone, and keep em coming.

I've been sampling Founders Mosaic Promise on tap at work a lot lately, and it surprised me with how not bitter it is.

I've only had one Yellow Rose and it was damn good. looking around a bit it would appear that what I had was 100 % Moasic hops. So do a bit of research, there's quite a few options I'm sure, Moasic is very popular. If worse comes to worse you could look for beers like Double Simcoe from Weyerbacher if it's available, Simcoe and Moasic are kissing cousins.

@robncatk One beer at a time!

I find it very balanced, which leaves a less bitter aftertaste to me.

& do check the dates. I've known plenty that swore off IPAs, and even non-AALs entirely, because of a bad one or two. Guessing from their descriptions that what they got were old ones. Very old. The singles section is the destination for old beer, at many (most?) retailers. An old-ish one isn't necessarily bad, and can be worth trying, but just be aware of that , in case it's ......less-than-the-best. I.e. , don't write-off that beer without giving it another chance, with a fresher specimen. Good luck on your quest. :beers:

Since you are in Dallas area, look for Roughtail - Everything Rhymes with Orange. Easy drinking IPA, very fruity and low bitterness. No fruit added, just hops. I have seen it in Denton at Midway Crafthouse or Midway Mart

Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA is a good introductory IPA. It was the first IPA that I actually liked...not very bitter at all.

As mentioned above by others...I'd also recommend trying Sierra Nevada Hazy Little Thing IPA.

I'd echo some other posters: Mosaic is a great, gentle, fruity hop that is very accessible and increasingly widely available. I actually had Founders Mosaic Promise on tap in San Antonio recently and would definitely recommend.

I'm going to look for Hazy Little Thing elsewhere today. Possibly Roughtail and
    a few others.

Ok, I sampled 4 last night and I noticed I didnt drink those as fast as I would, say a Corona or Shiner. Maybe I'm just not used to the taste, or it's made to not chug as quickly. Maybe a bit of both.

Anyways, I started with Easy Peasy. Seemed a little watered down from what I remembered. Taste wasn't bad but I wanted a something more. I asked myself if I'd buy it again and my answer was probably not. 2nd was the Hop Knot. I didn't really like this one much, but sipped it until it was gone. Not terrible, it was full of flavor but not the ones I like. I won't buy that one again. Next was the Metamodern Session IPA, which I originally thought was called High In The Hill because of the back of the purple can. Winner, I enjoyed this one. Wish the abv was higher but that's about what I've been drinking these years sooo... I drank a Shiner Bock quickly to cleanse my palate. Next was Mosiac by Community. I liked it but will have to try it again to be more sure, I was a little buzzed by the time I got to it. Tonight I'll give the Elissa and New England one a go.

I'm excited, there are so many options when it comes to IPAs and it seems like something you can't really get bored with. The possibilities seem endless.

I appreciate the wonderful feedback from everyone. I would love to see even more suggestions so keep em coming! =-)
