It’s hard not to wonder if anyone has a clue what they are doing over there. You can practically see the wheels turning— “what if we make the same quantity, but sell it direct to consumer so we can keep all that extra profit!”

Of course, the idea that the demand will be unchanged is absurd. Not to mention the fact that they will now be sinking some of their valuable space into storage for all the leftover bottles they’re going to have after the 14th.

I agree that this is eventually going to end up in distribution when Perrin realizes they don’t want to warehouse a bunch of unsold beer.

After cellaring some 12oz batch 1, bombers of b1,2 and 3, I've learned this beer is the same mess no matter how long its been aged or what batch it is. I like the beer, but its no masterpiece.

They'll cave when they realize how many people don't want to go to Comstock park to pick it up. Look at BBPt5 this year, mountains of cases showing up at accounts.

Definitely still bottles sitting around collecting dust in SW Ohio.

This epitomizes what I hate the most about the craft consumer.

"This is bullshit bro! I can't maximize my trade value or profit, bro! I can't even taste the rare anymore, bro!!'

Another example is Black Note...I recall it selling out in a couple days...didn't it last multiple weekends this year? We got a lot in distro here in Central Illinois this year vs. limit 1 bottle per person two/three years ago.

I have both enjoyed and disliked this beer, age definitely does not improve it. As I said, people are fatigued, their wallets are crushed. Big BBA beers are so last year, or 2016. The growth of the craft beer industry across the country has ensured that there is a Perrin or some other hype factory just a town over that is selling a BBA beer. Why bother trading for it if what you have in your backyard is just as good or better. No need to buy extras for trading anymore, no need to hoard, the aftermarket on many of these beers is dead. Look at Black Note, KBS, BBAPt5...

As a retailer, I'm left wondering where my motivation is to push to move their core line up as well as the weird bombers they continue to put out. Damsel in Distress took FOREVER to move off the shelf and Black and Gold sit so long they come close to going back to the distributor. I have their beers in a great location in the store in hopes of moving more to get a better NR allocation. All of that has been called in to question.

I also think its total bullshit to say they are concerned about people having a hard time finding NR in the stores....so folks on the east side who want the beer now have to go to GR or jump through hoops with trades or mules. They just want KBS tier hype and are painting themselves into a corner by doing this. So when there is a ton of bottles left at the brewery and they do send some to distro they are again going to piss off people who went to GR to get bottles.

I dont really see the difference between this and Pipeworks with thier soft releases. The beer from this company has never seen a lot of hype. If anything, even if its bad, gaining negitive press is building more attention to their beer. They just started shipping bottles to chicago not too long ago including NR with Unfinnished Buisness (of which sat on shelves for a while with no purchase limits). I think they want the attention of Epic or Goose and have more controle of profit.

All in all, seems sorta surprising to see how strong of a reaction this is getting.

I no joke bought a 2017 No Rules at Meijer yesterday. And no, I don’t mean the gift pack. There is absolutely no way they will sell even a fraction of bottles that they have in years past with distribution.

I have local friends who really enjoy No Rules but, they are not the die hards that would drive to a brewery on the other side of the state for a bottle release. This is the exact demographic that Perrin will cut out of their sales. This seems to me like the opposite of what a brewery should be trying to do. Let’s “Protect the brand” by cutting out the average consumer and try to sell this over priced product to a fraction of the market. Sounds like a terrible decision.

I'm confused by this. Pipeworks never (or hardly ever) advertises when they have their BA bottles available. It's all word of mouth - no FB events, IG posts, etc. And then they keep them all at the Dojo now and don't send to retail (as far as I know). I think in PW's case, the retailers are well aware that PW doesn't have the scale to send all the BA beers to them in decent quantity, so they keep them all in house now. It seems very different to me, but maybe I'm not looking at it the right way.

I would have liked the spokeswoman to detail what exactly the No Rules 'brand' is. Apparently selling the beer only at the brewery 'protects' it, but what is the brand?

But the people that picked it up in GR got to tick it in Untappd sooner.

Agreed. I live in Kzoo & went to the release last year only because my daughter had a lacrosse tourney in GR and only after going to the Sensual Bean release. I only waited a little bit because I went in early afternoon but I didn't care that it was distributed. If it won't be distributed then I probably won't get any because that beer isn't worth an hour drive to me even though I like it. Too many options available for less work

Guess the way I was seeing it was all of PW special/ba beer releases were shipped to stores. They contructed thier bottle shop, stopped shipping those same ba beers, and increased volume of beer production and sale location of flagship beers while keeping ba beers as soft releases @ the Dojo. This however was looked at positivly by the comunity.

Point I was getting at was I thought it seemed similar of a practice but wasn't. My bad. :slight_frown:

1st off, this beer was so disappointing I feel bad for anyone who lines up for it. It was nice to be able to grab one in Chicago last month, but I won't be reaching for it again.

That is the silliest excuse I have heard. We have people camping out for 3 days just to get BCBS variants which we all know will hit stores. I would love it if Goose decided to pull all the variants back to Chicago to protect the brand! I smell a write in campaign! The whole point of a structured release is to increase your chance of scoring a bottle in an unknown market. Next year they should forgo the release and just give every store in America 1 bottle to sell. When people bitch about how hard it is to find remind them they didn't want to line-up at a release.....

For a beer called No Rules, why is the brewery creating all of theses rules to purchase?

I just saw black note sitting in a cooler last week still. About 5 miles from the general store.

I love No Rules. And if more porters were like it I would drink/try a lot more of them. But I still wouldn't go out of my way to get it.

And as far as still being able to find it, I know where I'm at in Indiana, it sat for months before selling in '16 and then the places didn't even bother to get '17...
