Just heard that this years batch has been pasturized, therefore cannot be cellared. Thoughts?

CAN be cellared. As mentioned in previous discussions, pasteurization kills microorganisms by quickly heating the liquid to a specific temperature, then quickly cooling.

Oxidation reaction, reduction, replacement reactions, which help in "aging" the beer, all still happen without the help of microbes, free of spoilage.

    Can't really say she's a troll.

BTW - BCBS was pasteurized last year too.

For the most part I'm done with BCBS anyway. Then again, maybe I won't have so many bad bottles with pasteurization. Maaaayyybeeee, I'll buy a single.

    But I doubt it.

My safeway across the street still has bottles fro $8.99. Might have to go pick up some more after this discussion.

Well, the brewery would disagree I suppose as it explicitly states on the label tag, "Develops In The Bottle Up To 5 Years". YMMV

The post above me says all you need to know.

Read the label on the bottle.

Meh, there's better options for the same price or even less.

Wow, that's great, and you live in a state where you can get even better options for the same price or less. Wish that was true here.

OK - false presumption on my part, but I expect that most on here who fly the "?" flag are women feeling they might be hit on or discredited if they list their gender. Backfires though since folks presume anyway.

As far as folks calling you out as troll, we have had quite a number of users register, leave a question to provoke heated discussion, then stand back and watch the ensuing fun. Probably worthwhile to search forums before posting, as most topics have already been discussed ad nauseum.

    Welcome!

If done correctly, pasteurization stops growth. But - it doesn't restore already infected beer, so it will still taste bad. They need to test for infection, dump infected beer, then pasteurize the good stuff. If you have personally gotten infected BCBS, can't blame you. If you haven't, but are reacting to the situation in general, you're missing out. But there are similar or better beers.

That's what popped into my head, with all the GI talk it looked suspicious.

Some of the "good" oxidation that I fancy?
Yep, I do hope for some of that in my 2 remaining bottles .Lol .

I completely understand there are no "restorative" qualities to pasteurization. Believe me. However, I felt burned more than once in the years while GI was expanding production of BCBS. And for somebody like me who has been enjoying the evolution of this great world of beer for over 30 years, I don't feel any loyalty to that brand AND there's just so many amazing options out there. I spend my money elsewhere. Happily.

I recently drank my last 2017 Surly BA Darkness, and I'd have to say that it was much better than the last few BCBS's I've had, and better than CBS. The other day 2018 BA Darkness came out, and I had to stock up.
