Happy NBS! I'm taking it easy today. It has snowed for 10 straight days now. Looks like that will finally end tomorrow. I'm making some chili and will take my 3 dogs for a walk a bit later.

Enjoying this Bozo Beer. It pours coffee black with a very nice, dense dark tan, 1.5 finger head. The cap fades slowly into a collar and beautiful webbed lacing clings to my glass. Very nice aroma of coffee, cinnamon, vanilla, roasted malt, chilies and dark chocolate. Flavor is a all over with the cinnamon and chilies adding depth to all the coffee, vanilla, cocoa, molasses,
and chocolate notes. It is not too bold nor spicy for me. A very smooth, sublime, medium mouth feel with soft carbonation. I really don't notice the 17% ABV until the can is finished. This ended up being quite flavorful.

Good afternoon BAs thanks to @cjgiant for the wonderful start. I have had only one issue shipping beer, a friend actually shipped me some beer from Michigan. I do not recall the name of the beer but it was a maple blueberry stout, he did not package it well and I got a call from Fedex to come pick up a package. I show up the guy brings me a box with all but 2 bottles that I was expecting and said "Tell your buddy to pack that beer better, the whole damn truck smelled like blueberry pancakes when they opened it up". They even repacked it for me so I thought that was pretty cool.

Anyway my first new beer is from Aslin and the last of what a friend picked up and may be the best. It is a Berliner Weisse brewed with Boysenberries, Blueberries and Blackberries clocking in at 3.5%. This thing is great wonderful aroma great flavors only complaint is I only had one can!!!

Appearance 4.5 - pours murky beet colored deep red with nice pink head that settles to a thin film. Spotty lacing all around the glass.

Aroma 4.5 - Man this thing has a ton of dark berry aroma. The blackberries, blueberries and boysenberries all work well together to give this a sweet, tart tangy aroma. Slight vinegar aroma in there as well.

Taste 4.5 - I pick up the blueberries and blackberries for sure I am not sure I have had a boysenberry so it could be there as well. Nice tart and sweet taste right up front then it swings to a slightly tangy almost earthy flavor. It is almost like drinking a glass of juice.

Feel 4.25 - Light and prickly at first but a slight syrupy feel is left behind.

Overall 4.48 - I really like this one, the flavors are great just the right mix of sweet and tart.

A: Beer pours a solid black body into glass. It looked almost like motor oil coming from the bottle. The beer had a slight mocha looking head. Head fades away leaving minimal lacing behind.

S: Beer has a heavy amount of oak aromas. Also noticing some maple like sweetness. However, the oak notes overpower the other notes coming from the beer.

T: Brandy becomes more evident in this area. Lots of dried fruits and oak flavors are present. Along with the brandy related flavors, maple is also noticeable in the beer. The maple adds a nice sweetness to the brandy flavors.

M: The beer has a somewhat thin mouthfeel with a light to medium body. Not much carbonation but the beer drinks smoothly.

O: The brandy adds nicely to the maple flavors. Didn't get much brandy aromas but brandy is upfront on the tastes. Would have liked to have seen the beer have a thicker mouthfeel. Overall, a nice beer that benefits from the brandy aging.

Ugh. I'm near the end of this experiment. A reminder of what I'm up against:

First up is Viking Lager, a Pale Euro Lager on this site.

Well, Pale Euro Lager or American Adjunct Lager, it tastes about the same. There's a reasonable balance for most of the experience. Rated to style, it's a better beer than many in its category, but it's not something I particularly enjoyed.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/4748/30578/?ba=Roguer#review
    3.15 / +15.8%

Moving on, then, to Viking Classic, a sub-5% Vienna Lager.

It certainly has some caramel in the malt bill, and it shows in the glass, on the nose, and on the palate - but just barely. I don't think it's a great example of the style, although my experience is admittedly limited. If it could carry the balanced flavor of the front through to the finish, it would be, if not exactly pleasant, at the very least palatable.

Of the five Viking beers I've had the pleasure (?) of trying, this is the only one with a weighted rating over 3.00 - and it's the only one I reviewed today where my rDev is +.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/4748/134744/?ba=Roguer#review
    2.95 / -6.1%

Finally, then, we come to Viking Gylltur, the only brew of the entire pack described here as an AAL. It is also the only brew I sampled today clocking in above 5% ABV.

Well - no surprises here: pale malt dominant. Unlike the others, this one lacked a balanced nose, and was really uninviting from the word go. The extra % did nothing to help the flavor. It's also worth noting that, of the five brews from the Viking sample pack (only three today; you didn't lose count), Gylltur was my second lowest rated, and yet still came out with a +rDev. That should give you a good idea of the kind of beer we're talking about here.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/4748/17296/?ba=Roguer#review
    2.86 / +3.6%

A unifying theme for these Viking beers - and something they share in common with typical BMC-style AALs - is an aftertaste that ruins any good will established up front. Most of them look good, and some have a pleasant, balanced, inviting nose, but all have a malty, sickly-sweet aftertaste that is simply ruinous.

If I were at a HHH run, or a typical picnic, none of these would be the worst beers around. I would certainly grab the Lager before going with one of America's Big Three, as well as the Classic.

I also could finish literally zero of them. I think my entire body is rebelling. I need a reward after this.

I'd close with my typical "Cheers!" but please don't toast this effort.

Great post and I love the stylized photos. You might get a kick out of the story behind the name of this beer.

There's a roadway in Boston called Storrow Drive that has a number of unusually low elevation bridges crossing over it. Given that this roadway runs parallel to Boston University (and close to any number of others as well) it is a yearly ritual for students in rented moving trucks to not heed the signs and clip the top of their vehicles on one of the bridges and sometimes even get stuck.

Trillium made reference to this phenomenon with a pretty funny social media ad that a lot of people thought was real at first

Great Start! I have been traveling with beer for a good 25 plus years.
One of my most successful, albeit impossible now, was when my brother and I were flying to Vancouver from SoCal. A buddy of mine, formerly my Spanish teacher in Guatemala, had emigrated to Canada. He fell in love with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale while visiting me numerous times, so my brother and I decided to bring a case to him. Mind you, this was pre-Sept. 11th.
We were flying the now defunct Canadian Airlines. Damn I miss them. We brought the case of beer on as carry-on. We got quite a few looks, a few smiles, and a chuckle from the attendant that greeted us upon boarding. She smiled and said, "We don't see that everyday. I guess it's ok, as long as you don't open any." I actually loaded it into the overhead bins, and all was ok.

The whole crew was nothing but smiles and positivity. I sure love being in Canada.

Be back later with a brew or 2.

L - 3-finger light brown head atop a dark brown body.

S - very sweet. Sweet caramel, coffee, and chocolate.

T - So much caramel. Almost as sweet as a Southern Tier stout. Coffee provides some bitterness. Chocolate is buried in the artificial caramel attack.

F - medium body with prickly carb.

O - The artificial caramel stomps on all other flavors and throws this out of balance. Would like this more if the coffee and chocolate fought back equally.

One of the most satisfying things about this thread every Sunday is the fact that I get to see such a wide range of terrific looking beer with a mouth watering description of each that really speaks to my malt loving side.

So why is it that all I seem to drink are in the IPA family? I'm seriously due for things non-IPA...... just have to get on that maybe later because I've already lined up a few IPAs for today..... someone should ground me from hops.....

    Anyhoo.....

Sam from Other Half by The Veil is first up.

Had to force a bit of head on this but the result is quite seriously creamy, not massive, just thoroughly creamy with lacing equally full of life. Opaque body is somewhere between pale orange and dingy yellow. Nose is a bit quiet, nothing jumping right out but it allows for a softer aroma of earthy ripe vegetables to roll out just prior to a pretty well defined orange zest takes over. Taste is, as should be, the big star. Just enough bitter to get the tongue agitated enough to really appreciate the orange, maybe some lemon zest, and a subtle garlic finish while the whole time exists a solid malt backbone best described as sweet in a stand off-ish, biscuity way, but don't misunderstand - not malt forward. Finish is a touch alcohol hot, medium bodied but on the more syrupy side of medium with decent bitterness and some sweetness lingering on the tongue. Overall a very nice beer that is a bit of a departure from most of these things I've had. Unique without being contrived or off puttingly odd

    OK, I earned this reward:

    The Bruery Terreaux Sans Pagaie

Let's get right into it: the brewery claims this is their take on a Belgian Kriek lambic, but this is an American Wild Ale from start to finish. Intensely sour and tart, it has a pucker that lasts throughout the entire sip - and long after, I might add.

Flavor profile is complex and intensely fruity. While there is some impression of cherry pits and peel, there is a massive amount of other fruit tones I'm picking up on: raspberries, blueberries, peaches, kiwi, and star fruit, among others. Oak and vanilla add depth, in particular on the back third.

This won't take the place of any Belgian Kriek I might want, but instead really highlights what American brewers can bring to the table. It's complex, deep, fruity, incredibly sour, and definitely not a traditional lambic.

    Straight 4.0s across the board.

Another NBS and another beer from Twin Elephant with a silly name. The Goon Docks an Oatmeal Brown Ale with cinnamon that clocks in at 5.6% ABV. The Goon Docks is a very tasty brew It pour dark brown with a thick tan long lasting head. Both the aroma and the taste are malty, I did not pick up any cinnamon and neither did the other drinkers who tried this beer, The mouthfeel is very full but soft. The finish is dry. Overall a fine Brown Ale. No one drinking at the brewery seemed to care that there seemed to be no cinnamon flavor in the beer. asked the brewer about that and he said it was added during the boil and that he was just trying to get hints of it in the finished beer.
Brown Ales aren't a much talked about style but well made ones are a joy to drink. I'm glad Twin Elephant brews them not many small breweries seem to.

Done at the gym, cleaned the downstairs and I’m ready for a beer. This beer is from Heist Brewing in Charlotte and it’s called Not From Concentrate and it’s a 6.3 abv NEIPA. It’s hazy and turbulent maybe a tad darker in the glass than say Tired Hands beers. From the name I was expecting something a bit more towards copper or orange. Poured a thin bubbly head fairly thin at that. Nose is fruit, sweet fruit but I’m not getting any pineapple kind of hits like I got from Routine Culture also in Charlotte. Thin mouthfeel, prickly carbonation, but it’s nicely bitter fruit up front and it carries all the way thru to the finish. It’s definitely not an OJ bomb and it’s not a complete hammer on the bitter. Overall it’s a really good representative of the style, I’m enjoying the fact that it’s balanced but it’s leaning more to the hops side than the malt. I’d buy these Charlotte beers every day, but it’s a one way 2 hr drive so a once in a blue moon run.

Let me add the second glass the head tightened up significantly, this is obviously from a Crowlers which I'm not all that framiliar with. Maybe thst a vessel thing.
