The new Carton facility (sort of around the corner from the existing brewery) is being build on the footprint of what was a post-Repeal local distributor warehouse for NJ's Feigenspan Brewing Co. warehouse.
IIRC, the current Carton building was also associated with the Feigenspan distributorship, as well, according to @augiecarton

Feigenspan after Repeal was NJ's second largest brewing company until being purchased during WWII by next-door neighbor, P. Ballantine & Sons, which absorbed most of their existing buildings in Newark. (The family would continue to run it's subsidiary brewery, Dobler in Albany, NY, until the late 1950s).

The ad above also shows that the middle tier (which was optional in NJ even at the time) was set up much differently immediately after Repeal. All those listed distributors, for a brewery with a barrelage of only around 500k, covered only a small two county region of tiny NJ.

SingleSpeed Brewing's Waterloo, Iowa, operation is housed in a repurposed Hostess Bakery building. The brewery has preserved the exterior as well as much of the interior of the building, which has been a Waterloo landmark for decades. They also make some fantastic beer.

The Southerleigh Fine Foods and Brewery in San Antonio, Texas is in part of the old Pearl Brewery. Other parts have been converted into a luxury hotel and other restaurants and shops. Worth a visit.

Jopen in Haarlem, Netherlands comes to mind. Located inside a former church, often referred to as "Jopenkerk". One of the coolest breweries I've been to - and great beer as well!

Half Door Brewing Company is located in an old Victorian era house located in downtown San Diego and is like a block from Petco Park. They also crank out some of the best hoppy beers I've found in San Deigo and have awesome food. Definitely a must if you are ever in downtown SD.

Brimmer Beer Box in Tokyo is built out of an old shipping container. Definitely on my bucket list.

    Place is absolutely incredible...
Beers are great too and they had a nice mix of traditional styles along with new school stuff. Tried about a half dozen different beers there and they were really all quite tasty!

First instinct when I saw this thread... great location and facility. Beers are pretty tasty, but that roast beef sandwich is definitely something to write home about

While not nearly as glorious as some of these subs, Idol Beer Works in Lodi, CA (Idol=Lodi backwards) was an old tire change shop. They still have the roll up bay doors.

oh man, i feel like a complete moron. i've been on BA for a few years now, and this is the first time i've seen this thread. the reason i feel like a moron is that i'm actually doing my master's in historic preservation and studying breweries that have adaptively re-used old buildings and converted them into breweries. can't believe i've never seen this thread before. there are some great examples listed here. i've definitely seen some of the prominent examples in former churches and schools, etc. and there were a handful of old BA print magazine articles about breweries reusing old firehouses and other places that i used as source material.

my main case study is a local brewery in Gainesville, FL that just had their two year anniversary, Cypress & Grove. they converted a 100+ year old former ice plant/cold storage building that drew water from a well on the site to make giant blocks of ice: https://cypressandgrove.com/building-and-well/

if i weren't at work right now, i'd crack open a cold one and spend the rest of the morning pouring over this thread!

First Flight Brewery in Key West, formerly Kelly's (of Kelly McGillis fame) has an interesting past. It was the birthplace of Pan American World Airways. Of course, like many buildings in Old Town down there, it's stately and attractive; you can also drink in a lush tropical garden - I doubt you can say that of many U.S. breweries outside of possibly Hawaii.

Worth a visit, bite and maybe a beer just to check it out. The beer is highly unremarkable, but it is a cool place.
