I was wondering if anybody is brewing any clear IPA’s that are getting hyped at their releases. I’m not looking for beers that have been around and respected for a long time, but rather new release beers. I had a brief conversation with Denny Conn on a mutual friend’s Facebook page a few weeks ago and he mentioned Bale Breakers as being a brewery that brews heavily hopped, lowly bittered clear IPA’s that he says are every bit as juicy and more drinkable than NEIPA’s. I’m going to make sure I try some of their stuff next time I’m out that way for the hop harvest, but in the meantime, what are some other ones?

Like ones that look like water?!?

I don't understand why this is considered a positive attribute for an IPA. These "lowly bittered" ales should be called something else like how about Pale Ale.

I'm inferring that he means a lower ratio of hop bitterness to hop flavor than IPAs of the IBU Race era. Bale Breaker's beers definitely have bitterness, but they tend to make beers with less malt sweetness so less bitterness is required to balance.

A debate of IPA style guidelines is the last thing this forum needs. Got any answers to the question?

I prefer even my West Coast style IPAs to be unfiltered, but many of them are great regardless. Stone, Lagunitas, and Green Flash all come to mind for crystal clear, amazing IPAs. Sierra Nevada, too, for that matter. Hop Bullet is killer.

I'd really like to hope that good beer can have appropriate hype regardless of clarity. But the recent Cellarmaker and Moonraker collaboration for SF Beer Week, From Yakima with Love, might indicate otherwise. I post these with the personal caveats of having not tried the beer nor seen all associated marketing.

My only point is that this may indicate that there's an actual anti-hype associated with hoppy releases that are not hazy and dependent upon the parties involved in the recipe. Hoping this to be a limited happenstance, as beer needs to be assessed by far more than just a visual and it's similarity to juice. My own $0.02, hope this helps.

Based on my experiences on the commercial side, I don’t think this is inaccurate. I am hoping to be proven otherwise though. I have an idea for a recipe that I want to brew and I expect it to be very clear without filtration. I was hoping that this topic would turn up a few beers that are similar to what I have in mind that I could sample ahead of time.

In these parts, Half Acre, 3 Floyds, and Pipeworks continue to pump out awesome IPAs that are nice and bright. Aromatically hoppy beers with low bitterness have been around long before the hazies...

Add me to the list of folks that hope you're assessment is proven otherwise. I'd hope in this day and age that good beer speaks for itself, but perhaps it's visual appearance speaks far louder than it's other attributes are ever given a chance to compete with for a true assessment.

Bale Breaker has been around a few years now, and they make great beers, that, thankfully, don't get a lot of hype. I can just grab sixers of Field 41, Top Cutter, Bottom Cutter, and Leota Mae whenever I want. Their brewery only IPAs, and fresh hop stuff is also amazing.

any Alvarado St. west coast IPA.

"Lazy" was terrific, as is "Minesweeper".

No suggestions, but fwiw I've had a few locally distributed low IBU hazed IPAs that were much better after more or less cold crashing in the fridge and not pouring out the last 4 oz of trub.

True these weren't great to begin with, but ditching the detritus and keeping the massive late hop additions... that could be nice!

Now, about needing to call an IPA a "Clear IPA" :grimacing:

Why does it even matter if it’s clear or hazy. If it tastes good drink it.. ffs.

Bale Breaker makes some solid beers, but I don’t think they have anything in common with NEIPA’s. Different flavor profiles, different mouthfeels.

I don't know how new or hyped this is. I tried one named Clear AF by El Segundo, which personally I found much better than any NEIPA I've tried (with some Modern Times exceptions perhaps)

Here's some fantastic beers I've come across that have good to excellent clarity in the can or bottle.

    La Cumbre Elevated IPA
Station 26 Juicy Banger IPA (anything from S26)
    Melvin IPA (Anything from Melvin)
    Odell IPA (a classic)
    Outer Range Two Pound Tent
    Comrade Superpower
    Cigar City Jai Alai
Pipeworks- great IPAs, not hazy at all

Edit: none of these have "huge" hype, but are great beers.

I second El Segundo. Clear AF was great...these guys are consistently putting out good IPA’s (usually clear, since we are in the subject).

Interesting list. Jai Alai has long been one of my favorites, but not a new release. I love the Melvin beers I’ve had. La Cumbre is a beer I love, but is outdated in my opinion and is not something that receives much hype recently.
