Sounds like the old Odd Side debate! Sometimes when you put a high limit it just encourages people to go to the limit. If there was no limit, those same people might be more likely to stop at a case or two. Who knows...

The email I got referred to this as "No Rules Day". I think they are trying to make this more of an event like Dark Lord Day or Huna Day. Good luck with that.

I like this beer, but I'll wait for it to be distributed.

Can't tell if troll or not...did you read the headline of the thread?

I did read it and no, I'm not trolling. My belief is that they will distribute eventually and I'd rather not go to a crazy release of I don't have to.

I think it could be viewed as similar but there are some nuances - Pipeworks has more types of BA beers with a lot fewer bottles of each individual release, whereas Perrin's No Rules is kind of their one big beer with a lot more produced.

And, maybe more importantly, I get the impression Pipeworks more regular offerings and their "every 3-9 months or so" bombers all move pretty regularly in comparison.

I'm pretty disappointed in this decision, not from a rabid fan of the beer perspective, but just from a disrespecting the local stores that keep them in business standpoint.

    I just think it's dumb.

Sorry for posting and going MIA, work has been nuts. But looks like most people took care of any questions directed towards me

I am with the general sentiment of this thread though. It is a bad idea. They will not sell out. It will hit distro eventually. Always a good chance I am wrong, but come on. They is no way in hell if they made the same amount they will sell out at the brewery. As many have said you can still buy this at certain places. Bottles and gift packs (that are on clearance now).

This made me think though. So there are the stores that carry goose products so they can get BCBS. Common thing. I am guessing there are stores that carry Perrin's other products because they get No Rules... so are we going to see decreased sales of all of their beers as a result of them trying to "protect the brand"?

I deal with creating and protecting brands all the time. It is my job. I would love for Perrin to go into detail about what their "brand" is. Please layout your mission, vision, and values for me. And try not to include #maxprofitz in that statement.

But as a business, particularity one that is now part of a larger conglomerate, presumably with shareholders, isn't making money part of the gameplan? And I wonder to what extent their mission and values are even dictated by themselves anymore....

I'm playing devil's advocate here, but maybe, by maximizing profits, they are able to better retain employees, give more money to charities, run more fundraisers, have special events for members? It's not inconceivable that max profits = better staff/community outreach.

I partially agree with maximizing profits (and realize you're just playing devil's advocate), but I think there is a difference here in short-term versus long-term profits...which is where the vision & mission come into play that @Jmorey references. What is interesting is that you would think being part of a larger conglomerate would mean they have some more strategic thinking minds, and it seems like this strategy could potentially backfire. Or, they realize that there will be a bit of a hubbub about it initially (as we are discussing here), they will get a little extra $$$ from selling it on their own and then they can get it to retailers to keep them happy (at least until it sits on the shelves for too long).

And then everyone will pretty much forget about it and move on and buy their beer anyway...kind of like how many have forgotten (or at least moved on) from another brewery in Grand Haven that refused to acknowledge their infected beer.

If we're being honest, the impetus to make money is there whether they are part of a larger group or not. We like to downplay the profit part of craft beer here on the BA forums, but it's very real and I don't think we should begrudge businesses for wanting to maximize their profits.

To that end, this move by Perrin is a mistake, not because they are thinking about the bottom line in their approach, but because the seem to have a major disconnect between the logistics of their release and how to generate the greatest impact to bottom line. On the surface, their thinking seems very short-sighted and naive...

    1) Generate demand by limiting access
    2) Keep supply high to maximize the number of units sold
    3) ???
    4) Profit

Problem with this is that it seems to gloss over the fact that constraining the access point isn't really going to have a direct impact on primary demand. Brewery-only beers that end up being highly-sought are that way because of *supply*, because more often than not, a brewery-only release means that the total quantity available is low.

In this case, you're actually going to hurt demand because there are going to be people who would have hunted around their local town/city for bottles in distribution, but aren't going to bother with trying to get their hands on it from the brewery that might be hours away.

And that's just the simple supply/demand mechanics and before we get into the goodwill cost with distributors and retailers who are annoyed that they aren't getting any of the brewery's most popular beer or with customers who are miffed at the hassle of going to the brewery on a single day to get this beer or who do make the trip only to find bottles locally after all.

I need to stop checking on this thread, because each time I think about their change in tactics, I'm confused all over again. I'm not offended as a beer drinker--I'm offended as a marketer.

For some dumb reason I broke down and picked up a sixer of Falcon Punch. Let's see, 1 can poured out a bit darker and tasted different than the others, 2 cans were noticeably underfilled, and the level of carbination seemed inconsistent overall. On top of that, the beer was extremely "meh." Glad to see that their commitment to "quality" hasn't changed.

I had a couple bottles early last year and thought it was ok. I bought a gift pack around christmas and no rules was a sugar soup mess. The malted milk ball porter was better. Good luck making mad profits off of a mediocre beer that people have to travel for. And in bomber format. I'll see it in stores next christmas and pass this time.

Very interested to see the turnout in this weather. Went in similar conditions last year and it was poorly ran in my opinion. In first 100 and took 2.5 hours to get in if memory serves me right. 1 point of sale. Then, everywhere in distro.
Okay, now time to stop whining and have a Morningwood
