I was going to let it go, but honestly this type of pretentious post is exactly what turns so many people off of these forums. Not to mention, your line of thought here is just wrong yet you’re trying to correct someone. Have you ever heard a brewer describe beer as “transparent?” Sure, maybe it would be more appropriate to use “bright” or “brite” but even my professors (which included German master brewers when I studied in Munich) used the term “clear.” It’s very obvious what I meant, why bother with the ignorantly snide remark?

If you want new and exciting clear IPAs ......go to London or EDI and every city in between. The craft cask scene is on fire in the UK --and mostly hoppy and brilliantly bright...although there are a few cask NEIPAs kicking around over there. Fortunately, the political incorrectness of cloudy/hazy/turbid beer in the British Isles is so strong that it's not likely that the juicy NEIPA will ever be more than a passing oddity.

I enjoyed Hop Bullet by Sierra Nevada recently. Appreciated it a lot more in today's haze craze than I would've a couple years ago

I have to try this if it's anything like the DIPA in their fresh hop pack. I don't typically love doubles, but that one was great.

    Couldn't resist hassling you:slight_smile:

TH Bright is an interesting one for all the reasons you identified. If pressed, I'd ultimately say that it's not clear (or "bright", as it were) in the classic sense of the term, but it does satisfy some of the other attributes the OP was looking. FWIW, I thought the can of Bright w/ Citra I had recently might've been one of the best beers I've had from them.

I think conan doesn't flocc like 1318 which gives the beers a yeasty flavor that muddies up the water as it were.

I have not. I just know that ever since NEIPAs gained notoriety, there have been many stubborn people who claim they (or brewers in general) can make a clear IPA, every bit as good with the same characteristics as an NEIPA, which is contrary to my own experience, both in drinking commercial beers and brewing beers. I actually like Denny and have brewed a few of his beer recipes, and value his knowledge. I just think he, and many "old schoolers," mostly west coasters, are off base on the NEIPA subject. IMO of course.

I’ve only had Bright once, but the look of the beer I had (in terms of clarity) did not resemble pictures of this beer that I’ve seen online. I’m inclined to think it’s batch variance but I have no idea and I also don’t roll cans prior to opening.

I have never consumed a clear IPA that has the same soft/velvety/pillowy mouthfeel of a so called 'NE' style IPA. I have had some clear IPAs that had a quality that some folks describe as "juicy" but not at the same level as so called 'NE' style IPAs.

    Cheers!

Just so you know what to expect going in I have had both and it's nothing like that one at all and I enjoyed Hop Bullet more.

Don’t know if they are hyped but I know they are respected but Melvin IPAs.

Had there new Hop Shocker yesterday and man was it juicy. If it isn’t getting the hype it should.

These recently showed up in Mass and I don't know about hype per se, but they've been very well received in the NE forum. And I thought this was the only clear IPA I'd ever had with a nose that was as big and fruity as the hazy options. It tasted and drank differently than an NE IPA, but there's no question it was absolutely dripping with hops while not being overly bitter.

Great stuff. I just wish the 4 packs of 12 ounce cans were cheaper.

I *think* that the variants tend to be cloudier than the standard version. I had Bright w/ Citra a couple months back and I didn't think it looked all that different from the rest of their stuff. I also didn't find it tasted radically different either, but some people claim to like it a lot less because it doesn't use their house yeast.

I want to try Fat Head's Hop JuJu. Every time I'm up in Portland it isn't on tap. :slight_frown:

That awesome to hear they are being well received in that competitive market. Your dollars can only go so far with a abundance of quality options all around. Melvin Brewing I would say is the pride and joy of the IPA scene here out west. Not west coast per say but the mountain west. We don’t have any Monkish, Trillium, Treehouses out here but we have Melvin that makes world class IPAs even if they arnt haze. From Wyoming but definitely feel like apart of Idaho, Montana and Utah’s IPA scene. Even Colorado’s to some
Extent alltho they have there own haze craze going on there with Weldworks, Odd 13, Cerebral, Outerrange etc etc.

I’m glad to see they are reaching the masses even tho it’s killing my trade game a bit:wink:

    Cheers

While your opinion may be valid, how many blind triangle tests have you utilized to reach this opinion? Were any scientific methods used? Or is this opinion based simply off of your own personal and clearly biased experiences?

While I’m not sure how hyped they are 8-bit Aleworks brews some really tasty clear IPAs. Legend of Zymur is one of my favorites.

It will be interesting to see the reply to your query.

As you well know I conducted a blind taste test (my wife was the proctor) of the same IPA but one was fermented with 1056 and the other with 1318. I was able to distinguish between the two beers via a triangle taste test with the principle difference being the differing mouthfeel. After the blind (opaque glasses) triangle test I poured the remaining portions of the beer into clear glasses. The beer that was cloudy in appearance was the beer that had a soft mouthfeel while the beer that was clear(er) in appearance had a more dry finish/mouthfeel. The cloudy beer was brewed with Wyeast 1318 and the clear(er) beer was brewed with Wyeast 1056.

    Cheers!

Glad you posted this. Now that you mention it, the beer I had was the Citra one too. The one I had looked nothing like pics online. It was clear... and “clearly” not a good answer for the thread if mine was not how it normally looks.
