Yep, kids and dogs that are a pain to others tell us a lot about the adults who bring them.

I'm not trying to infer anything from your post, but I'll say something regardless. I don't need to cut anyone slack because I'm not looking down on anyone who writes barleywine. It's all good. Nonetheless, I'll use this thread as an opportunity to write "barley wine." It doesn't hurt to add a little complexity and point out "barley wine."

Not inferring is a good idea.

You were tagged as an FYI since our posts were quoted together.

(I also thought you might be intrigued by the two examples, i.e., the critical battle that impacted the way we talk about a certain food, and the why of ghost and gost )

Right, and don't get me wrong, my kids have been to MANY brewpubs, just like they've been to many restaurants, it's just what we do. but they've NEVER been to a brewery that doesn't have a restaurant type experience, especially when they were younger. This brewery the other night (Hog River in Hartford), does not serve food, it's a freaking bar.

But according to the rules of compound words, it should in fact be Barleywine.
Is it Barley? No, it's made FROM barley but it isn't barley itself.
Is it wine? Not at all - it's beer- by an definition.

Therefore, a closed compound word, Barleywine. Furthermore, most closed compound words started out as open or hyphenated, and evolved over time.

Any chance u were able to catch a match at St. James' Park? I've heard the atmosphere there is 2nd to none! And lucky for you, it sounds like you were over there before Mike Ashley ran the club into the ground.

My two year old daughter smashed into a random mother yesterday at Sky Zone (indoor trampoline park) Toddler Time chasing down a ball. I apologized profusely. I could not imagine being in the same situation at a brewery (or any other place for adults) and thinking that you owe my kid an apology.

Yeah we went quite a lot! It was during the Bobby Robson / Shearer era. Amazing atmosphere on match day

This is the thread for controversial opinions, so I'm not going to debate it, but rather, just state my opinion as law.

    This is proper spelling:

This was a way to skirt the censors:

That's simply the way it is. But most folks won't be bothered to realize the difference since it's listed as barleywine on BeerAdvocate... stating "Barleywine (or Barley Wine)" as opposed to "Barley wine (or Barleywine)." Therefore, most folks type Barleywine. One is proper, the other is a variation. Look, I know I look silly. I'm intentionally letting my tone be a bit kooky. I'm just letting it all hang out. Other people debate about 1 week vs 2 week old IPAs. Not me. I'm stuck with my barley wines. "Barleywine is life" translating to BiL. Those folks care so much that they think they are shouting curse words to the world... but they don't even realize they're actually shouting "frack" or "sugar." It's barley wine, and this is the thread for that. Grumble grumble. :stuck_out_tongue:

Should anyone care about this? (No, but I do) I'm surprised that anyone is even responding to me.

If I try a new beer and feel like it's not sweet enough, I just pour a little sugar in there.
