    Another reason to hate them.

I live in Lakewood and visit The BottleHouse often. I think the deal with them is they are not trying to compete with restaurant based breweries. They have a small staff and are a place for the community to gather. I know they have a lot of parties there. Honestly this is one of the best breweries in NEO. The won 2 GABF medals and their sours are fantastic. Their Mead has really grown on me too. If quality beer is what you are after Bottlehouse is the place.

Isn't Jack Straw a pilsner? Fat Head's has a kolsch, but it's just called kolsch. Can't really compare a Czech pilsner to a kolsch.

Meh, it's not that much of a stretch. Especially if we're talking American breweries.

They have Jack Straw Pils and Kolsch. They brew the pils more often.

A Czech Pils is really similar to a Kolsch? Aside from using different yeast (ale vs lager), entirely different ingredients, different brewing techniques, originating in different areas of the world and more or less serving different purposes originally, then yeah, they are interchangeable.

I mean neither of them are IPAs, so I guess I could see how they might run together in your mind.

They're brewed by American breweries, as such, neither moniker should be used, first of all.

Second of all, meh, it's really not that much of a stretch.

Lighten up and try not to be so insufferable, you seem to be on the verge of having an aneurysm.

Please elaborate on what makes them so similar. One an ale, the other a lager.

And while you're at it please explain why American brewers can't use European names.

    No Berliner Weisse?
    Russian Imperial Stout?
From now own please make sure you state that it's an American style IPA you're drinking.
Can inland breweries make a porter? What about Baltic Porter?
    Is Gose off limits?

If a brewer decides to recreate a Czech Pils as faithfully as he can what is he allowed to call it?

There are far more elaborate, relevant threads for you to wrestle with the status of the lagered ale known Kolsch, from the region of Cologne.

I find Kolsch and Czech Pilsener similar, to my mind, in my opinion. But you know what, I've never had them in close succession of each other, nor done a side by side by side by side, because really, it never struck me to do so, until now. I'd love to do that, but in my experience, these beers are best ultra fresh, and change rapidly, especially due to the terrible packaging most utilize, when they are bottled. I don't believe I'll ever have the chance to do a valid comparison.

It's pretty widely accepted that American breweries bastardize most regionally specific styles. But aside from that, it's also widely recognized that Kolsch and Czech Pils are region specific, much like Gueuze and Champagne. Trying to make an "authentic" version of any of those styles outside of their regions is often frowned upon, if not viewed as an insult, or even verging on illegal, if those regions had their say, including very specifically worded conventions and regulations on the very beer styles we're discussing. I'm not being a stickler here, just stating what those who most deeply respect and continue the tradition of these styles support.

Trying to confuse those region specific styles with universal styles like Berliner, RIS, IPA, Gose, and Baltic Porter is reaching, to say the least.

    Cheers!

Saucy is a very nice place. Some pizza is awsome some ok. They have some really good beers and I agree, still better then some other breweries aroujd but I have had some bad beers from them . As many have said their beers are very. Clean but I rather have a beer that is not clean and taste way better.

I think they have the nicest brewery probably and good food so based on that alone I don't think they are going ahywhere

So today we stopped at Colission Bend, Thirsty Dog and Saucy. Out of the three, Saucy was surprisingly our favorite. Nice atmosphere, beers were decent to solid and service was really good. Didn't get any food. I actually really liked their Kolsch and Hefeweizen more than most of the stuff they had. The Oatmeal Cookie Stout whatever it was on Nitro was a bit of a surprise, they really hit the flavor profile. They had some duds as well, but overall we would like to go back in the future. I didn't have any expectation honestly and we almost didn't go, but glad we stopped in. Best of the three today for sure. Ease of parking was also a benefit.

Thirsty Dog had a nice spot. The beer though fell a bit flat. Mind you, we didn't get any of the big stouts and stuff, sticking with some lighter options. Overall, we had better beer at the original location. Citra Dog wasn't as impressive, the Helles appeared to have some oxidation setting in and a DIPA we had was very malty. To name a few. The smoked lager was probably my favorite out of what we had shared.

Colission Bend beers were very middle of the road. Better than Thirsty Dog and under Saucy overall. Would be in no rush to come back here anytime soon.

I would still say Masthead (even pre-NE IPA hype  ) is the best new CLE brewery though. Although, Fat Head's still wins for best in the land!

The recent one off BA Siberian with Bent Tree Coffee is out of this world delicious. If you get a chance to grab some on draft (it's even been around other places like Market District) definitely jump on it.

Sounds good! I bet at Market District it would be a lot cheaper, too. I think most of Thirsty Dog's BBA options were something like $8+ for 5oz pours or something like that. Shocked me how much, considering what a comparable beer most elsewhere would cost the same price for an entire 12oz pour, for example. But I know you pay for the location and "sights" I suppose. Even Beerhead next door which we also made a pit stop at was nearly $8 or more for any pint on their taplist. We ended up with just a single Hazy Jane from BrewDog to split and that was quite good.

Agreed--the prices were way overboard, which I really don't understand at their own place.

Beerhead is rough. Nice taplist and food is ok, but those prices are a joke. Not sure what they're going for there. Always dead when I get drug there for lunch by coworkers.

Yeah, that really surprised us. The tap list was really nice though, just wish pricing was better. We would have definitely stuck around more and got a few vs. just one, had the prices been normal. But I’m sure they make a killing on game nights and weekend summer evenings.
