Yes, it's that time of the year again. I've been checking the various West Coast Beer info sites, and at this point kegs have been distributed in NorCal, SoCal and Colorado I believe. So I have to think PtY kegs should be showing up here in PDX any time now, possibly sometime this week (New School posted their annual PtY watch list on 2/22/17 last year, but so far have posted nothing about PtY availability for 2018).

For many, Younger continues to be the benchmark by which all other DIPA/TIPA's are judged, and of course Oregon is one of the few areas of the country where you can get it. Anyway, if anyone hears about any upcoming tappings over the next week or two, I would ask that you post that information here. Thanks!

    Cheers!

I think you should tweet Apex and ask. Just for fun.

Seriously though, I'm guessing this is easier to get this year. Last year both Roscoe's and Belmont Station just tapped theirs without fanfare (and this after BS had used the beer as a ticketed event for many years) and although I know it's becoming popular to question Younger's supremacy, I felt like it wasn't quite the pinnacle that I remembered it being.

The real question is whether BS just taps it or waits for the unveiling of their revamped taproom.

If the folks at Apex had more of a sense of humor (my impression is that they have none), I would whole heartedly do just that. I might even ask if they have a schedule set up yet for the times they plan to briefly discontinue tapping PtY, just to fuck with people (like they apparently did the past two years).

As for finding it more easily this year, I would hope that's the case, but I'm not optimistic. The lines at RR were longer than ever this year, and according to the Pacific forum, the Toronado blew through their first keg in 20 minutes. With the increased interest in NE style hazy IPA's, I was hoping that many folks would perceive Younger as passé, and so maybe fewer folks would go out of their way to find it this year. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case

I had a similar hope, but then I saw that hellish line stretching for a mile around Russian River and just shook my head. Worse comes to worse and I can't find PtY, I'll just drink my Ecliptic Hypernova, or Ruebans Blimey That's Biter.

There are far better triple IPAs I don't have to stand in line for, or battle truck chasers for.

Anything's possible, but it's not like anyone in Portland has ever put Younger on tap with the kind of fanfare and forewarning that RR and Toronado do. I don't think you can really compare them to Portland, where it's more of a mystery when it'll be tapped (or smoke and mirrors, in the case of Apex).

Last year Belmont put it on tap, added it to the online list and when I walked in an hour later there was no line, in fact very few people at all. They joked that I could get multiple pours without a problem. It's not like it's gonna stay available for days on end, but I don't know what's changed to turn Portland into a Toronado shitshow.

That said, I whole-heartedly agree with anyone who bows out. I wasn't disappointed by any stretch, but the world has caught up. I don't feel I need to chase that beer again.

We don't chase trucks in the PNW. We just idly follow them nonchalantly and ironically. Unless you're a midwest transplant

Or so claims a DC transplant

Anyone who needs a triple IPA fix will find plenty of choices. Right now there are four different triple IPAs available at two locations near me, and I'm out in Beaverton.

    Including Breakside's Safe Word. Yum.

Same at Beermongers as well last year.

I didn't mean to compare beer bars in PDX to RR and the Toronado, but was pointing out that given the ongoing, continuing fanfare for the beer at those places, doesn't bode well for any significant drop off in the beer's popularity here.

That being said, if this year is like last year, I'll be more than happy with that.

All that aside, still no word on any sighting in PDX from New School or Hop Watch.

Probably one of my favorites last year. That beer is damn good.

Some years have been better than others I think (there were a few batches I had were a bit too sweet for me), but I agree with you. Am hoping it will still be on tap over at Tin Bucket tomorrow (can't go today, as I have a chardonnay tasting event obligation with the wife).

It also appears to be on at Breakside Slabtown, if you need a backup plan.

Thanks! Turns out it's still on at Tin Bucket and tastes very fresh. One of the best versions I can recall ever trying. Not as sweet as in past years, and not as boozy either. Absolutely delicious.

It's the perfect palate cleanser for Rusty Nail and C&C Bbomb.

They still have Rusty Nail? Impressive.

I'd head over there and indulge if I didn't have people coming to stately Vurt Manor for dinner tonight.

Just got an email response from SamuraiArtist at New School:

"we have been waiting for news on PtY but apparently there is still no word on when they arrive. It's definitely late this year and I should know anyday now theoretically. No one seems to know right now though."

Agreed. Abv. is also a much more reasonable 10% this year as well (at least according to the Beer menu at Tin Bucket). Why, for a TIPA, that's purty near sessionable.

I'm hoping PtY is randomly on tap this Saturday; heading into Portland to grab some stuff at Modern Times.

You're timing could well be perfect.

The latest email I received from SamuraiArtist was that the truck was delayed for bad weather in the pass (I assume near Shasta), but that it's now expected to reach the distributor this week (I would hope today or tomorrow). Knock on wood, but that should hopefully result in the beer hitting taphouses tomorrow or Friday.
