Well, I'm back. I hate not to gush over a new beer so here's another from Søle: Kodama, an oak fermented Schwarzbier. This was canned on 11/22/2017 and while I'm not an expert on how Schwarzbiers age, this is really tasty. The oak adds a whole new dimension to what's a pretty good Schwarz bier to begin with. Here's my review:

    3.94/5 rDev +3.7%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Poured from 16 oz. can into Søle teku glass. It pours almost jet black with dark mahogany hues at the top of the glass, and a thin, ecru-colored head and soapy lacing. The nose is primarily roasty malt, nuts, and oak. I'm tasting a lot of oak up front with a nice malty backbone. I oak adds another dimension to the taste especially as the glass warms. Also, a hint of caramel emerges. It has a great mouth feel: pleasant carbonation and at only 4.5% ABV you can easily drink more than one. Schwarzbiers are somewhat rare and I applaud any brewer who will brew one - particularly when they add a nuance like oak fermenting.

I never chimed in on music. I love to drink beer on the deck while listening to music on Youtube. I listen to a lot of Rolling Stones (from the Brian Jones era through Exile on Main Street), Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead (yeah, @cavedave!), David Bowie, and Led Zeppelin, along with Steve Earle, Drive By Truckers, Marty Stuart, Gillian Welsh, and lots of Johnnie Cash. For me, it's the best way to relax!

Had that one on tap at the source yesterday. It was my favorite of the OH beers I tried.

Hello, NBS friends and family. The launch @cjgiant is certainly timely I spent last night in Dayton with Little O, Sister O, Niece and Nephew O, and other sundry family and friends watching my “baby” brother’s band The Give Ups headline a show of 4 bands to celebrate his 40th birthday.

Me turning the double nickel in January didn’t affect me in the least, but my bro turning 40 gave me pause. Time is certainly fleeting - I can remember the day he was born like it was 40 seconds ago, not 40 years ago. Here’s a video of the band doing a Ramones cover from a few years ago. Loud, crunchy guitars are good for my soul .....

First beer up tonight is the first beer I’ve had from Toppling Goliath since we moved from Minnesota to Texas last March. We are truly blessed with a plethora of world-class breweries in the Midwest.

Pour is a very hazy orange color, not turbid, just exceptionally hazy, and an off-white head. Aromas are dank, citrusy hops, with grapefruit and juicy pineapple dominating the nose, but also mango notes.

The mango is up front on the taste, and dovetails nicely into the juicy pineapple and grapefruit, and there’s a light malt component, too. This is the kind of beer TG does really well, and this specific beer is no exception.

    Happy New DIPA Sunday!

Pretty nice day on the Western Slope, 40 at the trailhead, sunny, windy. One dude that could not control his 3 dogs. Having a tasty brew, watching some Star Trek reruns on BBCA, damn the quality of these shows in HD from the 60s, pretty fuckn' awesome, especially the space scenes, planets, nebulas, galaxies. I don't remember if this shit was added or something, but did not look like that on my TV, not even the color one we had. Might be back with another.

I usually end up disappointed by hyped up beers in some way. Not this time though, and this really is the first exception. This is by far the best stout that I have ever had, and I've had Double Barrel Hunapuh and BCBS Rare. First straight 5 rating I've ever given. What really stands out about this to me, and what I always appreciate in a good beer, is the balance here, which is absolutely sublime. Nothing stands out too much, all the different flavours, sweetness and bitterness, are all in perfect balance.

Pours an oily, pitch black coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells absolutely intoxicating of caramel, roasted malt and coffee, with lovely, mellow notes ouf bourbon, oak, vanilla chocolate, toffee and maple. Taste follows the nose, with a complex and incredibly well-balanced harmony of caramel, roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, toffee, bourbon, oak, vanilla and maple, with some earthy notes and a certain spicyness coming through as well. There is a slight bitterness in the aftertaste that really balances out the caramel, maple sweetness, not that it would be too pronounced in the first place. A little booze coming through as well, but it's such a lovely, mellow shade of bourbon that it doesn't feel unpleasant at all. Rich body with a thick, oily mouthfeel and low carbonation. This is without a doubt my new favorite stout, no contest. The exceptional balance is what makes this special. Nothing really stands out too much, which is a GOOD thing. Balancing a stout this complex so well is a true accomplishment.

Cheers everyone! Somehow this is my very first tick from Funky Buddha and oh boy is it a great one. This is the Wild Turkey version of BBA Morning Wood...I loooove a great BBA porter and the sweet maple and burnt sugars play so well with the bourbon and chocolate flavors. Really wish I had more than just the one bottle. Ill get around to my full review later. [IMG]

Good evening NBS, hope everyone had a good day so far. Made my usual Sunday errands and just finished up the laundry for the week. Got a few new beers with my bottle returns today as usual. My 6400th review will be on Tuesday.

    New Beers:

Fantastic kellerbier! Great head retention and lasting lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big cracker, bread dough, toasted biscuit, and light nutty malts; with some herbal, grassy, light peppery noble hops. Light herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; creamy/bready/grainy malts and some sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness. Perfectly clean lagering, never fruity/yeasty. Very flavorful/refreshing, 5.2%. Amazingly rich and clean Pils/Munich malt flavors, with solid earthy hop presence and balance. Everything I have had from this brewery has been stellar. This is no different. Wow, wish I could find them easier than I have been. They nail everything to style. 4.25
    [IMG]

Fantastic DIPA! Amazing lasting head retention and thick soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big lightly tart/tangy peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, lemon, orange, grapefruit, passion fruit, papaya, strawberry, guava, citrus peel/zest, and light pepper/pine hops; with moderate honey, vanilla, creamy lactose, and biscuity malt sweetness; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Very mild pine, citrus peel, herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness; and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; very creamy/bready/silky malt/lactose mouthfeel; light sticky hops and tangy fruit. Slightly increasing lingering bitterness/tangy fruit dryness. No cloying or astringent hops. Unreal drink ability, minimal warming 9.3%. Mind blowingly juicy Citra hops and fruit; with balanced sweet malts and lactose. A dessert DIPA if there ever was one, but it's not overwhelming on sweetness at all. I was pretty blown away by the Multiflora, this is in the same ballpark. Very NEIPA-like. Still have the double marshmallow one to try yet. 4.28
    [IMG]

Awesome Berliner. Great head retention and lacing for the style. Aromas and flavors of big tart/tangy passion fruit, fruit skin, peach, pear, pineapple, papaya, lemon, lime, green apple, white wine, berries, hay, and grass; with moderate vanilla, cream, wheat, cracker, and white bready malts; with light pepper and lacto funk. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit tang, and light spiciness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body; and fairly crisp/clean finishing. Balanced creamy/grainy malt/lactose, lactic acid, and fruit tang/tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy fruit dryness, zero puckering sourness. Refreshingly drinkable, 4.8%. Another outstanding Berliner, right on par with the rest of them. Awesome balance of fruit, Lacto, pale/wheat malts, and lactose. I could drink these all year. 4.15

Ok, posting this as much for NBS as to warn others about another BAD NE-style recipe.

Beer #2 is the Confused Therapist from Dust Bowl. Only thing that even resembles the NE-style is some tropical aspects on the nose. Haze = nope, juicy = nope, limited bitterness = hell no, pillowy = nope. Pours nearly amber in color with 3 finger of variable density white head which had moderate retention and left hints of lacing. Nose starts with some tropical prominence, tangerine and passion fruit, but as it warms the caramel sweetness and pine resin begin to dominate, with some floral undertones. Taste follows the warm nose on the beer, pine forward plenty of caramel sweetness, juicy and tropical aspects nowhere to be found. Finishes with a bunch of bitterness and moderate astringency. Mouthfeel in short is a syrupy mess.

Summary from my review: "Feels heavily like a cash grab. Little, other than some tropical aspects on the nose, resembles a NE-Style IPA. Given the following language on the label "Unfiltered, New England style, juicy, hazy...confused? Don't be." I really think the only people confused here are the brewer's that feel this is targeting the NE-style. Wouldn't recommend to anyone, would recommend a therapist though to anyone feeling this hits the NE-style. This is MUCH closer to DFH 120 min IPA than most any NE-style recipe I've had to date."

Overall rating link, BA score = 2.79, rdev = -28.6% This might honestly be my first NBS drain pour, this was not at all what I was expecting, nor in the mood for right now.

A bit late to NBS but happy to be here after a busy day. My first new beer today far exceeded my expectations. I love it when that happens! Last week, one of the guys at a local bottle shop told me to check this one out. Based on the description, I would have given it a pass:
The blueberry made sense to me, but I could not imagine that a Gose with maple syrup and lactose would be worth a purchase and a coveted NBS reservation. Well, the dude at the bottle shop has never steered me wrong and he certainly did not here! This was a fantastic beer:

    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

The beer had a moderately hazy amber color with a slight blue hue to it. A vigorous pour coaxed a one-finger white head that quickly settled, leaving a thin but foamy cap. The aroma stood up to the beer's bold description, with fresh blueberries at first and then joined by sweet maple syrup and a faint salty/lemony smell. The overall aroma was very much like blueberry pancakes. The taste did not disappoint: sweet maple syrup and blueberries that were quickly met with a slightly sharp lemony acidity, striking a fantastic sweet/sour balance. The lactose was there but was restrained, working with the wheat to create a slightly sweet, bready backbone to support the flavors. The finish was crisp and slightly tart, prompting me to drink this rather quickly. This is a fun and enjoyable beer. I'm going to look for more of these. Cheers!

I enjoyed my latest (non-mystery!) brew a bit ago, but I was finishing up some Mass Effec....I mean, really important chores and things! :flushed: So here's my latest: Komes Baltic Porter.

Very straightforward Baltic porter, with a blend of dark fruit, toffee, coffee, and roast tones on the nose and palate. Enjoyable enough, but I wouldn't seek it out again.

The pour is jet black, no leakage on the edges, except at the bottom to a dark mahogany, and a rich tan head. Beautiful. The nose is sweet chocolate and oak notes from the barrel, and the slightest note of coffee.

The taste is influenced by the lactose addition, which combines with the cacao nibs to give this a creamy chocolate taste which is not typical in imperial stouts. The barrel is subjugated to the background, which fits my palate better, and allows the chocolate flavors to steal the show. This hits my sweet spot (pun intended).

Petrus - Trader Joe's Sour Cherry

I have the feeling that my post about this beer would be better off in the current controversial opinions thread.

I am guessing that this isn't labeled as or classified here as a kriek because the brewery is a bit too far outside of the Brussels city limits. I really don't know. I got it at Trader Joe's for about $10 due to it being a Valentine's holiday tie-in.

This beer is an attractive and audacious, bright, clear pinkish red. Tastes of cherries... sweet and sour, and a little earthy. The acidity is certainly very present, but everything comes together in a rounded way.

This tastes like an "authentic" Belgian kriek. The gap between this and "genuine" krieks really doesn't feel very large to me at all (if even there in some cases). I don't ordinarily drink krieks, so take this with a serious grain of salt. Based on memory only, I wouldn't put this up at the level of Drie Fonteinen specifically, but I've also never been a huge Cantillon fan. Having said that, this beer isn't like the more specialized Cantillon krieks. Did I mention I got this at the supermarket for about $10?

One thing's for sure... no matter what they call it here, it ain't a freakin' "Belgian pale ale."
