Wonder if he will contract brew at a larger facility to keep up with demands. Hard to expand where he currently is, and any type of expansion or creation of a new barn is going to take quite a while.

Tough when there are no staples to contract out: process, repetition, enrichment

that's true. there are only a few beers that he has brewed more than once iirc.

Either way, i truly don't hope they become a victim of their own success. they make good beer and Alex seems like a genuinely awesome person, so it's nice to see them doing so well. but as digdug mentioned, loyalty can be weak in our community.

Hell, even 1 or 2 more fermenters may really help if there is room there.

Frankly, and not to sound like one of those 'back in the day' folks, but the place was awesome before they decided to go with crowlers. The tavern had 3-5 Troon releases on at once, and you could casually stroll into the brewery and get a fill of 2 or 3 beers. After they switched though, it's been a slowly increasing shit show, and I've all but given up on giving Troon and Brick Farm my business at this point.

Like some others here, I live a good 45 minutes away from BFT/Troon. I also live 45 minutes away from Tired Hands. Guess where I wind up going all the time? It just sucks because I love both the tavern and Troon, but until something changes, I'm done.

A good problem to have, though, for Troon.

yeah i don't go to either anymore... TH has been of lower and lower quality every passing month.. haven't been in 6-7 months because i just got burnt out on them and i've still tried their cans but they quite frankly are a shell of themselves... Troon i'd love to hit but it's just too much these days... Luckily Referend hasn't become a shit show... stay away.... stay far away people! No ipas i guess haha

I love all these armchair brewery owners giving their 2 cents on how Alex should run his brewery.

-He went to the crowlers because growler fills were turning into a shit show and taking away all his time from, you know, actually brewing beer.

-It sucks that the brewery and tavern can't keep up with demand, but it's not his fault he brews good beer that is in the wheelhouse of the trade-bait community that get people milling around the property and neighborhood hoping for a release on a random Friday afternoon. I think his erratic release schedule is trying to discourage this behavior and maybe get more beer into the locals hands, but beer geeks gonna beer geek.

-Some of you are making a lot of assumptions about how to run a brewery in regards to expansion. There are a lot of horror stories about brewers that overextended too fast and it crushed them. I think he's doing well and will do what is necessary when he can.

    In conclusion, stop whining.

Are you not now whining yourself? :sunglasses:

"-He went to the crowlers because growler fills were turning into a shit show and taking away all his time from, you know, actually brewing beer."
--If that's the case, where's the beer? I could be totally wrong, but there seemed to be more beer to go around when he was just doing growlers. Besides, if the growler era was a shit show, what would you say this crowler era is? Super-massive shit show? Also, it's my belief that growlers don't hold anywhere near the trade-bait value as crowlers do.

If Alex has any brains, he isn't reading this thread anyway.

I get what you mean though and do try to make a conscious effort not to discuss business decisions as I am not a stakeholder

as he doesn't have much tanks space when the tanks are filled.. what is he to do... brew more beer in his imagination.. the whole let him have more time to brew doesn't hold up with me... he can only brew so much.. sure now that he has what like 3 business hours of open time per week instead of what 10-12 when he was filling growlers he now has more time to focus on his business... a whole 8-10 hours more time.. where as somebody mentioned... he can now brew more beer

he got too popular too fast.. can't keep up.. the farm sells through his beer so fast he can't keep much more than 2 beers on tap there... it's just a scenario that has hit critical mass and i'm sure behind the scenes something is probably in the works... nobody wants to leave money on the table and both of these places are leaving money on the table at the moment

500 crowlers that lasted for a few hours after announcement last night. 2 IPAs on in the Tavern (Chew Your Bones and Hyperbolic) Only hiccup was the Tavern was having trouble taping the new keg so that didn't go on at 5pm as planned. They seemed to have the problem ironed out around 8pm. I saw 2 sixtels being brought in to the Tavern so it should be around through the weekend for pours.

The first 9 or so months of Troon was some of my favorite beer experiences ever...the drive, chatting with Alex, tasting the beers, the tavern...such a chill hidden gem.

I kinda weirdly wish someone would just open up a Troon-like operation in an interesting part of NJ I've never been to so that I can enjoy nine months of that again before the inevitable aluminum hype machine and ISO/FT line-bros swallow it alive.

Definitely agree. I wonder how things would be if they never introduced crowlers and stuck with the growler program. The beers that were coming out a month or so before they switched to crowlers were awesome, so it's not like the quality skyrocketed with the switch, only the convenience of a can vs glass.

This is why I am glad that twin elephant doesn't release cans all that frequently.

My favorite Troon beers were from before crowlers (Born Without Your Funny Bone and Vaporwave)

was going through last week's post. It's hilarious reading complaints from people who apparently "wasted their time" by lining up with no pre-warning that there wasn't going to be a release....from a brewery with no set release schedule

Alex/Troon had the perfect response to this as well.
