Outstanding English porter. Great head retention/lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big toasted coconut, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, and brown bread; with light notes of coffee, dark fruit, herbal hops, and yeast earthiness. Mild herbal hop and roasted bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; very creamy, silky, bready malt mouthfeel that is fantastic. Slight sticky hops/coconut, chalky roast, and dryness. No cloying sweetness. Very rich with an impressive mouthfeel/body for 5.5%. Balanced English malt complexity, coconut, and cocoa nib flavors; with mild fruity yeast and earthy hop balance against sweetness. Going to be buying this one again for sure. They nailed it. 4.15

New to the state as of last week. Very nice IPA. Great head retention/lacing, crystal clarity. Aromas and flavors of tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, melon, citrus peel/zest, pepper, and pine hops; with moderate toasted biscuit, light caramel malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Slight resins/rinds, increasing lingering bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Very easy drinking, never aggressive, 7.3%. Old school IPA as expected. Classic C/Simcoe/Amarillo hops. Balanced juicy/dank hop complexity; nice bready Munich/Victory malt backbone, with mild residual sweetness. Probably wouldn't reach for this again with all of the other IPAs available, but it's very well made. 3.88

Rivers Edge Norwegian Farmhouse ale with Juniper/chokeberries. Voss Kveik yeast strain. This was awesome! Aromas and flavors of lightly tart berries, peach, pear, apricot, orange, mango, melon, red apple, citrus peel, juniper, spruce, pepper, hay, straw, herbal, floral, and grass; with moderate wheat, cracker, bread dough, toasted biscuit malts; and yeasty earthiness. Light-moderate peppery yeast spiciness, herbal/grassy bitterness, and light yeast/wheat tang/tartness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; creamy/bready/grainy wheat/spelt/oat mouthfeel; light sticky hops and yeast/wheat tang. Lightly increasing bitter/spicy/tangy dryness. No cloying/astringency. Refreshingly drinkable, 4.2%. Really spot on saison. I've tried this yeast in the past, it's pretty unique; but still well rounded on complexity for the style. Really great balance of fruity/spicy yeast, juniper/berries, and wheat/spelt/oat malts. Never overly sweet or dry either way. Extremely flavorful for the ABV. 4.1

I'll save you one! And I hear you. Once you get to The Dalles, it's not too much of an experience. There's something to say about The Snake River on the way to Idaho though. It has it's charm (fittingly).

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

What an "interesting" opening to this thread today. I almost spit out my iced tea reading @lordofthewiens opening. All I will say about the topic is I can turn a "sure thing" with a beautiful woman into a complete failure.

    I have the worst luck.

Oh, well, on to the new beer.

When I got home from work I really was having a tough time deciding on what to have. Finally, this popped out at me.
Amber Smashed Face from 3 Floyds Brewing.

It is quite hoppy. That is the main attraction to this beer. It is hop forward, sweet middle, and sticky hop on the backside. So sticky that it coats your throat all the way down to your stomach with hoppy goodness. Quite a tasty beer.

This beer pours a nice lighter shade of amber. Not too clear. 1 finger off white, frothy head. Head retention is quite good. The carbonation bubbles in the head are small. Some lacing on the glass.
The nose is quite hoppy. Nice citrus from the hops. Grapefruit seems to stick out with me. There's also a slight hint of sweetness.
Taste - Hops are up front, then it mellows out into a sweet flavor. The hops kick back in hard on the backside, and it is a nice sticky hop flavor.
Feel is quite full bodied. It also has a sticky hop feel, that goes all the way down and lingers.
Tasty, full bodied, hoppy, delicious. A great beer from 3F.

I might have another beer after this. First some dinner, then I will decide.

Cigar City Bourbon Barrel Aged Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout

750ml bottle, 2017 release. Bottling date of 08/16/18 etched on the neck of the bottle. Bourbon and oak dominate the nose with more moderate notes of cinnamon and peppers. The smell definitely gets better as it warms with the bourbon barrel notes dominating and also the cinnamon, chile peppers, and cacao nibs that make the regular Hunahpu’s so amazing are hiding behind the barrel notes. The taste is all the great flavors of Hunahpu’s with a slightly spicy and warming finish.

Pours the blackest of blacks impenetrable to all light and sits that way in the glass. Murky and motor oil thick with a thin wisp of tan khaki head. Aroma is chocolate and strong chili peppers. Taste is chocolate with a good chili kick. Very rich chocolatey when it warms. Mouthfeel is very thick, creamy, and slick with a little lingering heat from the chilis. Awesome beer

Happy New Bud Light Lime Beer-A-Rita Sunday (Week 680) CANtinued!

"I am now off to see "Death Wish (2018), but the Ritas & I will return with more CANsense, including my doctoral thesis; my Oscar non-Blues pic picks & other ... stuff after this break. Stay lit, er, tuned!"

Wow! The modern version was filled with veteran actors & Bruce Willis managed to tone
down his William Shatner School of Overacting nonsense. No doubt that Elisabeth Shue has been working out, but she is still Willy Pete hot! Vincent D'Onofrio is brilliant as the brother, plus the "Breaking Bad" brother-in-law returns as does the "Blue Bloods" grandfather. No (necessary) A-listers, but a capable ensemble cast.

Got some tasty fresh cans in a recent IP trade. I never make it to the Foam can releases myself. Hopefully that will change once the weather improves.
This is Youth Lagoon from Foam in good ole Burlington, VT.
I always enjoy what Foam brews and canning has been a welcome change.

Pours a hazy orange straw. Whispy tan collar and a few tiny bubbled islands floating around.

Aroma is bright citrus, some ripe fruit and grassy hops.

Flavor is unique. Bit of grain, bitter citrus zest and juice. Some earthy grass and herbal hops. Not big juice tropical flavor like some similar looking New England IPAs.

Soft moderate carbonation and medium body, dry and crisp.

A tasty and interesting brew. Nice mix of flavors with good balance. Not a one trick pony.

I love this whole series. I believe Idaho 7 is being released tomorrow. A few of those cans might sneak into a box soon. When the whole shit-ton convo was going on I kept thinking about these beers.

Okay, now you're just being cruel - first Furious, now Todd. I get that I moved away from Minnesota, but how the fliggity flock did Surly distro skip Indiana and hop all the way to Georgia???!!!???

I WAS NOT CONSULTED ABOUT THIS!!!!!

PS: I'm glad you got to try those. When they're fresh, Furious and Todd are traveshamockery good, IMHO.

You're on! As long as I can stay where it's green! I've been to The Dalles - That's where we headed south to (eventually) Crater Lake, via Government Camp. We've never been to I da hoe, so the snake River valley may be right up my alley and it'd cross another state off my remaining "To Be Visited" list.

This was an excellent post.

To be fair - and I doubt this will make you feel any better - I bought these in Florida (I'm off exit 1 in GA, so I'm not doing much beer shopping in these parts). So they may not get much distro in GA, but on the other hand, they made it even farther.

These were both very good, in particular Todd. I'm glad I've got more left. I felt Surly had been teasing me over the past few months with cases of hoppy goodness at Total Wine, but absolutely nothing remotely fresh. Finally, my patience was rewarded.

    Cheers, Mr. O!

Today's last (?) new brew is Sam Calagione's latest inventive excursion: Wood-Aged Bitches Brew, a blend of 3/4 imperial stout and 1/4 Ethiopian Tej honey beer (whatever the hell that is) aged on palo santo wood.

It's ... good. I'm not going wild over it. I would not peg it as a stout on the nose alone, which is redolent with dark fruit flavors of figs and raisins. On the palate, it's complex, deep, and generally pleasant, although a slight metallic tinge detracts from my enjoyment. Once it really gets going, the strong roasted malt and the wood aging really add depth.

A slight fizz to the mouthfeel is another down-check, but otherwise it's a medium-full bodied stout with a touch of alcohol heat.

Where does this fall out? I don't quite know that it's outstanding in any one area, really, but it is enjoyable and complex. Review below:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/64/304821/?ba=Roguer#review
    3.75 / -7.2%

Hmm. I feel this brew is closer to the 4.0 standard than it is to the Petrus Aged Red Ale I had earlier, yet the score is somewhat underwhelming. I think each aspect is fairly judged, though: it's not really world-class in any one facet, although each aspect is pretty solid overall.

Ah well. I've got 5 more on hand if revisiting this with a fresher palate suggests that I missed the mark tonight.

    Cheers, NBSers!
