Not sure this deserves its own thread but Surly made the official announcement that a pizza joint will replace the Brewers' Table space and will open March 30th.

I'm only moderately upset about this post, mostly because it's making me crave pizza.

It would be nice if Surly had more indoor seating during the colder months for people who just want to sit and drink beer and not wait an hour for a table with food service.

All this pizza talk made me order one to eat while I was at Lupulin for Big Beer Week.

It’s pretty messed up we didn’t get an additional update. I’ll be up all night wondering if you went through with it.

I will be there for the 4th night in a row. Got to get that sweet t-shirt... well and drink that yummy big beer.

To keep on the topic of pizza, we probably won't have pizza again tonight.

This will be interesting to see where this takes them. I personally enjoy woodfire pizza.

Surly Pizza opens tomorrow, so /u/Epstar you are in luck if you still haven't had your pizza.

I noticed at the bottom of the published menu a note that reads "A 7% service fee is added to every check. This is not a gratuity, we don't accept tips. A portion of the service fee is used to pay our servers higher wages."

Pretty interesting concept in the landscape of different dining structures these days. I don't really have any issue with it and I guess it would save me money since I would always tip 2 or 3 times that 7% figure, though it would be nice to know what "a portion" means. For the record I don't see such a note on the beer hall menu, so I wonder if this is something they are just experimenting with in the upstairs space and may eventually transfer to the whole taproom?

They don’t accept tips and instead charge 7%? Maybe I’m missing something and it’s set up more like punch pizza, in which case this might be a good deal for the staff. Otherwise, 7% is terrible.

I'm sure it's factored into the price of the pizza as well.

Haven't had my pizza yet. Sad, I know. It's been almost a month. Will update as promised when I get my pizza.

If they are going to add 7% to every check why not just raise the items on the menu 7% across the board and not mention it.... imo they are just looking for a pat on the back by advertising this.... I mean I am glad they are paying people a decent wage but why do you need to put a sign up.... these employees would probably be better off receiving tips anyways. I don’t know anyone that stiffs people on tips unless the service was terrible in witch case I have no problem with that. 15-20% is a lot more than part of 7% last I checked and most of that I would guess isn’t reported so tax free on top of that..... just me 2 cents

It looks like Surly Pizza Upstairs is counter service, and most people don't tip for counter service for food (since, you know, there's not actually a waiter to tip). I agree that it may be a gimmick and easily could be baked into the price and wage structures, except that there may be some tax implications that render it a practical move (I'm not certain; edit: I did some very brief research, and I don't think it would result in tax savings). I suspect that the policy is related to the rapidly rising minimum wage in Minneapolis (currently at $10, soon to be $11.25, and by mid-2022 $15 for a company of Surly's size), which will have a major impact on the service industry (and beyond) and may undermine local tipping customs, much to the chagrin of many local servers.
