Cascade, CTZ, and Chinook are poking their asparagus-like shoots up...apologies to Nor'easter sufferers :grimacing:

Mine aren't up yet here in Phoenix. Anything I need to do to get second year plants to start growing? Water, fertilizer, additional soil? I haven't touched them since they scorched to the ground last June. I'm hoping they aren't dead.

Move them North (or to a higher latitude in the Southern Hemisphere)

They died and wilted by June? Probably dead but they are a hardy plant. Good ol' H2o and some nitrogen might revive them. Hard freeze and snow here in the Sierra Nevada foothills haven't stopped mine. I'd order some rhizomes while their still in stock to have another shot at it. Also being in the SouthWest see if you can find any Neomexicanus rhizomes, might grow better in your climate.

Yeah, we had a week or so where it was 115°+ every day AND I went out of town so couldn't water. Usually that kind of heat holds off until July. I have three plants, all Neomexicanus. I'll try to start watering them and add a bit of fertilizer this week and see what happens.

Hopefully that’ll work. Try a little B-1 as well, might help.

Compost top layer, lots of water, maybe some root stimulator may bring those plants back. Knowing how much water my plants need, I'm not sure if I would plant in Arizona.

A wiser man may not have planted, but I wanted to see how Neomexicanus would do here with their supposed shorter day-length requirements and drought and heat tolerance. I know they aren't really adapted to Phoenix, but I thought maybe they'd at least survive in partial shade.

I have encountered neomexicanus in it's native habitat locally, and while the environment is indeed arid, I wouldn't say heat tolerance would come into play. But it's a cheap experiment that may net at least some fun and at most some hops. Good luck!

How’d ya come about those rhizomes? I grow Cascade and Chinook, wouldn’t mind having some Neomexicanus around.

definatly use the compost and mix in lots of organic matter a foot or more deep if you can. it will help hold the water.

Great Lakes Hops has a few different varieties of neomexicanus available. I will be starting a hop garden this year, and plan on buying some field grade plants from them.
