One of the best beers I've ever had.

I agree, it has been 4 years since was in Regensburg and probably the same since i had a bottle. I had forgotten just how good it is.

I have to try the Schlenkerla Helles again.I didn't pick up much smoke previously, but i regularly drink Islay Scotch, so low amounts of smoke often escape me.

I recall some recent samples (all draft I think) being far more smoky than recent memory. I recall it always being a subtle smokiness, which added some nice depth and complexity to what otherwise is an excellent Helles.

I actually prefer less smoke in this beer because if it's too smoky it gets in the way of the malt character to my palate.

Exactly what I thought about this last particular sampling, it was mostly smoke with a little hops. I like the Märzen and Ürbock because the malt holds up to, and balances, the smokiness.

I haven't had the Weizen in a long while. I seem to recall not liking it at all for the same reasons of the smoke overpowering the rest of the beer.

I love that beer. Bayerischer Anstich it's out of this world. But I wouldn't say no to the bottled version either.

In some back-and-forth on BeerMail with @grantcty we discovered some new news feeds from Hofbräu -- but, just what are they up to?
They're promoting their Maibock for Starkbierzeit? What happened to their Delicator Doppelbock?

For what this is worth, I found some Hacker-Pschorr Okto (Amber Märzen) on sale a couple weeks back and it's still drinking great. Best by July 2018 and $11 a 12 pack -- needed some malt love.

As mentioned in another thread, I found some new-brew HB Maibock -- actually brewed in 2018, not 2017 as some distros are passing off around my area.

It's often been discussed in the Germany Forums that HB Maibock is unlike most others; import or craft-brewed. It's a deep gold, amber-to-orange color with a spicy character from hops and alcohol (7.2% -- nearing the high end of usual for the style).

The malt character is slightly sweet, like most Maibocks, but there's also a touch of caramel where other Maibocks are more bready. There's also a light fruity character in the finish -- from hops or malts? Maybe both?

The body of the HB is also rather syrupy and seems somewhat unattenuated and near to cloying, but it still manages to finish dry -- probably thanks to the attenuation that has happened. The beer is very luscious and chewy.

HB reports that this is one of their beers that's still decoction mashed and the richness of malt proves that, but I see they also mention using hops like Magnum and Herkules, which may explain the palate-stunting I'm getting -- some high alpha hops just don't agree with me. Although, it appears Herkules is the house hop for HB, used in just about all of their beers. I'll have to keep that in mind when I try my next Original/Helles.

    From HB's own info:
Taste: baroque, slightly oily*, malty aroma in the bouquet, very full-bodied, malty-aromatic and with a velvety soft and hoppy finish.

Bittering Units: 31 EBC (European Bittering Units?)

    Malts: Munich, light barley malt.

Hop Varieties: Magnum, Herkules, Perle, Select.

    *Interesting description.

Looks like Hacker-Pschorr uses Herkules in many of their beers too, guess I need to get to know that hop better.

I've been really enjoying Neumarkter Lammsbräu lately. The Dunkles and Edel-Pils have a very nice, rustic charm und are very flavourfull. Very enjoayabl, and easily aviable.

Herkules is a super Alpha Acid hop at 14 - 18% AA. It's used today by many German brewers because it's basically brings a lot of bang for the buck. It's super high bitterness means you need far less of it to get the same bittering quality that a normal Noble hop would give you. I've used it before in my own brews. Basically, it's a way to lower costs. Super bitter but not much on flavor in my opinion.

Seems like many brewers are still learning to dial it into their traditional recipes -- I've tasted too many German and German-style beers that are overly bitter.

Or else they're falling into Americanization.

HB Maibock arrived in my market recently, and I picked a 6-pack today and enjoyed a couple bottles this evening with dinner. This description is spot on, and all I would add is that is has the balance and finesse that I get in excellent German beers, regardless of style or strength. I think another 6-pack for Easter Sunday lunch with the extended family is in order.

We get this in the States too. When I first bought it in bottles it was fantastic. But between how old imports are these days, the fact that they don't bottle date (I think), and the bottles are green...I haven't purchased them in a long time. I've only purchased the Pils though, if I recall correctly.

Their Pils is occasionally on draft at one of my local pubs, and it tastes heavenly on tap.

I also buy this beer on tap (when I see it) and I also very much enjoy drinking it. I maybe see it once a year?

    Cheers!

Yup, that sounds about right. We’ll have to keep this thread updated when either of us sees it, maybe it’s one huge drop to the US?
