Dry London ESB has been my favorite lately for most stouts...great mouth feel and estery counter to the roasted malts (fwiw, I've used US-05, S-04, Windsor, M-03, and 1028)

Whitbread owned more than a dozen UK breweries at one point. I'm pretty sure that most of them had their own yeast strain.

    Ron,

Are Wyeast 1098, WLP007 and Fermentis S-04 the exact same Whitbread yeast strain?

Is Wyeast 1099 a different from the above Whitbread yeast strain?

    Cheers!

Some interesting information here on the Whitbread yeast strains. There's a lot of back and forth in the comments, but in the main post there is this:

If CFG is Fermentis S-04 (and not S-40 as stated in the Table S1), then it interestingly doesn’t seem to cluster with the other Whitbread yeasts, but rather seems to be close to WLP006 Bedford and WLP013 London.

I won't pretend to be able to follow the science here, but I look forward to learning more about how yeast strains are related in the coming years.
